Varsity Cagers Face Frustrations In MBL Play After four years of dominating the MBL, Coach Corky Haddan's varsity basketball team found itself in an unfamiliar spot when it finished in the cellar of the league's Southern Division. The 1973- 74 cagers completed the season with a respectable 12-12 overall record, but a less satisfying 5-9 league record. The varsity cagers tipped off their season with a third consecutive Alisal Tournament championship. Ron Ritchie was named as the MVP, while Danny Martinez and Duane Anderson were chosen to the All-Tourney team. They also captured the consolation trophy at the Paul Walters Tournament. League play opened next, and the Trojans finished the first series of games against Northern teams with a record of 4 wins and 2 losses. As games in the Southern Division got underway, it seemed as though the Trojan luck went sour, The squad dropped their next seven games by an average of two points each. Alisal closed their season in a spirited way by defeating Monterey. Danny Martinez was the outstanding team player and also the league's leading scorer with a 20.6 point average, including a 37 point outburst against San Lorenzo. Flon Ritchie and Duane Anderson were the defensive standouts and also helped considerably with the scoring. Two bright spots of the team were sophomores Steve Robertson and Jerry Odom, whose skillful play promises to give Alisal basketball an exciting future.
