fresh-Soplw angers Promising for future Coach Al Garner's frosh-soph basketball squad finished in the same manner as their varsity and junior varsity counterparts as they underwent a lackluster year to conclude their season with four wins against fifteen losses. Their league log ended at 2-12. Considering there were only four sophomores on the team. the future Trojans did a commendable job the entire season. The young squad was led by the guard tandem of Homer Hernandez and Willie Cuellg, These two ballhawks proved to be a threat to any tearn during the season. Rey Nicanor and Bruce Holt filled in the forward positions. while Ricky Alvarez started at center. Credited as valuable substitutes were Robert Sides and mid-season recruit John Dew. Sides and Dew contributed heavily in the rebounding department and occasionally exploded for high-scoring nights. With almost all players as possible returnees, the winning tradition is sure to return to the ranks of AIisal's basketball squads of Freshmen and Sophomores. S-.iff -'T mlillle u . Varsity Cropplers Reign As eague Champs AIisal's varsity grapplers put it all together this year as they captured the Monterey Bay League crown with a perfect 9-O dual meet record. Coach Terry Espinoza's wrestlers waded through all competition to capture the title. The dual meet season was highlighted when Alisal met North Salinas in the Viking gym. North High, predicted to give Alisal stiff competition, was smashed by the Trojans, 33-18. In tournaments, the team usually had to settle for a close second. The Trojans ended in second at the Alisal. Ayer, and Gonzales Tournaments. However, at the Blossom Hill Invitational. the Trojans showed their strength by capturing first. lndividual performances at these tourneys were outstanding. In the first tournament of the year at Ayer High, champ- ionships were won by Roger Diaz C1381 and Dave Ceja lhwti, Art Ocampo l95l, Mark Yamaguchi l105i, and Javier Alvarez l1 121 won second place medals. Next was the Alisal Invitational, where Diaz and Ceja, along with Wayne Knight l195l emerged as champs. Yamaguchi was the sole second place finisher. At the Blossom Hill Tourney, Yamaguchi won first place, followed by second place finishers Diaz, Alvarez. and Ceja. At Del Mar, Diaz was again champ, while Alvarez settled for second. Gonzales was next, and Diaz surprised no one by capturing first, while Ceja, Knight, and Yamaguchi won second place medals. ln post-season competition, Alisal took second at the MBL Tournament. League champs for Alisal were Diaz and Alvarez, with Ceja and Yamaguchi finishing second. Stiff competition at the Region IV Tournament thinned out the Trojan ranks, but the final placings showed Roger Diaz. with a fantastic 36-1 record, at first with Javier Alvarez. These two, with qualifiers Dave Ceja. Mark Yamaguchi, and Art Ocampo, advanced to the CCS meet at Monta Vista High in San Jose.
