To a member of the faculty who has been a valuable asset to Alfred State Tech
since joining the staff in nineteen hundred fifty-three, we dedicate this, the nineteen
hundred fifty-six STATONIAN.
Mr. James Leavy teaches freshman English and has been the advisor for our
student run newspaper-Tor-Echo, for three years. Mr. Leavy has also advised the
STATONIAN staff for two years and is in charge of all publicity for the school.
Mr. Leavy received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the School of Joumalism at
Syracuse University. Prior to attending Syracuse University, he was enrolled in the
liberal arts program at the University of Rochester. He has also served his term in
the United States Army.
We are proud to dedicate this yearbook to such an outstanding individual in
appreciation for his many efforts.

Charlatans
The Charlatans is Alfred State Tech's Drama
Club. It is the local Chapter of the National
Honorary Dramatic Fraternity, Delta Psi Omega.
This organization is open to all members of the
institute and offers experience in acting, costum-
ing, make-up, properties and lighting.
Each year the members produce three major
productions, three one-act plays and one Chil-
dren's Theater production. Some of the produc-
tions presented in the past include "The Glass
Menagerie," "All My Sons," "Mister Roberts,"
"An Enemy of the People," "The Male Animal"
and "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs." "Born
Yesterday" and "Death of a Salesmanv have been
presented thus far this year.
An annual Drama Festival is one of the major
projects of the Charlatans. The festival features
one- and three-act plays, modern dances and
reader's theater productions by high school, col-
lege, community and children's theater groups.
Some of the highlights of the nineteen hundred
fifty-live Third Annual Drama Festival include
the Mansfield, Pa. State Teacher's College pres-
entation of musical and dramatic experiments in
movement, an original one-act play entitled "Ap-
pointment at Noona' by the Rochester Catholic
Theater Group, a reader's theater production of
f'Mourning Becomes Electra" by Geneseo students
and Alfred State Tech's presentation of "An En-
emy of the People."
A Drama Demonstration Lecture Day is also
an annual event at Alfred. The lecturers present
demonstrations on techniques of theatrical pro-
ductions to high school and community theater
personnel. The Annual Modern Dance Confer-
ence olfers lectures and demonstrations on modern
dance as an art form.

Girls Sports
Physical education is one of the newest additions to
the curriculum for women at Alfred. The program was
indoctrined in nineteen fifty-four for freshmen, under
the direction of Miss Pauline Thomas.
During the year. the women receive instruction in
riding, archery, basketball, volleyball, badminton, tennis
and golf. An intramural program was organized for all
women on campus, consisting of basketball, volleyball,
softball and tennis.
Skilled teams for different sports are formed through-
out the year to participate in play days.
Horseback riding became spotlighted this year with
the organization of a riding club, known as the Hoof-
beats. An overnight trip was the highlight of its activi-
ties this year.
