isfortvne aunts Varsity footballers The 1974 Alisal varsity gridders faced a season of frustration and costly injuries in finishing with a 3-6 won-loss record. Coach Chuck FiIice's squad. consisting of immensely talented and skillful players, just could not come up with the big break, and most of the losses could have gone either way. After blowing past all opposition in the Jamboree, the Trojans faced San Jose powerhouse Yerba Buena, and disposed of the Warriors, 30-19. The Green Machine's luck soured as they lost the next three games: all by late-game rallies. Facing Arroyo Grande in a non-league match, the Trojans put it all together in a sound 21-O thrashing of the San Luis Obispo team. The tide of victory turned again, however, as Alisal dropped the next three games, before gaining a win over Salinas High by forfeit. Although the team's record does not reflect it, this squad was loaded with excellent ballpalyers. Offensively, the passing combination of Danny Camacho and Ed Richards was very effective in putting points on the scoreboard. At tailback. senior Alan Douglas was one of the best in the league. Also, Jim Romig, Dave Schmidt, Mario Flojas, and Jesus Rico greatly helped the Trojan offense to click. In addition, two defensive backs, Gil Ruiz and Chuck Bozzo always seemed to be in the right place to snare stray passes. Middle-linebacker Joe Dew made an impressive showing throughout the season.
