I PRESIDENT AT DESK I PRESIDENTS MESSAGE THESE are exciting days in which to live. There are powerful forces in ferment, strange new doctrines in public print, swift and epoch-making changes in every phase of life. Something of that excitement has found its way even into cloistered college halls and the college world is no longer the same. It is no accident that raccoon coats and collegiate cars are no longer to be seen. They belong to an age of frivolity, of indolence, of irresponsibility. They have no place in a school soberecl by Contact with life. But while the excitement of present events shakes us out of the smug other-worldliness of academic life, there is a need for calmer thinkin than the outside world can ive. The demands of the present should not divert us from all thought of the Future. Changing values shoufcl not lead us to forget the values which are not subject to change. We are all weary of challenges and tired of hearing that youth is the hope of the world, but we cannot escape the fact that the future does belong to the youn er generation and that the sooner they become aware of it and seriously apply themselves to what will Tae their problems, the better it will be both for them and for the world. There is much talk these days of shorter working hours and increased leisure, ofthe time that is coming when work will be unnecessary and the sluggard will find his paradise. Let us not be deluded by this.-Al em loyment is not going to disappear, all work is not et old-fashioned. The old emphasis on initiative, amllinitlon, and responsibilit is not out-of-date. These wil,l continue to be needed in the new world. The best work will always be done tsiy men who put in the longest hours, who ive themselves completelgf to their appointed task, who take an honest pride in work well done. The worli's work is not yet finishe : there is still a place for trained intelligence, courageous faith and persistent toil. 0120
