THE COLLEGE GF LIBERAL ARTS Dean of College of Liberal Arts 1 HAROLD O. BURDICK., M.A.,Sc.D. Many prospective college students experience difficulty in deciding upon a maior. The College of Liberal Arts offers a wide curriculum in cultural courses as well as in the fields of specialization. Upon matriculating ,the student is required to enroll in the civilization course which touches upon history, art, music and literature, thus enabling the student to get a perspective of the content of many fields. Today, there are two great trends in the College of Liberal Arts. There is an ever increasing emphasis upon graduate work. Many young people are preparing themselves in undergraduate work at Alfred to become doctors, lawyers and teachers. Alfred University also includes a graduate division which offers advanced courses leading to the degree of Master of Education, and, in certain fields, to the degree of Master of Arts. The other great trend in the College of Liberal Arts is towards an aggregation oi fields. A higher proportion of students are entering into social service, business, and nursing than ever before. ln this respect. it must be pointed out that many courses today are stressing the importance of the social viewpoint and students are constantly reminded of the necessity for them to be contributing members ol society. There is, ofcourse, a wide variety of possible maiors including: languages and literature, social studies, natural science and mathematics, business and secretarial studies, and nursing. ln particular, students are being urged to go into the field of educa- tion. There is at present a great need for teachers and although students cannot maior in education in undergraduate school, they may take courses in education which will enable them to teach. The College of Liberal Arts attempts to aid the student in developing his own individual interests and talents, pro- vide him with the specialized training for a chosen profession or vocation and prepare him for responsible American and world citizenship. 13
