t 't cnsity fingers Experience wstmting Season Lack of experience proved to be too much as Alisal's varsity cagers finished a disappointing season with a 6-18 overall won-loss record, with league play at 3-11, Boasting an immense array of height, Alisal thrashed through the Alisal Invitational Tournament to capture third place, losing only to even- tual champion Overfelt. But it was downhill afterwards as the Trojans dropped their next five games before defeating Palma. Alisal launched its league schedule on the right note by smothering Soquel and Santa Cruz. In the next game, however, the Trojans fell to Watsonville and proceeded to lose to Aptos in the following contest, The Trojans seemed unable to muster any type of an attack as they continued their losing string to eight more games. This dismal skid was halted at the North Salinas gym, where Gus Gutierrez's shot at the buzzer defeated North High, 54-53. ln the final contest of the season, the Alisal cagers threw a mighty scare into league champion Monterey by rallying from a twenty point deficit to almost beat the Toreadors, Coach Haddan had high praise for senior Craig Andrus. Andrus led the team with his leadership and tenacious defense. Gus Gutierrez was also outstanding, though his glory came in the final three games. lt was Gus' basket which ended the long losing streak, and his shooting and defense which almost defeated Salinas and Monterey.
