THE HISTORY OF ALLEGHENY VOCATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
.rn , A 1
I' 1. ' V SW' Y '
The history of the Allegheny Vocational
High School is interesting and worth pre-
serving. The school originally was The
Allegheny Preparatory School, c private in-
stitution maintaincd by the residents of
that part of the city in which we are
located, qt that time, a section of homes
of wealthy citizens.
It is one of the oldest schools on
the North Side.
After the World War the building was
taken over as e Rehabilitation Sehnol for
disabled soldiers and continued as such
for several years. In the fall of the year
1925 volunteers were sought among the boys
at the Ralston Industrial Schoolg which
was then the only school of its kind under
the direction of the Pittsburgh Board of
Education. In the early spring of l924,
fifty boys of the Franklin School were sent
to form c nucleus for e future student body.
Thc'buildin5 was remodeled and the Allegheny
Vocational School was in full swing,
In the your 1940 there were eight
hundred boys in Allegheny Vocational and more
boys enrolling.
In 1930 Hr, Case-was made Principal
nr. ncciii was was counselor in 1951, and
the school name was changed to The Allegheny
Vocational High School.
Q
,
Greetings to the members of the Class of 1940:
You have been getting ready to enter the
industrial field as machinists, auto mechanics,
electrical workers, sheet metal workers, cabinet
makers, and carpenters. Having taken advantage of
the training offered you, you are now ready for the
big chance. v
My hope is that when that chance occurs, and
I hope soon for everyone, each one of you will bend
every effort to m ke good.
And remember there are still more opportunities
for you to continue your training. It is up to you
to further your education and get the best possible '
job in industry, and you can emulate Lincoln's mottog
UI will read and study, for some day my chance will
come.N D
My best wishes to each and everyone of you,
for a-long, happy, successful life.

Although wo'll find'some sadness
Where ever wo may go,
Lotfs fill our hearts with'gladness,
And strive to keep than so.
If at tho early dawning,
Wo do not fool just rightg
Lst's nrt start out by frowning
And keep it up 'till night.
But rather, drive away the frown,
And chase tire 01,311.63 ziway,
Thus will wo bring the sunshine down,
And keep it hero all day,
When people soem.to be weary,
and fool all dow: and outg '
Just Koay :ight on being cheery,
Don't lot tnom.ruko you pout.
This world is full of sadnessg
We seo it every Gay.
Our duty is to bring gladness,
And chase that gloom away.
So, smile when skies are cloudy,
As you smile when they are blusg
For the joy you spread around you
Will all como back to you.

THE YEARS OF NOW AND THEN
This morning Vukela comes into the classroom
and says, nHere is the 30.20 I owe you.n The debt is
crossed out, we think that next month or next year
Vukela will pay his debts.
Sobieralski is urged to accept a challenge
of a combat with a couple of classmates, and he gets
mussed up and gets his glasses smashed. Question:
Who was financially responsible? But he was a gpod
sport and took his misfortune philosophically.
Baton had the hard hand of fate fall upon him
when Emsworth stopped collecting their garbage and
paying his 315.00 per month tuition. He shouldered
the 315.00 per month bill himself until the borough
started to pay it again. He wasn't willing to give
up without a fight. .
Kalaba is a very unselfish boy. He used to
share his girl with Baron and Edenhartj but Edenhart
got a job, thus ending the competition.
Ceranic and Grimes became had friends for a
short time last year after they had played on opposing
football teams in Elliott one week-end. This was
soon mended, however.
Bollen has much difficulty in getting his
brother to school on time. It is to be hoped that
this doesn't occur out on a job.
Danner is a steady fellow who has many difficulties
to overcome, but he is cheerful and optimistic which
helps him. He is also on the tennis team.
Gulas likes the night life, but possibly this
may in the future fit him for a nightwatchman's job.
Hughes graduated early because of his activities -
and knowledge in certain lines.
Jordan takes time off of'patrol and radio scripts
to give the boys moral guidance. Some day soon Turkegee
Institute, Bennett, or Johnson C. Smith Universities
will receive a good student.
U Eisenreich is a trusted car driver for Mr. Golitz,
Mr. Martin, and Nancy.
Keller helps to run the service end of the ADEQ
Shop and no doubt will soon be successfully operating
his brother's service station in Greenville, Mississippi.
-2 .a
Kinz gets excused occasionally to operate his
mother's store on Madison Ave. That ought to be a good
place to get some free groceries, may bel
Kirin left us this year to show the Pinkerton
Chevrolet how an auto shop should be run.
McGuffey is the one who has the long distance record.
He leaves home at 6:10 in the morning for school. He comes
from seven miles beyond Greensburg by bus or car, followed
by a train ride to the Union Station and walks from there
to school. Besides he is on the tennis team, the No. 1
man. His perseverance will be the source of success
somewhere. You can hardly lick a fellow who has been
able to take it like that. ,
- Rudisin is a carpenter who likes to spend money
on tools. If one's heart is where ene's treasure is,
then Rudy should become a good Workman. Klonowski
will probably get rich along with Sucansky making
shells for the next war. Klonowski is also a good
choir boy. Sucansky learned this winter how much
freezing a model A Ford would not stand.
Kolarik will soon own an auto repair shop
probably with a sign above such as WKolarik, Kelarik,
Kelarik, Kolarik, and Kolarik.iuto Shop, where the
auto shop tools, nm tm e11i,s,e,L"will Ksound
from morn until night.
Ansbach is learning to be a great paper hanger
as well as refrigerator expert and tennis player. He
is the school artist, too, and likes to sketch beautiful
girls. He seems to have conflicts in his mind as to
what clothes to put on them.at times. He gives up
sometimes and'doesn't do much of anything about this
matter at all.
Stahl is the politician. His father is an
alderman over on Federal Street and Charles no doubt
will some day run for Congress after learning the
ropes on North Side.
Then the Bauman's who went to the Westinghouse-
Nuttall Co., Brown, who went to the Arizona CCC Camp,
Carpenter who joined the army in Virginia, Geisler who
is learning how to be a brewmaster for Duquesne Brewery,
Goydich who went to Fisher Scientific Materials Co.,
Hancock who quit, and Platek who aspired to a restaurant
position should not be overlooked.
All in all the class locks very good with more of
them already in positions or promised'positions than any
ever graduated from our school before,
I have found it'a pleasure to work with these boys
over a period of years. I have high hopes for their success
in life expeeially if they remember to be dependable workers
and citizens.
