Mrs. Anno B. Higgins, vice principal, has, through her many
years of service, become a vital part of the Allegany scene. '
lf we happen to go astray, she tries to steer us back on the
right course with friendly guidance. Her talent also extends
to classroom instruction, where she teaches English.
The secretarial force is made up
of Shirley Warnick and Patricia
Phillips. Mimeographing, correspon-
dence, new pupils, football tickets,
records and schedules are done by
these efficient secretaries.
Thirty-four years of devoted service to Allegany High School
have been rendered faithfully by our assistant principal, Foy
A. Curry. Kind advice and answers to the many problems of
Alco students are given willingly as he fills the positions of
school treasurer, cafeteria director, and mathematics instructor.
His keen sense of humor and remarkable cooperative spirit
are most outstanding.
His vital interest in athletics rounds out the character of
this much admired member of our faculty.

Another extra-curricular activity this month is one
of the many GAA Co-ed Sports Nights. Aside from
all extra fun !et's take a look on the serious side

Allegany High School! Rah! Rah! Rah! The biggest game
of the season is coming. To start off the pre-game cere-
monies, our annual pep rally is held where Sandro Hatfield
is crowned by Coach Payne as Miss Camper Queen. Adding
to the color of the holiday spectacle were all the things sold
which, as you can see, included mums, shakers, programs,
and Allegany Camper pennants along with a special edition
of the Alcohi Mirror. The big day arrives and the queen
and her court are driven proudly around the stadium. At
half time Alco's own senior band performs and an added
attraction to the Cheerleaders this year is Sissie Schoenadel,
the mascot.

O come, all ye faithful! The yuletide season has
come and depicting to us the real significance of
Christmas is the Allegany Senior Choir as they sing for
us their praises to God. Also showing the true mean-
ing is the Hi-Y as they collect food for the White
Christmas. Turning to the gaiety of the season the
choir displays a scene of a home where singing and
dancing are taking place. Speaking of dancing. Did
you know that we have a dance team right here in
our senior class? Ann Decker and Rick Love made
their debut at the Senior Mix as the jitterbugs of the
evening.

Dimesl Dimesl Dimes! Starting off the March of Dimes
Drive we have the after school dance with music furnished
by Alco's Dance Band, At the assembly scenes for each
month of the year were depicted. Fine clothes and teddy
bears and the boys and girls seem to be all ready for the
Easter parade. Basketball game? With the Hi-Y cheer-
leaders and all those basketballs on the floor we don't
know who was more confused, the Hi-Y or the men's
faculty.

Ole' Ole' Congratulations Janice Phillips for being
chosen to reign over this years Spanish Fiesta Among
other activities at the Fiesta we caught Jeanne Eichner
and Mike Shatter rehearsing the cha-cha while other
members of the Spanish Club look on. An event which
happened in March was the annual Maiorette assembly.
As you can see we caught them at rehearsal also. April
always brings the Senior Bond Concert, here we have the
officers of the band discussing the coming event. Ray
Ogden, captain of the band, is seen telling the others
about a novelty number.

Paynemen Win Opener
ALLEGANY 20 - BEALL 6
"Fumble" seemed to be the key word in the Campers'
opening game against the Beall Mountaineers as both
teams did their share of it. Allegany fumbled seven
times and recovered four. Beall miscued six times but
was able to recover only one. Fabri's drop in the first
quarter, pounced upon by Grimes, resulted in Walker
barreling his way over for the first TD. Conley's kick
was good. After Ketterman's recovery of a Fabri fumble
on the first play after kickoff, Conley sprinted nineteen
yards to cross over without being touched. His kick was
off to the right.
BealI's hopes raised in the third quarter when Waites
marched 52 yards for a six-pointer. The Campers blocked
the kick. ln the fourth quarter Johnson recovered a drop
by Groves. Thirteen plays later Lease slipped through
Beall's line to go over standing up, Conley's kick was
good. Allegany chalked up the first win of the season.
Campers Win Second Game
ALLEGANY 14 1 HAGERSTOWN 7
Allegany got back on the winning trail by knocking
off a determined Hagerstown team, l4-7.
The Campers went some 60 yards the first time they
gat the ball, with Doug Walker going over for the TD.
Hagerstown scored in the second quarter. The score
was knotted until the last quarter. Then the Camper
big gun, Buck Conley, went 46 yards in the final minutes
to the l-yard line and quarterback Lease called' upon
Buck to carry the mail for the touchdown.
The gun sounded and the Paynemen won their second
game of the year.
Judges Knock Off Campers
HANDLEY 14 -- ALLEGANY 7
The Campers lost their first game to the Handley
Judges of Winchester, Virginia, by the score of l4-7.
A fumble in the first half proved to be fatal for the
Campers. That fumble developed into a touchdown for
the Judges,
Mike Lease led the Campers with his passing while
Walker, Conley, and Jackson took care of the running
attack.
Handley was probably the biggest team Allegany met
all year.
In the last quarter Alco threatened with minutes to
go, but failed on the l0-yard line.
Buck Conley scored the team's only TD.
Tornadoes Prove To Be Too Much!
ALLEGANY 0 -- KEYSER 6
A grueling fight for both teams is an apt description
of Alco's fourth game of the season. All yardage was
gained in short spurts as each team found the other
line impenetrable. A clipping penalty found Alco on its
own l yard line, but Lease's kick removed the threat.
A succession of short runs, incomplete passes, punts,
and the seemingly inevitable fumbles brought the first
half to a close with a O-O score.
The third quarter began with the same killing pace,
but l3 plays later Spotts found a hole in the left of the
Blue and White line and hit pay dirt. Keyser attempted
a pass play for the extra which failed. Fourth quarter
found Alco threatening but never quite making it. Keyser
left Cumberland with the first victory over Allegany in
l3 years.
Alco Ties Bulldogs
MARTINSBURG 0 - ALLEGANY 0
The Campers played the first scoreless tie since l936.
Allegany came to life in the third quarter when Carl
Brown recovered a Bulldog fumble on the l5 after a
few line plungers. Lease tried to hit Johnson with a pass
but the Beavers intercepted and the Campers were stop-
ped again. Allegany couldn't carry the pigskin past the
lO-yard line.
Campers Prove Good Mudders
ALLEGANY 12 - FREDERICK 0
Bucl. Conley went 55 yards in the first quarter for
a touchdown that meant the difference on the muddy
field in Frederick. Jupiter Pluvius was reigning during
the whole game. Ouarterback Lease called a fine game
with the running of Jackson, Conley and Walker. Fred-
erick's fumble of l.ease's punt set up the 2nd touchdown
as Doug Walker went over from five yards out. lt marked
the 2nd win for the Campers in the newly organized
Cumberland Valley Athletic League.
Irish Shilelagh Campers
ALLEGANY 0 1 LaSALLE 21
"Fumbles" and "Penalties" were the big word in the
minds of Camper rooters following the game with the
Explorers of Centre Street. LaSalle scored twice in the
first half. The Camper offense couldn't start rolling and
passing defense was weak. "Rumples" Rice played an
outstanding game on defense for the Campers.
Alco Bows To Westminster, 14-6
ALLEGANY 6 - WESTMINSTER I4
A rough and tumble fight all the way, but not far
enough, for the Alco Campers was the battle at West-
minster. Tice's fumble on the opening kickoff resulted
in Ronnie Bruce punting from behind the goal. Three
plays later the Owls bolted over to snatch a 7-O lead.
In the second auarter the Campers turned an Owl fumble
to their advantage, Walker crashed over, but Conley's
placement was wide, The half ended, 7 to 6.
lntercepting an Alco pass in the fourth quarter, the
Owls set up their clinching touchdown. l-lead crossed
over for the score then passed to Frock for the point.
Allegany drove the kickoff to the Owl's 44 but lost the
ball on downs and the game ended l4 to 6.
ALLEGANY O -
Allegany kicked off to start the traditional classic at
Greenway Stadium. The first half proved to be a very in-
teresting game from the Alco side of the field as Allegany
outplayed Fort Hill. The first time the Campers got the
ball, Lease piloted the Paynemen some 45 yards before
the Hilltoppers could stop the rushing Campers. With
the gaining of the backs Conley, Walker, and Jackson,
Alco ground out much yardage. The defense of the
Campers was superb with Tice, Brown, Rice, and Rex-
road stopping the Sentinels after time. The spectators
watched the Blue and White leave the field at half time
with a scoreless ball game.
In the third quarter Ronnie Bruce returned the kick-
off to his 34 yard line. Lonnie Jackson then went two
yards, Conley added 2 more and then Doug Walker
F
FORT HILL 20
fumbled on the Camper 35. Fort Hill recovered but
found the Alco line too tough as the Campers took over.
Fullback Jackson failed to hold on to the pigskin and
the Red Raiders recovered again, Powell passed to Welt-
man for 10 yards and then John Kesler broke through
for the first T.D. of the game. After the kickoff Walker
bobbled the leather and it only took the Sentinels 3
plays to go over with Hillegas going some 25 yards
around end for the score. Minutes later a pass from
Powell to Hillegas put the ball on the Camper 4 yard
line and John Kesler went over for his second touchdown
of the day. Seconds later the quarter came to a close
and saw scoring done in the third quarter. The fourth
quarter saw both teams going up and down the field
but not penetrating the goal.
