To the Class of 1963: May, 1963
You are now finishing the first lap in the course of a race that is probably
the most exciting and challenging one in all the history of mankind - and
we wish you well clear up to the finish.
No previous class has faced a World of quite so many recent or impending
changes and problems in a single life-time: astronauts and moon flights
and the exploration of a world that Columbus didn't even dream aboutg
biochemists and the search for the secrets of the origin of lifey birth con-
trol and the threat of an overpopulated planet: race riots and the struggle
for the universal rights of man: modern "muckrakers" such as Rachel Carson
and the compulsion to know the truth about our ills: life and death struggle
of Communism with Democracy, and many, many more, some of which
would put Munchausen to shame.
You are thrust into the middle of it, you and thousands of others in high
schools all over our land. And those of us who, like Moses on Mount
Nebo, will just get a glimpse of your promised land may perhaps be
forgiven for a tinge of envy: yet we wish you Godspeed and a safe journey!
Sincerely ,
. i. Y

Mr. Cha11y's ready smile and helpful attitude do much
the adjustment to junior high a pleasant one for new
entn graders. With even a larger group of students, his
work has increased, but
he has taken it in stride.
-,ff
After three years as principal of Algona
High School, Mr. Allen has proven himself to
be a competent administrator, and in doing so
has gained the respect of the Student body. We
say, "Congratulations on a job well done !", and
we hope that his future years may be as success-
ful as this year.
Our hats off to you, Mr.
Chally .

During the 1962- 1963 school year there was one
smiling face at AHS that had a little trouble with English
at first, but was at the top of his American History class
and could ski like he'd been on a mountain or two in his
time. It was Tom Hanni, Algona High's foreign exchange
student from Baden, Switzerland. Though Tom was
rarely seen without his little blue book, no trouble was
encountered in communicating the mutual respect and
admiration which existed between Tom and the school.
Tom's talks to the school and various groups around
town were greatly enjoyed. His sense of humor, friendly
greeting, and familiar figure will all be greatly missed.
Tom can be sure that he has left many friends behind
who will not soon forget him.

WELCOME WHITTEMORE
In 1962 Algona High added many new students, the majority being from the Whittemore consoli-
dation. These unfamiliar faces soon became quite familiar as the new students took part in many
activities. The Fresh-Soph football team had a number of welcome additions from Whittemore and Brian
Espe gave Algona basketball fans something to talk about. Trudy Betts gave the Algona girls a few
tips on the finer points of girls' basketball and also helped the juniors a great deal in their Field Day
victory. Besides athletics, Whittemore students have also added to our band and choruses and they
have many fine scholars among them also. Whittemore has surely been a welcome addition.

The Freshman Class rapidly adjusted to high school life by obtaining a high aca-
demic level and participating in several extra-curricular activities.
Both boys and girls proved to have musical talent as they represented their class
in band and chorus. Four boys even went so far as to form a Freshman Quartet.
Freshmen were also active in athletics and Freshman girls cheered their boys on
as cheerleaders and cadettes.
We're expecting great things from the class of '66 - Freshman, what do you say?

SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS--STANDING: Bruce McCullough, President. IN FRONT: Secretary, Norman
Benson: Vice-President, Rollie Perkins: Treasurer. Steve Hardy.
The sophomore class may ask themselves: what have we accomplished this year? Some will say
nothing: yet there can be no doubt that the sophomore class has made great advances toward the edu-
cational, athletic, and musical goals the seniors infallibly set each year. Our athletes have given us
every reason to be proud of them, and their future looks brighter. Included in our overall class excel-
lence is our musical ability, which reveals itself both in and out of band. Yes, the sophomores are on
their way--" Look out, juniors, here we come!"

"Pa1mie" gains a new companion
DEB
"I REFUSE to get nervous!" stated Mr. Palmer as he downed his fifteenth cup of coffee and two
more aspirins at the state debate finals in Iowa City. Nervous or not, "Pa1mie" led his varsity
debate squad composed of Kay Agena and Gary Colwell, negatives, and Tim Dailey and Bucky
Buchanan, affirmatives, to third place in the Class B state tournament. This is the highest an Al-
gona squad has placed since 1942.
The alternate varsity squad, Sharon Smith, Alan Holt, Alan Bode, and John Schutter, also had
a fine record and competed in several tournaments. John Phillips, the varsity alternate, found him-
self debating both sides of the question fsornetimes in the same debatej.
Bob Pratt was the only trophy winner in forensic activities this year. Bob placed high in oration,
interpretive reading, and after-dinner speaking, winning a plaque for his after-dinner speaking,
at the Coe tournament.
With his varsity squad leaving, "Pa1mie" is looking to the Junior Class to provide a team for
next year.

Doug Barr, President: Trucy Betts, Treasurer: Marilyn Black, Secretaryg Vicki Steil, Vice-President.
Our final year as underclassmen has come to an end, and we only regret that we, too,
must soon depart from AHS.
But, we shall always remember the fun we'Ve had this year - the homecoming float that
stayed together, and the voyage we took to the bottom of the sea. Our boys were active in
all sports, aiding our teams to the conference championships. We comprised half of the All-
State quartet, and added another district president to the Student Council.
To try to list all our accomplishments would be futile. We can only say we are proud to
be members of the Class of '64.

Tom Waller, Treasurer: Pat Conn, Vice-President: Lance Johnson, Secretary: and Bob Prah, President
Another school year has ended, but the accomplishments and abilities of the Class of
1963 will not soon be forgotten.
The superior athletic ability of the senior boys led our football, basketball, and
wrestling teams, of which seventy per cent of the members were seniors, on to conference
championships.
Algona High teachers will not soon forget the scholastic ability of the Class of 1963, who
boasts having a National Merit scholar.
The seniors proved themselves leaders in both band and the vocal music department,
providing some of the finest musical concerts for their community.
The Class of 1963 is ready to move on to the challenges the future - to greater obstacles
and even greater victories hoping always to be a credit to their society and A. H. S.

SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY, '63
Zap.. .Zap. . .bwee. . .bwee .... Comrade Nikita Allen reporting from the moon: "Comrades, I regret to inform
you that the moon is already inhabitedl lt seems that there is an experimental group from the United States, composed
of Algona High School's Class of 1963. Apparently this class has been chosen because of its superior academic achieve-
ments, superb physical stamina, and crowning social activities. These are truly prime specimens, comrades!
Here is a brief summary of the individual progress as I have seen it with my own eyes. After discovering this un-
usual settlement, I ate at Ruth's Maidrite. I introduced myself to one of Miss Chantland's waitresses. Nancy Fosnaugh.
She took my order back to the chief-cook-and-bottle-washer,Rog Brandow, While waiting for my order. I thumbed
through the local newspaper and turning to the sports page, I saw that the girls basketball team was doing quite well.
The teams coach, Pat Conn and the teams score keeper, Mike Schmidt, were quite optimistic about the team's progress.
The team was composed of: Carol Anlicker, Charyl Cook, Jane Cole, Luann Meyer. Jackie Medin, and Rhonda Brandow.
The team has new chartreuse uniforms made by Judy Willrett. Another item concerned the local golfer, Al Holt, who
recently won the Lunar Golf Championship. Other front page headlines announced the newly elected Governor, Bob
Pratt. Another newspaper item concerned the continuing gas war between Ever's Green Cheese Gas and McConnell's
Man in the Moon Gas Station. Glancing through the Want Ads. I noticed a local Moon Mover, Dave Reid, looking for
dates. Mike Gilbert also had an ad looking for bodies, to be used in his body shop for automobiles.
Later I was distracted by the sound of horses outside the restaurant. To my amazement, there sat a dark, curly-
haired girl atop a horse. The girl was waving a banner in one hand advertising Faber's Horse Stables and her famous
guest jockey, Linda Percival. Picking up after the horses was a man from Buchanan's Sanitary Service, namely, Bucky.
Following him was Haases' Hearse advertising Durant's Gravedigging Service. Bringing up the rear was Shorty Hutchin-
son driving Baker's lce-Cream Wagon.
After paying for my meal, I inquired as to how this group arrived on the moon. I was informed that the group had
been piloted by astronaut, Lance Johnson, who had been greatly aided by Bob Garms new power steering for spaceships
invention. As I started out the door. I heard the most terrible noise. I asked the town's Girl Scout Leader, Carol Ken-
yon, just what was going on. She said it was only the auctioneer, Dianne Malueg, selling some oi Al Bode's Sophomore
Sonnets. Highest bidder was the "Rich" beautician, Georgia.
As l walked on down the street, I glanced into the local theater and to my surprise saw a red-haired bespectacled,
cigarette boy dressed in green tights and peacock feathers, it was Gary Colwell. The billing on the theater listed May-
nard Shackelford as star in his latest release. "A Thin Man with a Lot of Desire". Co-stars of this great war epic were:
Tom Anderson, Don McBride, and Bill Bartlett. The female heroine was Vicki Marshall. A coming attraction was the
preview of Sneaky Camera Phillip's latest photography tricks in the new comedy, "Uncle Bill and all the Little Spechts".
Because l wanted to see much more of this amazing colony, I thumbed a ride with an albino cement truck driver
bearing the name of Bill Wetzel. Bill said that he was delivering cement to the canal fillers, Terry Zweiful and Ed
Helmers. but that I could ride along and see some of the country side ifl wanted to.
On the way out we passed the Lake of the Moon where Hutchins' Yacht Club is located. The general manager was
none other than Kay Agena. Bill pointed out a well known fisherman, Terry Brandow, out on the lake.
Since it was hot and dusty, we pulled off the road to the cool shade of Grimes' Root Beer Palace. Of course, Bill
knew all the car-hops. He pointed them out as Diane Kuhlman. Marcella Lovestad and Sharon Helmers. Bill also in-
troduced me to a couple local law-enforcers, Zap-gun Zimmerman and Lock-em-up Lewie fKentJ. Then out of the
clear blue sky, we heard a deafening sound usher forth from a blue, '53 Plymouth. Bill informed me that that was
Jack Williams just doing what came naturally.
We turned on the radio as we were leaving, just in time to hear a few of Larry Stratton's "Golden Oldies". As we
proceeded down the highway, we were passed by a blue streak. Bill said, "There goes the Ford Falcon endurance test
driver, Jim Parsons." We drove on and saw a caravan of tractors promoting the N. F.O. program, with president Mike
Kain, his hair waving majestically in the breeze, at the head. He was followed by John Schuffham, Galen Metzger,
Bob Patton, and Ruth Benschoter. White passing over one of the canal bridges, I happened to see a man setting a trap.
Bill said that that was Hank Ewoldt and he hardly ever opened his trap. Hank, together with cat exterminator, Mike
Slevin, served to keep the animal population in check.
Bill deposited his load and we returned to town. Before reaching the city limits we passed a weary traveler trudg-
ing along the road. Bill jokingly asked "Walking John Schutter" if he was tired of walking. Having been answered in
the affirmative, Bill told him that he should try running awhile. lncidentally, walking with John was a guy named.
"Crater climbing" Hanni,
Upon returning to town, Bill asked if I would like to have dinner at Skog's Supper Club. Once inside the club, I
was introduced to Bob Holcomb and Joyce Anderson, the club's most frequent customers. The billing for the evening
featured famous night club entertainer Sharon "Gypsy" Smith. accompanied by the carry out trio composed of Sammy
Burtis, Louis Kent, and Tim Dailey on the rhythm sticks. All the acts at the club are backed by the tremendous
"Venerable Bede's" consisting of Richy Hutchins, Bob Pratt. Gary Kelley, Torn Waller. and Jack Williams. Dick
Pratt plays with the groups on the bass, and John Phillips joins in on the floor.
We asked if there was a special guest for that evening-Skog's Hostess Marilyn Skow instantly replied that Miss
FBLA, Mary Steinhorst, was making a personal appearance. At the next table was the prominent town dentist, Paul
Maahs and his beautiful receptionist. Janice Ringsdorf. As we were talking to proprietor Skogstrom we found that he was
feeling blue because his moon-shiner friend. Craig Schmeling, had to send his smashed car to Helmke's Garage.
I asked Bill if there was anyone that I hadn't met, and he said that there were several girls, Judy Becker, Joan Ward,
Francie Zeigler and Karla Hinders, who took this day to go to the bottom side of the moon to drop off their letters in
bottles to their loved ones on earth. Other than that he was sure that I had seen all the members of the entire colony.
What's that you say, comrades? When am I coming back to Russia? Well, comrades, the truth is, that the com-
panionship is so fine up here that l've decided to stay ........
Comrade Nikita Allen signing off from the moon. . . over. . . and. . .out.
