FOREWORD
As a final recording of events in our last year at Allegany, we publish this, the
third edition of THE MIRROR. i
In this volume we have tried to give an impression of our experiences in high
school.
If, in the future, this book may be opened again and again, we trust that each
opening will serve to bring back memories of good times' spent with friends at
Allegany High.
"I am listening for the voices
Which I heard in days of old."
DEDICATION
We, the Senior Class of 1934, to show our appreciation for his most incilcul
able help and unfailing service, do dedicate this volume of THE MIRROR
to i
LEVVYN C. DAVIS.
JAMES S. SPITZNAS
Principal
We are Very proud and happy to have a picture of our principal in this
MIRROR of 1934. Although Mr. Spitznas came to us at the beginning of our Junior
year, we feel that he is an old friend. VV e have never asked for advice that he has
has not given it cheerfully. -

THE SENIOR CLASS
The Senior Class of '34, writing its history, feels much as a young man of
twenty might feel if he were asked to write the story of his life. A past needs
to be dimmed by many years before it can be quite safely transferred to paper.
It took us several weeks back in the good old month of September, 1933, to
realize that we were actually Seniors, and at least twice as many months to forget
it again. Of course, we occupied the front seats when the school assembled in the
auditorium, and moved with a great deal more dignity, otherwise, school life pro-
ceded much as before.
L It is difficult for us to express our gratitude to our faculty and fellow-students,
yet we shall never forget the guidance and kindness of the former, and the co-oper-
ation of the latter during our school life at Allegany.
We hope and firmly believe that you will continue to hold high the standards
of our school. We trust that the Class of '34 may leave a few footprints on the
sands of Allegany, that you who follow will be proud to emulate. ,

THE JUNIOR CLASS
Now the Junior Class, the class of '35, speaks, and all must listen. for is this
not the Senior 'Class of the coming year? The Juniors have led the Seniors a merry
chase for the highest scholastic rating and have played an important part in athletics,
music, debate, declamation and dramatics. ' '
Perhaps the Junior event which created most excitement was the Jnnior-Senior
Prom on May 4th. True to tradition, it was a success. You may still see the
eifects, as the students waltz through the halls ot Allegany.
VVe, of the Junior Class, expect to assume the roles of real Allegany leaders
when September, 1934, arrives, and then, as Seniors, we shall strive to serve our
alma mater, after the spirit of the class of '34.

THE soPHoMoRE CLASS
It was really a rather frightened herd of Sophomores that wandered about the
corridors during the first few weeks of school. Although wisdom has, in the past,
been attributed to only the members of the Senior Class, we feel that we have
exhibited true Wisdom in our selection of Miss Helen Dyer as our class adviser.
The most important activity of the class of of '36 was the Sophomore Recep-
tion. Here the Sophomores showed the upper-classmen that they are worthy to be
called Alleganians.
Members of the Sophomore Class have been loyal supporters of all school
activities, and have done much to make this school year successful.

Holding higi the banners of previous records set by Allegany High Student
Councils, the council of 1933-34 accomplished many things beneficial to the
school. Among these, two organizations, the Boys' Co-operative League and
the Public Speaking Club were formed. Committees were formed at the beginning
of the year to take care of all problems. The enforcement of the Point System was
one of the first big projects to be undertaken. The Honor Roll points were re-
duced from 18 to 15 points through efforts of this group." An assembly program,
which proved quite helpful to the students, was presented by the Council. One of
the largest projects ever undertaken by a Council was Loyalty Night which was a
great success in all respects. Interclass basketball games were organized and a sale
of handbooks was conducted. A great improvementin assembly programs was
noticed which may be accerdited to the Student Council. Through the medium
of the Council, an Education Day was conducted upon the opening of the new
building.

The Girls"Hi-Y of Allegany is a most efficient and active organization.
There are thirty girls in the Hi-Y: Fifteen Seniors, ten juniors and tive Sopho-
mores. The aim of the club is to elevate the level of Christian character in the
school and community.
This year the Hi-Y was hostess to the Allegany County Hi-Y Clubs at an all-
day conference, including discussion groups, a banquet and a dance, held in con-
junction with the Boys' Hi-Y Club.
The Hi-Y gave a party New Year's day. The club also held various bowling
and swimming parties.
The Girls' Hi-Y has had a very profitable year. The success of the organiza-
tion has been due to the advisership of Miss Clive Simpson.

The Boys' Hi-Y Club has completed a year of extensive activity.
Co-operating with the Girls' Hi-Y, the two clubs acted as hosts at the County
Hi-Y conference, and sponsored a banquet and ball. This was an outstanding social
event.
The Boys' Hi-Y had charge of the annual bonfire before the LaSalle game,
gave the Girls' Hi-Y a party, presented their annual farce comedy to the school
assembly, managed the Allegany-Pennsylvania Ave. swimming meet, and climaxed
the year with a banquet.
Members of the club express their sincere thanks to Mr. Bowers and Mr.
Davis for leadership during a very successful year.

The Choral Club has terminated another year of success. It is one of the
popular musical organizations of the school.
During the scholastic years of 1933 and 1934, the club was present on various
programs. The Easter assembly, sponsored by the club, was one of our most
outstanding and effective performances. Q
The girls also assisted in the Valentine Day assembly and participated in song
at the Preliminary Declamation contest. fl-
This year the club made a new appearance. They adopted the plan of wearing
afternoon dresses, which made a very lovely elTect in combination with their
voices. i
The success of the club is due largely to the ability of its director, Miss Dor-
othy Willison.

Handicapped from the Hrst by a lack of experienced singers, the Glee Club
has nevertheless had a successful year. At the Spring Concert and their annual
assembly program, the boys proved again that hard and persistent work is the
means toward success. A
Few members of the club are Seniors, and the training and experience the
underclassmen have receivd will assure greater activity to future glee clubs. R
Mr. Taylor has workd hard with this organization, and its impovement is
due mainly to his untiring efforts, Nancy Barnard's loyalty as accompanist has also
contributed toward the club's eventual success.

This year Allegany's Orchestra has been outstanding in several respects.
Under Miss Willison's leadership, the best balanced orchestra in the history of the
school has set a new standard in musical interpretation.
The orchetra played at all school assemblies, dramatic productions, declama-
tion contests and debates. It was invited to furnish -them music for the I. O. U. A.
M. Memorial service and at the Allegany and Flintstone High School Commence-
ments.
Six members of the orchestra played the difficult musical score in "My Mary-

at Baltimore. ,
This organization has clone much to popularize good music in the school.

Carrying on the traditions and ideals of old, the Allegany Band has been
very active this year. Probably the most important single improvement was the
new blue and white capes purchased for each member through the thoughtfulness
and generosity of the A. D. K. and Mr. Wickard. Robed in these, the band became
an outstanding attraction in the Armistice Day Parade, and at the Allegany-LaSalle
football game. ' '
. 'The band played at all other home football and basketball contests. A splen-
did assembly program, and participation in the -Sophomore Reception, the bonfire
before the LaSalle game, Loyalty Night, and Spring Concert mark other activities
of this popular organization.

The Octet is not Only one of the most popular active musical organizations in
school, but also in the community. One of the main reasons for its success is its
ability to be prepared to sing at short notice.
Among the places at which the octet has sung this year are: Presbyterian
Church, Mt. Royal Parent-Teachers Association, the Allegany Christmas Program,
Kiwanis Club, Rotary Club and Lions Club. The octet has sung for a number
of years at the Flintstone High School Commencement and Allegany's Senior
Sermon and Graduation Exercises. Q
The success of the octet is mainly due to the fine ability of Miss Willison to
direct group singing.

The Girls' League, one of Allegany's active organizations, is composed of all
the girls in the school. The League meets bi-weekly, alternating between general
andsectional meetings, at which the different phases of etiquette have been dis-
cussed.
The League cabinet, composed of a member from each home-room, transacts
the business. The work of the League is divided among the various committees,
namely: Social, League Headquarters, Big Sister, Lost and Found, Program and
Social Service. '
The iirst activity of the year was the annual tea for the purpose of acquaint-
ing the Sophomores with upper-classmen. This helped to develop feelings of friend-
ship and co-operation which are the main factors in making the League a success.
The Social Service Committee sonsored the "Wl1ite Thanksgiving" by dis-
tributing baskets to the needy.
A Girls' Tag Dance was held during the Thanksgiving recess to welcome the
Boys' Co-operative League and to celebrate the result of the Allegany-LaSalle
football game. This type of dance became so popular that a second one was held
in the spring. '

THE ALCOHI MIRROR
The Alcohi MIRROR, Allegany's bi-weekly publication, is an indispensable
organ of school life. I
The annual subscri ation cam Jaiffn was inau urated at the oneninff of school
l as e,
by the presentation of "A Century of Progress," a one-act play, as an assembly
program. The ensuing campaign was characterized by the "blue feather," which
was worn by all who subscribed. . .
Programs for the Sophomore Reception were furnished by the staff in the
form of a miniature Alcohi TNIIRROR.
Having been entered in the Maryland Scholastic Press Association contest,
the Alcohi MIRROR won second place. It also won honors in the National Scholastic
Press Association. t
Following the precedent of the whole nation, the staff sponsored a "Presi-
dent's Birthday Ball," honoring President Roosevelt on his Fifty-second birthday.
-On Education Day an attractive and interesting exhibition of the editions
issued this year was on display. Another feature of the exhibition was a typical
newspaper office arranged by the members of the staff. Q '
The Alcohi MIRROR experienced one of the most successful years in all its
history under the capable supervision of Miss Mary Murray, faculty adviser.

The initial production of the year was a one-act play, "The Valiant." It was
given as the main attraction at the Sophomore reception.
For the tenth consecutive year, the club presented the annual Christmas pro-
gram, Santa Claus and all the trimmings-was it effective? We ask you!
On November 16th and 17th, the "Show-Off" was presented. There were
capacity audiences both nights. The proceeds were put to the fund for buying Capes
for the band.
The colossal production of the year was -the elaborately presented "My Mary-
land." Although primarily a school production, Alpha Delta Kappa was largely
responsible for its success. Mr. Wickard was the general director for the show.
On April 24th A. D. K. held its dance. It was a "My Maryland" dance and
clever and unique decorations were used.
After such a successful year, we can say "farewell" with best wishes for
the future Alpha Delta Kappas.

PUBLIC SPEAKING AT ALLEGANY
DECLAMATIGN
The annual Tasker G. Lowndes declamation contest was held at Allegany
High in December. Nineteen boys and girls took part in the pre-preliminary, and
live boys and five girls in the school finals. They were: Helen Raye Miller,
Mary Margaret Daugherty, Catherine Lee, Sara Collins, Mary Shafferg and
Straton Bruce, Wayne Buckle, Elwood Barkan, john N iland and Howard Fawcett.
Straton Bruce and Helen Raye Miller were declared the winners and awarded' gold
medals. AlthoughgAllegany's representatives did not win the county contest, the
experience gained by the contestants cannot be over-estimated. It is noteworthy
that all the boys who participated in the school declamation finals were members of
the County Championship Debating Teams. Miss Mary Murphy, coach of both
activities, deserves the sincere gratitude of all interested in public speaking at
Allegany.
The declamation and debate participants were the guests of the school at a
banquet given in their honor at Romney, W. Va., on April 19, 1934. Mr. Kopp,
Mr. Spitznas, Mr. Pugh and Mr. Lowndes and the members of the Allegany
faculty were there to do honor to the team's successful climax of the public
speaking program at Allegany. -

DEBATE
Debating the question, "Resolved, That the powers of the President of the
United States should be substantially increased as a settled policy," the two teams
of Allegany High brought the County Championship of the Ferman G. Pugh
Intterscholastic Debate to our school.
The preliminary debate between the Allegany teams on March 16 resulted in a
3-O decision for the negative side. On March 23 the negative team traveled
to Frostburg to debate Beall High, winning there 2-l at the same time the ,Allegany
affirmative team received a 3-0 triumph over Barton at Allegany.
Only one other school in the county, Central High of Lonaconing, had two
victorious teams, so on March 27 a final deciding debate was held, this contest
giving Allegany first county honors.
The members of the two championship teams were: Affirmative, Carl Low,
Elwood Barkman, John Niland and Louis Ort: negative, Straton Bruce, Wayne
Buckle, jane Roberts and Howard Fawcett. Medals were awarded to Jane Roberts
and Carl Low.
Miss Murphy entertained her winning teams April '11 with a theatre party
followed by refreshments at the Golden Gate Tea Room.
Much of the honor goes to Miss Murphy, coach, whose hard and patient work
made possible these winning teams. By giving freely of her time and effort she
has achieved what many seek but few attain-success.

Although a new organization this year, the Public Speaking Club gives prom-
ise of being the forerunner of a well-balanced public speaking program to be
carried on in coming years. '
Organized too late to be of great value this year, the willingness with which
underclassmen sought to learn of the technique of public speaking indicates there
will be co-operation with any program initiated in future years.

FIVE CONSECUTIVE STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
As the school year of 1933-34 draws to a close we find that Allegany has
done it again, won for the fifth time, in succession, the State Basketball Cham-
pionship.
Allegany is the only school in Maryland to have accouiplished such a feat,
The team as usual was under the watchful eyes of Coach Bowers. It was
composed of Vlfilliam Ross, Paul Twigg, George Rice, Herman Koegel, Adam
Sterne, Russel Curry, William Miller and Norman Gerdeman. ,
It seems as if Coach Bowers is able to turn out a championship team regard-
less of the material from which he has to choose. , I .
The years 1932-33 proved to be another successful season as far as basketball
is played at Allegany. Paul Twigg and William Findlay played as well as expected
from any players.
Allegany went through the whole season only being defeated by one team.
The team consisted of: VVilliam Findlay, Paul Twigg, Charles Morris, Her-
man Koegel and Edward Diehl.
The basketball season of 1931-32 climaxed Allegany High School athletics
for this year. The third consecutive state championship in that sport was won.
Once again, as in former years, Coach Bowers had performed miracles with the
team. Without the coaching of Mr. Bowers, Allegany would never have performed
such a feat.
Two new players from Greene Street were added to the lineup, Herman
Koegel as guard and Paul Twigg as forward.
The 1930-31 aggregation, consisting of Captain "Ike" Cessna, VVil1ima Som-
inerville, Dick Bruce, Bernard Bealkey, John Rhind, Ellis Nave and Ellery VVard
battled nobly against its competitors, and finally won the championship of l1Vestern
Maryland.
The 1929-30 championship team won the Western Maryland Interscholastic
League title only by hard work and co-operation.
Keyed to its highest pitch, it then defeated Friendsville High School, Takoma
Park High School, Middletown High School, and finished the season by winning
over Cambridge High School, the Eastern Shore team, by an overwelming score.
The team which was responsible for these victories consisted of Edgar Cessna,
Richard Bittner, Charles Smith, Hugh MacMillan and Leo Twigg.

TRACK IN 1933
The Hrst track meet of the l933 season was the Chamber of Commerce Meet
held at Fairgo, April 29. Alco clinched the meet by winning six first places and
placing in many more. Gale and Hast took first places in the 4-40 and 880 yard
dashes. The 440 sprint relay and medley relays were taken without any trouble.
The Maryland Track Meet did not prove to be very easy for Allegany. Al-
though failing to score a single point, Allegany made a fine showing in the Annual
Interscholastic Meet of the University of Maryland, held at College Park, May 5.
Allegany trackmen have once more been the victors in the Annual City Tracks
Meet. It has retained the city scholastic championship ever since it was inaugurated
five years ago. Minnicks led the meet by copping the highest number of points.
May 27 Allegany journeyed to Wi11cl1este1', Va., and again added another
meet to its records. Edwin Gale set a new record in the 440-yard dash: Hast
received second place in the 8803 Alvin Serf led the runners to cop the mile, and
Claude Miller was the victor in the pole vault.
Homer Peacock received the highest number of points.
The County Track Meet to which everyone looks forward, proved fatal to
Allegany. Allegany made the poorest showing in years, but proved its ability as
trackmen by being the strongest in the Senior events.
Allegany copped three Firsts, three seconds, one third, and one fourth.
Last, but not least, the meet held at Baltimore, June 9, was the final one for
Allegany participants.
The Medley Relay Team was the only one to bring back any honors, it
received second place.
W'ith Allgany's points and those of Beall High School, Allegany County tied
with Montgomery to win second place in the state meet.
Allegany's rating, as having a first class track team, is due to its coach, Foy A.
Curry. Witli Mr. Curry's knowledge of track and field tactics and the co-operation
of the team, the 1933 track season proved to be 11 very successful one.

ACKNOVVLEGMENTS AND APPRECIATION S
In order to make possible the publication of this book, the staif must be helped
by the patrons of Allegany in the form of Boosters. We do, at this time, wish to
thank all those who have shown that they are friends and supporters of student
activities of Allegany High School. -
The Senior Class carried itself successfully through another year only by the
help of it faculty adviser: Harold C. Wickard, director of the Senior Class play
and Senior Assemblyg Neal O. Harris, social adviser, also in charge of graduation,
Senior outing, and Prom, Lewyn C. Davis, adviser of the annual, financial adviser
and director of Senior Class Night. We wish to thankthem for the kind and
generous help and advice in all our student activities and problems.
There is no place in the book to express appreciation to those who made
possible our education, the most important factor of high school life, so at this
time we wish to thank the instructors and parents for their unlimited help and
gentle patience in making possible these last three years of school life.
I wish to show my appreciation for the splendid help and co-operation shown
by the four girls who acted as stenographers for this book: Niletta Wilkinson,
Betty Wilson, Gertrude Kompanek and Frances Wadsworth.

THE KEYNOTE
OF OUR ENDEAVOR
HROUGH the centuries quality has been
the keynote of the craftsman's endeavor. As
workers in the field of the Graphic Arts wc
cherish the traditions that have come down to us from
the printing craftsmen of old. The tools with 'vhich
they worked may have been limited, but the ideals
that guided their efforts could not be improved. They
are the same today. The quest for quality goes on
and on.
Printing that radiates an atmosphere of quality
can never be commonplace-in its appearance or its
message. It truthfully reflects the environment from
which it emerges and the results it produces, for the
author or the advertiser, are in proportion to the
printer's vision of his task. A
THE ROEBUCK Mark of Quality, wherever found,
identifies the printed matter on which it appears as
handiwork in which quality is the object sought and
the result achieved.
