LIGHTWEIGHTS AND LIGHTWEIGHT RESERVES BATTLE ROUGH COMPETITION After defeating North High in the first game of the season, the lightweight gridsters, coached by Pat Steele and John Romero, suffered two setbacks at the hands of Salinas and Monterey. After a forfeit by Seaside, the Troyers were victorious over Watsonville with a score of 12-6, but then lost the next three games, to North High, and again to Salinas and Monterey. Quarterback Albert Mazzuca was injured in the second game against North High, so Dave Layus and Leo Hernandez filled in and showed their ability at quarterback. The leading offensive players were Albert Mazzuca, Dave Layus, Ron Harris, Pete Blanco, Leo Hernandez, Gary Silva, and Richard Castillo. Outstanding on defense were Clarence Damasco, Carlos Cali, Max Houser, Robert Rojas, John Paz, Danny Mora, and Ken Bunden, Other promising players were Napoleon Isla, Mike Morris, Alex Pardo, and Mark Schmidt. With few reserves returning from last season, and because many were moved up to the lightweight squad this year, the lightweight reserve football team had little experience. The team did, however, win both games over North High and both against Seaside, one by forfeit. Team members cited for their fine playing were Jeff Hollis, Mike Banda, Richard Kelley, John Madriaga, Gabriel Blanco, Jose Landeros, and Noel Cadriel.
