The KALDRCDN OF 1933 I ALLEGI-IENY COLLEG E MEADVILLE . PENNSYLVANIA ,U-Q5 I r V w 0 BENTLEY HALL 0 Old Allegheny! For over a centur historic Bentley Hall has symbolized the deepest intellectual questing, the hi hest ideals in education. Hallowed by the tread of generations, the old stone step now honorably retirecfas a bench by the entry bears witness to the swelling stream of eager scholars who created our Alleghe, who spun the fabric of present custom. And now weaving into the tapestriecl richness of tradition the scarlet and gold of modernity, a courageous young administration quiclcens into life the ancient patterns. Bentley becomes for us the symbol of strong renascence. The new Allegheny! 020 The KALDRCDN OFIQ33 . .ALLEGHHENY LIJE MEADVILLE PENNSYLVANIA if 1,14-,I 3 .......... EPS? 'FW 'ni L .pliblk 1-f.s..fw.. Has Mother Nature been a-tippling, that she'-thus prodigally strews leaf and bloom? r perhaps, to fashion a Paradise after his own taste, Bacchus on some warm spring night carouses here, decking the shrubs with their heavy blossoms, heapin the petals for a fragrant bed. Beyond the flower arden nearly drowned in the background's verdant good, peeps forth the Rustic Bridge-where, 'tis saii the mystic swastika is sought o' nights as guarantee for sweet whispered wishes. An old-world serenity clothes the Ford Memorial, of itself imparting a sense of Allegheny's tradition of Christian reverence. As Reis Library dominates the college's scholastic life, so the Chapel is her esthetic and spiritual haven-where one whose heart is over-full may cry Sanctuaryl The chimes at twilight ring out ancient hymns, and many, wearied at the close of long days, find new inspiration in this message of peace and loving kindness. 060 an xixi' o ACROSS THE RAVINE TO BENTLEY o A priceless Colonial gem in the natural setting which has displayed it exquisitely for over one hundred years. As an example of the early American architectural style, Bentley ranks second in Pennsylvania only to Philadelphia's Independence Hall. Of the administration building, Allegheny's historian, E. A. Enterprising athletes may find equip- ment here for all manner of indoor sports--from box-fighting to ping-pon and probably jig-saw puzzles. Behind the gym the outdoor minded may cavort on gridiron, track, and ciamond. If we don't allav your curiosity, you'll probably go blind trying to read the sign on the drainpipep so we'll tell you that itiis only an advertisement of a not-too-successful football season. There are powerful forces in ferment, strange new doctrines in public print, swift and epoch-making changes in every phase of life. Something of that excitement has found its way even into cloistered college halls and the college world is no longer the same. It is no accident that raccoon coats and collegiate cars are no longer to be seen. They belong to an age of frivolity, of indolence, of irresponsibility. They have no place in a school soberecl by Contact with life. But while the excitement of present events shakes us out of the smug other-worldliness of academic life, there is a need for calmer thinkin than the outside world can ive. The demands of the present should not divert us from all thought of the Future. Changing values shoufcl not lead us to forget the values which are not subject to change. We are all weary of challenges and tired of hearing that youth is the hope of the world, but we cannot escape the fact that the future does belong to the youn er generation and that the sooner they become aware of it and seriously apply themselves to what will Tae their problems, the better it will be both for them and for the world. There is much talk these days of shorter working hours and increased leisure, ofthe time that is coming when work will be unnecessary and the sluggard will find his paradise. Let us not be deluded by this.-Al em loyment is not going to disappear, all work is not et old-fashioned. The old emphasis on initiative, amllinitlon, and responsibilit is not out-of-date. These wil,l continue to be needed in the new world. The best work will always be done tsiy men who put in the longest hours, who ive themselves completelgf to their appointed task, who take an honest pride in work well done. The worli's work is not yet finishe : there is still a place for trained intelligence, courageous faith and persistent toil. 0120 O FACULTY GROUP 0 FACULTY ALLEGHENY COLLEGE Wllllam Pearson Tolley B D Ph D D D Preslclenf Wxlllam Arthur Elhot A M L H D Professor of Greek Clarence Fusbee Ross A Nl Lxtt D LL D Vxce Pres1denf and RCglSfF8F Charles I Lxng A M Ph D Professor of PhyS1LS and Astronomy Oscar P Akers A M Ph D Professor of Mathematlcs and Surveymg Rxcharcl E Lee M S A M SC D Professor of Chemxstry Chester A Darlmg A M Ph D Professor of B1ology and Geology Fredemck G Henke A M Ph D Professor of Phllosophy and Educaflon Iohn R Schultz A M Ph D Professor of Engllsh Llferafure Henry W Church A M Ph D Professor of Romance Languages and Llferatures Lee D McClean A M Professor of Economlcs and Socxology Irwm R Bexler ST B Ph D Professor of EHgllSh B1ble and Phxlosophy of REllgl0I1 Stanley S Swarfley S T B A M Ph D Professor of Engllsh Language 0130 FACULTY ALLEGHENY COLLEGE Warner F. Garbark C0-171 anagenr Howard Lauffenberger Carl Borg I is Arthur Daniela' I Waldo S. Tippin HE Allegheny football team attempting to close an unsuccessful season with a victory over Bethany found the opposition from the West Virginia team a little too strong and the game ended with neither side being able to score. Thus the record stands at one win, one tie, and five losses. The disappointment felt regarding the football season was not due to the unusually large number of losses g these were predicted by those who knew and who' thought they knew what to expect. However, some sorrow was felt by many who followed the team through the entire season because of the closeness of the margin of defeat on at least three occasions. There are many who expressed the opinion that the members of the team were not performing at their best because of the discontinuance of athletic subsidies. This charge was not only unfair to the team members and to the coach, but it was absolutely unfounded. It stands to reason that Howard Laufcnbergcr a group of men brought to any school solely be- cause of their ability to play football will put on a better exhibition than a group of boys selected from the bona fide stu- dents of the college. So, when the absence of bril- liant play was noticed, it was not taken into con- sideration that unsea- soned players were in ac- tion, and the above un- fair suggestion was made. It is true that a num- ber of regulars from last year's team were on hand for the season just closed, 07.10 T ' Z 2235523 Carl Borg FOOTBALL VARSITY FOOTBALL SQUAD 1.rl Row: Widmnnn,,Ferraccio, Kaiser, Glass. At the close of the season, the first string backtield did not contain a single individual with any College football experience previous to the season just passed. The importance of the above statement will readily be seen when it is disclosed that during the entire season the team was within eight yards of the opponents' goal line exactly 21 times and yet scored only three touchdowns. It is sincerely hoped that the above statements will not be considered as alibis. The team record stands at one win, one tie and five losses, and no amount of explanation can change it. However, it is felt that the readers will be interested in a little more than cold figures, and this resume is an attempt to supply this extra bit. Following is a brief account of the games played. EDINBORO FORWARD passing attack in the dying moments of the game gave the teachers their 7 to 0 victory over the Alligators. In the first quarter, it looked like an easy Alligator victory by at least three touchdowns. The team marched down the field without any difficulty but on the goal line, Allegheny surrendered the ball on downs. Edinboro gained 8 yards by rushing while Allegheny piled up 145. SPRINGFIELD GAINST Springfield, a team that was rated as one of the strong college teams in the East, Allegheny played one of its best games of the season. During the entire first half, the Maroon eleven, which fought Brown to a 13-6 battle on the previous Saturday, was held to a lone six points. In the second half, with Captain Waite, a tower of defensive strength on the forward wall, on the side lines with an injury, the Springfield team scored three more touchdowns. The game ended with the score 25 to 0 against Allegheny. DICKINSON HE game with Dickinson on Home Coming Day was the most disappointing of the entire season. Dickinson won the game I5-0, on two queer plays despite the fact that Allegheny gained more ground rushing and twice as many first downs. The first score came when Allegheny in a scoring position attempted a field goal. The kick was blocked and a Dickinson tackle recovered it and raced 91 yards for a score. Their second score came when the Allegheny safety man let a punt roll over the goal line unmolested. After a Dickinson player fell on it, the referee ruled that the Allegheny safety man had touched the hall and thus, the score resulted. 0720 FOOTBALL ITHACA T Ithaca, it was the same story. Al- legheny gained twice as much ground rushingg had 15 first downs to 7 for Ithaca, made six at- tempts at the opposing goal line and still the game was lost 12 to O. This game was a keen dis- appointment in as much as supporters- of the Al- legheny team figured on a victory. Raw' Brown flrl Balmer OBERLIN BERLIN presenting a well drilled and sturdy team was the next opponent to be faced. This game was one ofthe most difficult on the schedule and Allegheny played a very much improved brand of football, scored one touchdown while the Ohioans likewise scored a touchdown and then added the extra point which gave them the margin of victory. A good many peo- ple who followed the Allegheny team closely, expressed considerable surprise at the continued fine morale of the team that won only one game. With due credit going to the coach, a big factor in the maintaining of the fine morale, was the knowledge that the team was outplayed only once during the entire season and that was by the high rankingSpringfieldteam. Coach THE BASKETBALL SEASON LLEGHENY suffered a most disastrous floor season during which they won but two games while they lost ten. These results were rather expected when one comes to consider that the men who made up this year's 'Gator squad were new as a whole to intercollegiate competition However, the only man that was used on the first team who will be lost to that combination next Waldo S. Tzlopin year is Captain Mas- sing. For that reason, we feel certain that with the seasoning they ob- tained this year, they will be able to produce somewhat different re- sults next year. The season started off well enough with a win against Youngstown City College, but from that time on, it was just a case of a fighting, in- experienced 'Gator five bucking against the more experienced groups which this district and vicinity provided. 0750 Harry fl1a.r.rz'ng BASKETBALL Account of Sermon Canfd. On Ianuary 12, the Blue and Gold visited Buffalo and were de- feated by the very close. score of 29-28 by acom- paratively green Bison outfit. In quick succes- sion at Mount Union and Thiel, the Alligators suffered successive de- feats at the hands of their more experienced opponents. Their second appearance at home came when they stack- ......., . - , ...:, 'r' .1-3 ,., , p. ..,,.' . ed up against the highly A ' ' touted Titans from T' T Westminster. The slowly expiring 'Gators gave everyone a thrill when they rallied in the second half of this game to outscore and outplay their more versatile opponents. Beginning with this game, Captain Massing and his crew showed at times what a fighting five could really accomplish. But, these spurts were usually short lived when the more experienced teams of the district became adjusted to the superior competition. Then four more defeats were added when the Blue and Gold was forced to bow to Waynes- burg, Fenn, Westminster and Thiel respectively. i 4.21- at V 7' . .Q Jr., sh' F' w- 1 X, Ram Brown-Guard Willard Berger-Guard In the Alfred game, the 'Gators won their second and most decisive victory. The Alfred team having beaten a faster Cornell five, came here with the idea of adding another victory to their total. However, the Blue and Gold team was really on and they took their foemen to the tune of a 55 to 51 defeat. Then on February 24, the Covenanters from Geneva visited Allegheny and ad- ministered a severe defeat to the rising hopes of the 'Gators. The final game of the season was Joe Serene-Forward played at West Virginia University where the Tippineers lost a rather slow moving, listless game. The entire varsity, which was composed of Captain Massing and Willard Berger at guards, Hibbs at center, and Serene and Mc- Nutt at the forward posts, should be avail- able for duty next year with the exception of Captain Massing. The Phi Gams won the meet with a total of 29 points, the Phi Psis being a close second with 26. Sigma Alpha Epsilon garnered 10 points to nose out Phi Delta Theta for third place. A new intramural record was made in the 40-yard breaststroke, as DuMars succeeded in defeating Klicka in the time of 27.8 seconds.
