After beginning the season by losing dual meets to Aptos, King City, and Salinas. the girls' team did not fare well in the remainder of the season. However, the cindergals did boast some outstanding individual performers. 148 Athletics Alisal Crcrpplers Capture CCS Crown For the first time in the history of Alisal High, the Trojan varsity wrestling team captured the Central Coast Section Wrestling title. A five man contingent, led by defending heavyweight champion Dave Ceja, traveled to Monta Vista High in March to participate in the CCS Tournament. Art Ocampo l97i and Mark Yamaguchi i105l failed to place, but these two fine grapplers exhibited excellent wrestling both in the tourney and throughout the season. Javier Alvarez i'l15l waded through his competition before falling victim to a loss by decision in the finals. Roger Diaz l133l, after an exhibition of extremely impressive wrestling, suffered a severe knee injury which prevented him from competing in the finals. Diaz. posting a phenomenal record of forty wins and one loss, and teammate Alvarez received second place medals for their efforts. The story was different for 235 pound Dave Ceja. After losses in the finals of the league and region tourneys. Ceja -f' vanquished any doubts as he mowed 'N' nm, down anyone in his way to complete .A ' l Wgb, 'MQ 2 the finals as a two-time CCS champ. Q C' ,fn '- ' - 4. ' l' ' 1 1 It would be impossible to overlook the i - ff! n performance of team mentor Terry 5-rt ' Espinoza. For his outstanding coaching. ii Espinoza was named the CCS Coach 'N of the Year . Coach Espinoza and his wrestlers deserve high praise for their part in the greatest performance ever by any of Alisal's wrestling squads. Roger Diaz shows the type of aggressiveness which helped him to a 40-1 won loss log and second place in the CCS

Coach Frees sited the teamwork and competitive play of her squad as its major advantage. The JV's were led by guard Cindy Caraveo. and center Beth Martinez.
