N Y. STATE AGRICULTURAL AND TECHNICAL INSTITUTE -ZZ' Acting Director ot Agricultural and Technical Institute VVALTER C. HINKLE, Ivl.S. The New York State School ot Agriculture was established by an act ot the New York State Legislature in 1908. The first class began in September 1909 with 36 agriculture and 10 home economics students registered. The modern era ol the Institute began in 1936. At this time Paul S. Orvis assumed the Directorship and under his leadership the School began to grow to its present dimensions. In 1937 the name of the school was oFIiciaIIy changed to the New York State Agricultural and Technical Institute. Education was inaugurated throughout the Institute on a technical level and for the first time high school graduation was required for entrance. In 1942 the Institute was admitted to the American Association ol Junior Colleges. During the war years while Director Orvis was overseas, Truman A. Parish and Walter C. Hinkle became Acting Co-Directors. During the years 1943-1945 over 4500 persons were trained both on and oft campus in part-time and war training courses. In the autumn of 1948, when Mr. Orvis was appointed Director oi Food Distribution ot Europe under the E.C.A., Mr. Hinkle assumed the Acting Directorship ol the Institute. To keep pace with the rapid development oi the Institute, an extensive building program is antici- pated. Funds have been approved lor the construction oi an Industrial Building, a Frozen Foods Laboratory and Locker Plant, a Farm Machinery Building and a Home Economics Building. A temporary gymnasium is being completed and will be ready tor the Institute's intramural program in September. 22
