THE SENIOR CLASS
We the class of 38 began our eventful career as the first freshman class in the completed Allegany high
school Four years have passed all too swiftly and soon there will be only the memories ofjoyful days spent here
As ChIl1LlSllSIlC freshmen we elected Charles Shaw president and Miss eannette Holzshu advisor The
two social events of the ye lr for us were the Cvlrls league dance and the freshman party
We felt more a part of Allegany when we became sophomores because we were eligible for membership
in all the school organizations Lloyd Stallings president and Miss Theresa Nicht advisor guided us ably
through this phase of our high school career
Then upon attalning Junior standlng new problems and responsibilities faced us Raymond Skidmore
was elected president and Mr William Noland advisor of the class In selecting the class ring the vote
was almost unanimous for a ring with an oval stone either blue or rose onyx upon which was mounted the
Maryland coat of arms As hosts to the seniors at the traditional junior senior prom we were perhaps for
the first time made aware that our days at Allegany were numbered
Fifty years have passed since the first class was graduated and we have tried to maintain the high stan
dards of scholarship and achievement set by our predecessors We elected Max Elbln president at our lirst
meeting later Berkeley Mathews as editor in chief of THE ALLEGEWI with Virginia Thayer as assistant
editor Miss Pearl A Eader and Miss Mary Sowerby were elected yearbook advisors Mr Harold C Wickard
dramatic advisor Mr William Noland and Mr Lewyn C Davis social advisors This year two seniors Mary
Larklns and William Fridinger brought the Tasker G Lowndes declamation banners to Allegany As a class
we looked forward eagerly yet reluctantly to our parting activities the class play class night the outing the
prom the senior sermon and graduation
We hope that Allegany has been enriched by our presence even as our lives have been enriched by hours
spent within its walls We shall carry with us memories of friendships good times classes teachers perhaps
a little disappointment and sorrow the somewhat yumbled but ever to be remembered mosaic of Our
Allegany
Us

THE JUNIOR CLASS
Exeerpts 'rom a Junior 5 Dzary
September 9 Returnmv to school after an eventful summer was more fun than
Ihad anticlpated Everyone has grown up mrraculously and we really act like
Juniors
September 29 Our first class meeting' We re off to a grand start Today we
elected james Sullivan presrdent Eugene Munro vlce president Paul Stltcher
secretary and Paul Kemp treasurer Everyone is sure that our officers are going
to make th1s year a success
December 12 Fire over Allegany' Don t get exc1ted We dldn t quite need
the fire company although I thought for awhile we should There was a very
heated discussion over our class rings because If has been decided to standardize
them and we had to decide upon something especially good We finally agreed
upon one of solid gold with a blue splnelle set upon which IS mounted the Duke
of Cumberland s seal On one shank lS a view of the Narrows and on the other
a view of Allegany s front entrance We re very proud of our rings and can hardly
walt to wear them
anuary 31 It seems almost impossible but the first semester ended today
We Juniors are really proud of our record thus far and l hope we can keep up the
good work Not only in the elass room have the Juniors been striving hard but

May 21 Many a juniors heart is all a flutter and rt is not very difficult to
guess why Last night we attended the Junior senior prom and it would take a
heart of steel to wlthstand the spell of soft lights and sweet music Serrously
though the prom was a huge success and served to give us a glimpse of a promlsmg
year as seniors
une 1 Parting IS such sweet sorrow and we are truly sorry to say goodbye
to this year s seniors Today there was the senior assembly Wlth a feeling of pride
yet Wlfh a llttle reluctance we for the first time took our places as seniors ln the
auditorium We resolved today that we would endeavor to make our senlor year
as successful as this year has been So goodbye dear Allegany until next year

THE SOPI-IOMORE CLASS
The 1937 38 school year certalnly dld not prove dls lppolntlng to the sopho
more class Thls year we became permanently estabhshed rs upper elassmen rn
Allegany Some were really astonished at the strides we made toward our goal
to be Junrors
ust as soon as the opportunltles rrose forjoxnlng athletre teams and the more
lmportant school organlzatrons, the sophomore elass showed rts aggressrveness md
lts ablllty We dlsplayed our talents rn football soccer fieldhall and basketball
IH Alpha Delta Kappa, the modern danclng group the speeeh club ind the muslc
clubs
Our pres1dent lmes Gaffney further dlstlngulshed the elrss by rnterceptlng
a pass to Fort Hlll and throwlng the ball for the declslve touchdown rn the Turkey
dry game
Not only dnd some of us lttun athletrc honors but scholastrc and dramatlc
ones as well Many of us held posltlons of hlgh rank on the honor roll through
out the year A group of glfted Thesplans lncludrng Peggy SCCTISI Stanley Lud
delee and Dan Wewod, were dlscovered ln our mrdst and were cast rn supportmg
roles of The Blaelc Flammgo and Babes m Togland
The officers who were elected on October first were ames Gaffney pres1dent
Arthur Lancaster vrce pres1dent, Agatha Roberts treasurer and Helena Aronson
secretary
Of the many memorable events of our sophomore year we remember partlcu
larly the choosrng of a standard class rmg
We belleve that we have successfully malntalned che admirable record estab
llshed by the preceding sophomore classes and that we shall be able to contlnue
the record when we become Junrors

excellent presentatlons
The first play of the past year was a grlppmg mystery play entitled 'The Black

Thrs year the club lnaugurated two new customs The first was the use of the
double cast as ln The Black Flamingo and the second was the practlce of havmg
each 1nd1v1dual apply hls own make up Thrs proved of benefit not only to the

On the whole A D K has had a very successful year and hopes for even

This year s Cd1Il0D of the Allegany hlgh school basketball team whlle If was
not by any means a champlonshlp qulnt played a good brand of basketball and
left behlnd lt an envlable record of good sportsmanshlp and clean hard playlng
Loslng three regulars from last year s champlonshlp team Coach Bowers was
forced to spend the greater part of the season attemptlng to find a w1nn1ng com

the games won and lost standpolnt w1nn1ng eleven and los1ng twelve
lndlvldual honors for the season were falrly evenly dlvlded among the mem
bers of the team James Gaffney was hlgh scorer wlth 137 polnts to hls credlt
while Ray Skldmore had the hlghest percentage of fouls caglng Z5 ID 33 attempts
for a percentage of 64 Lawrence Shaner and jlm Gaffney shared hlgh polnt

Slnce four of these regulars and a number of first strmg substltutes wrll be back
IH the unlform of the Blue and Wh1te next season we can reasonably expect great

As long as school records 1re broken and new ones set ue feel that progress
1s made Two such new marks xy ere put on the books last year ames Gaffney
moved the school javelln mark from 143 ft 3 ID to 159 fr 1 ID durlng the C V
A L meet at W1nc11ester VIYCIDIT That L1lSf'1I'lCL stood '1stheC V A L record
for a br1eff1ve mlnutes and then If vm IS topped by 1V1111er oflvhrtlnsburg vxho
threw the spear 17611 That brought out the yery rare 1nst mee of two men on
the same day breaklng a record 1111111.11 had stood SIUCL 1932 The m11e relay team
composed of Robert Perdew Lau rence bhaner B111 Klne and Kenneth Smlth also
chose the C V A L meet to establlsh a new A 1-1 S record of 3 40 4X5 to beat
the 3 42 set up 1n 1925 by Weulfe Montmll Marshall and Hardy at the Penn Re
lays but the team was forced to lccept second place to a stronv Handley h1gh team
wh1ch won 1n 3 40 1X5
The 1937 season was not one of numerous VICIOTICS but new talent was d1s
covered whlch WI11 be valuable IH 1938 and 1939 No polnts were scored at the
UUIVCTSIYY of Maryland on May 1 but the CIEY champlonshlp was captured for
the seventh consecutlve t1me by turnlng back Fort 1-1111 83 54 ID a dual meet on
May 16 For the second consecut1ve year no Allegany man could score a f1rst
place at W1nc1aester rn the C V A L but Gaffney Ken Smlth and the Mlle Re
lay team turned IH some sensatlonal seconds The annual P A L meet at Falrgo
on1une 4 ended w1th A 1-1 S aga1n 1n second place A new hlgh score of169W
po1nts was made but Central hlgh of Lonaconlng topped that w1th 182 For the
first t1me slnce the mauguratlon of these county meets Allegany was able to enter
both senlor and Jumor h1gh events and of course a much h1gher po1nt total was
attalned The state meet at 13a1t1more on 1une 11 brought rather med1ocre per
formances and a rather low ratrng of the Allegany county athletes ln general 1
IS th1s wr1ter s be11ef that rn the past too many Allegany county representatlves
d1d not keep the best of tra1n1ng rules and were not IH top cond1t1on for the1r
events on the day of the meet The all t1me records for A 1-1 S track and f1e1c1
