LIGHTWEIGHTS AND LIGHTWEIGHT RESERVES BATTLE ROUGH COMPETITION After defeating North High in the first game of the season, the lightweight gridsters, coached by Pat Steele and John Romero, suffered two setbacks at the hands of Salinas and Monterey. After a forfeit by Seaside, the Troyers were victorious over Watsonville with a score of 12-6, but then lost the next three games, to North High, and again to Salinas and Monterey. Quarterback Albert Mazzuca was injured in the second game against North High, so Dave Layus and Leo Hernandez filled in and showed their ability at quarterback. The leading offensive players were Albert Mazzuca, Dave Layus, Ron Harris, Pete Blanco, Leo Hernandez, Gary Silva, and Richard Castillo. Outstanding on defense were Clarence Damasco, Carlos Cali, Max Houser, Robert Rojas, John Paz, Danny Mora, and Ken Bunden, Other promising players were Napoleon Isla, Mike Morris, Alex Pardo, and Mark Schmidt. With few reserves returning from last season, and because many were moved up to the lightweight squad this year, the lightweight reserve football team had little experience. The team did, however, win both games over North High and both against Seaside, one by forfeit. Team members cited for their fine playing were Jeff Hollis, Mike Banda, Richard Kelley, John Madriaga, Gabriel Blanco, Jose Landeros, and Noel Cadriel. The varsity team placed second in two of the meets, losing to Monterey and Watsonville respectively. Both of the J.V. and Varsity teams won the city cross-country meet, as the varsity took the first six medals. In addition to their regular schedule, the Trojan distance runners participated in the Blossom Hill lnvitational at Leigh High, the Mt. Madonna lnvitational at Mt. Madonna, the Regional Ill Championship at York School, and the Monterey Bay League Championship at Santa Cruz. Returning from last year's varsity squad were Glenn Ryburn, Dale Rodgers, Dominic Ramirez, David Stein, and Mike Casarez. Returning J.V. runners were Tony Acierto, Ray Childers, Bob Ocampo, and Stan Marple. Mike Casarez, a Senior and veteran distance runner, placed exceptionally high in every meet and was named top Varsity runner. The top J.V. runner was junior Tony Acierto, who also did well in each meet.
