The young cagers started their season by capturing the second place trophy in the Salinas Key Club Tournament, losing only to the host Salinas High team in the finals. The frosh-soph didn't fare too well in the rest of their pre- season, losing three of the next four meetings. The frosh-soph team went through seven league games without a loss, but lost to Salinas in the eigth. Starting with that loss, the Troyers did not win again until, after six straight defeats, they smashed North High. The young squad dropped its last game to Monterey in overtime. 3. , it This year's frosh-soph team boasted a duo of talented guards in floor-leader David Puno and Tony Flimando. Ei 126 Athletics arslty rapplers D1splay Strength In Tournament The 1973-74 varsity wrestling team, coached by mentor Terry Espinosa, had its ups and downs in dual meet competition, but more than made up for it in tournaments and post-league competition. The varsity squad split its dual meet season with a 5-5 league record, 6-5-1- overall. The Trojan grapplers opened their season by thrashing a visiting Gilroy team. but in the next dual meet, they needed a pin by heavyweight David Ceja in the final match to come from behind to tie Mission Trail League powerhouse Gonzales. ln league competition, the Trojans gained their five victories by triumphing over Soquel, Aptos, San Lorenzo Valley, Santa Cruz, and Harbor. ln their sixth league meet, they lost to a tough Seaside squad, Following that, the Alisal grapplers proceeded to lose their four remaining dual meets by miniscule margins, to finish fifth in the final league standings, In tournament competition, Alisal performed extremely well. First, the team entered the Del Mar Invitational. The outstanding team performer turned out to be Soupy Marquez, who came away from the tournament with a first place medal in the 145 pound division. Also placing high was a suprising Mark Domingo l138l as he won second place honors, and he was joined by third place finishers Javier Alvarez l112l, Roger Diaz l133l, and David Ceja lhwtl. Next, Alisal emerged victorious in its own Alisal Invitational Tourney. Outstanding performances were turned in by Ceja and Alvarez, who took firsts in their respective divisions. They were followed by second place finisher Roger Diaz, and third placers Marquez and Art Ocampo l95l. The MBL Tourney was next, and Ceja, Alvarez, and Marquez came away as league champions in the weight classes, with Diaz and Mark Yamaguchi l97l garnered second place honors. Alisal hosted the Region IV Tournament, and all five qualifiers from the league meet wrestled well. Ceja and Diaz copped championships in their weight divisions, and were joined by Yamaguchi, Alvarez, and Marquez, in advancing to the C.C.S. Meet in San Jose. Although the wrestlers met a lot of extremely tough competition, Soupy Marquez placed third while big Dave Ceja waded through his competition to capture first place, and thus becoming the first CCS wrestling champ in Alisal's history. Both grapplers went on to the State Meet in Hayward.
