THE SCHGOL FOR AMERICAN CRAFTSMEN KN .K 12, , f is--Z .1 . 1 1 A Director of School for American Craftsmen HAROLD J. BRENNAN, MA. In the belief that the hand crafts should become more fully recognized in the field of art, the American Craftsmen's Educational Council organized the School for American Craftsmen. The School was opened in January, 1945 at Hanover, New Hampshire and became a part of the College of Liberal Arts when it asso- ciated with Alfred University in 1946. In its courses in pottery, woodworking, textiles, metalsmithing and wrought iron, the School aims to produce students who will be capable of carrying on a successful career in crafts. A natural question is, of what worth are the hand arts in a modern age? The survival of the crafts at any period of time depends upon their relationship to the contemporary culture. The craftsman in our era does not compete with the machine: he supplements it by acting as a stimulus to industry. Students and faculty automatically become members of The Journeyman, an organization affiliated with the American Craftsmen's Cooperative Council, Incorporated. This group functions independently within the school, and offers craftsmen retail and wholesale marketing outlets. The School for American Craftsmen attempts to apply common sense and a realistic understanding of contemporary problems, coupled with creative and artistic expression, to the age-old use of the hands of man. 20
