DEIDICATIGN
PAUL B. ORVIS ,
In recognition of his great contributions to the past and present
students of our Institute, we, the Senior- Class of Alfred State Agri-
cultural and Technical Institute, humbly dedicate this, the first
edition of the Statonian, to our respected director, Mr. Paul B.
Orvis.
4
Since the beginning of his Directorship in 1937, Mr. Orvis'
accomplishments have been monumental. He is directly responsible
for all of the student organizations in our Institute. Under him the
student body has increased from 50 to 900. The faculty has in-
creased proportionally and under his leadership, several buildings
have been added to the facilities of Alfred State.

TOR ECHO
The idea for a student newspaper was so im-
pressed upon 'the students that in the spring of
1953, the student council elected Mary Fragomeni
as Editor-in-Chief to start the ball rolling for a
school newspaper.
With a staff of twenty-five members, the Tor-
Echo made its initial debut with its first edition
being printed on September 23.
The Tor-Echo is advised by James Leavy and
is under the supervision of the Editorial Board
which consists of four faculty members and four
students.

STATONION
The idea for an Ag-Tech yearbook was born
in the latter part of the 1953 quarter. Jim Flana-
gan and Frank Hammond, along with Professor
Bouck joined forces to bring this idea into reality.
Lou Lyman was appointed Editor-in-Chief, and
shortly after, a contract was signed with the Wil-
liam J. Keller yearbook Company of Buffalo.
A staff was then appointed, with Bruce Hyatt as
Literary Editor, Nancy Albee as Art Editor, Mary
Rumbold as Activities Editor, Anne MacAlpine
and JoAnn Wadsworth as Business Managers, and
Bay Wood as Photographer. As the school year
came to a close, the name "Statonian" was decided
upon.
By the time the 1953 Fall quarter had started,
the "Statonian" had its own full time faculty ad-
visor, Mr. James Leavy, a graduate of Syracuse
University. As the yearbook work swung into high
gear, two freshmen, Pat Trowbridge and Jerry
Aroneseno were appointed Layout Editor, and
Assistant Editor, respectively. Another freshman,
Frank Sander, was appointed assistant photogra-
pher. Mr. Grimm of Memory Studios, Hornell,
was contracted to do the photographing of the

seniors and faculty. On November 15 the first edi-
tion had been met. The "Statonian" was prac-
tically a reality.
It is, therefore, with a feeling of pride that we,
the Editors, present the first "Statonian,, to the
students of Alfred State Tech. We sincerely hope
that its publication will continue for many years
to come.

IDEIDICATION
On September 30, 1953 Governor Thomas E. Dewey arrived in
Alfred to dedicate the new State Tech Industrial Building. .
Governor Dewey's speech, which climaxed the dedication cere-
monies, was short and "off the cuff." Preceding Governor Dewey's
speech were speeches by Mr. Paul Orvis, Mr. L. Jowie, Mr. M.
Ellis Drake and Mr. Frederick F. Greenman.
The dedication of the new
building was held in connection
with Hornell Industries Day.
After the ceremonies the In-
dustrial Building was open to the
inspection of all interested people.

The business department displays for the Fall
Festival. These and many other colorful displays
were presented at the State Tech Gym.
This year Alfred State Tech sponsored its seventh annual Fall Festival which again
was a great success.
The students and faculty worked side-by-side preparing for the two day exhibits to
which area high schools, industrialists, and parents were invited.
Shops, laboratories, and classrooms were open to provide information concerning the
work in the various fields. Exhibits, displays, and demonstrations of farm machinery,
business, agriculture, industrial shops, science, and floriculture were open to the inspec-
tion of the visitors and guests.
The Fall Festival was formally opened with a variety show staged by the students.
The Harvest Ball, the big dance of the year for the socially minded State Tech student,
brought about a climax of the activities which closed the Fall Festival of 1953. While
Tommy Tucker and his great band provided the music, the climax of the evening was thc
crowning of Barbara Di Gangi, the Harvest Ball Queen of 1953.

at Alfred is the Winter Carnival which is
sponsored by the Alfred Outing Club.
With the snow sculptures,'bobslcd and
skiing races, barbeque, square dance, and
Sno-Ball little time hangs heavy on any-
one's hands.
The climax of the Carnival was the
crowning of the Sno-Ball Queen, Rhoda
Young. The snow sculpture, first prize in
the men's division, was taken by Theta
Gamma for the second year in a row.
Alpha Beta Chi took first place in the
women's division.

Despite a record of 6 wins and
10 losses, the basketball team lost
a good many close ones that could
have gone to either team. Sparked
by Skip liohe, Dave Morey, Ray
Stamm, Jim 1-larkins, Bob Dean,
and a strong second team, the
Slate Tech team, with a few more
breaks, could have had a close to
undefeated record for the season.

CROSS COUNTRY
Front Row: Study, LaFuente, Lyons, Lamphier, Grant,
Minch. Standing: Coach Getz, Palumbo, Donovan, Snyder,
Ross, Elman, Benjamin.
Once again Alfred State Tech had one of the strongest cross country teams among the
Junior Colleges of New York State. Sparked by Captain Manuel La F euntc, the cross
country team piled up an impressive record against all competition.
INDOOR TRACK
One of the lesser known teams at Alfred State this year was the indoor track team
coached by Mr. Getz. The team piled up an impressive record in its three intercollegiate
meets.
Front Row: Stady, LaMothe, Grant, Coach Getz. Back
Row: Minch, Sturzebecker, Lyons, Taylor.
Front Row: Balmas, Falk, LeBlanc, Gay. Back Row: Coach
McMahon, Mucher, Warnock, Sharp, McMaster, Coach
Thompson.
WRESTLING
The pride of Alfred this year
was the mighty State Tech wrest-
ling team. Undefeated during
their first year of intercollegiate
competition, the grapplers rolled
over all opposition with ease.
They beat such teams as R.I.T.,
St. Bonaventure, Oswego State,
Erie Tech, Orange County and
Farmingdale.
Standout of the team was J ohn
Le Blanc who won all seven of his
matches by pins. Other unde-
feated wrestlers were Walt Gay,
Bob Falk, Ralph Mucher, and
Carl McMasters. Rounding out
the eight man squad were Pete
Warnock, Dave Sharp, and Bar-
ney Balmas. Much of the credit
must go to Coach Charles Mc-
Mahon, a former star wrestler
with Alfred University.
GHEERLEADING
Cheering the basketball team
on to victory were the peppy,
hard-working cheerleaders of Al-
fred State Tech. Under the guid-
ance of Mrs. Schogoleff, the cheer-
leading squad consisted of Alice
Clements, Rhoda Young, Shirley
Long, Kay Baldwin, and Lyn
Johnson.
Alice Clements, Rhoda Young, Shirley Long, Lynn John-
son, Kay Baldwin.

ALMA
At the start of the 1953-54 school year,
Alfred State Tech was a college without
an Alma Mater. The Student Council ap-
pointed a committee to rectify this situ-
ation. This committee sponsored a contest
for an Alma Mater. Late in January, the
winner was announced. He was Richard
Fote of Olean, New York.

MATER
pa, thc Chorus, and the All-Campus band,
composed both the words and music of
this beautiful Alma Mater. His work re-
ceived high praise from Mr. Anthony
Cappadonia, head of the music depart-
ment at Alfred.
The student body has good reason to be
proud of Dick Fote and their new Alma
Dick, a member of Kappa Sigma Kap- Dick Fote Mater.
