A RESUME ON THE ATHLETIC FIELD Our knights started the football quests w 1th '1 bang thls year defeating Reyn olds RNIA, and Stronghurst easlly under the dxrectwon of our new Coach Wayne Sturm and Assistant Loach Burt Clark Then c mme our old rlval Aledo, and for the lxrst time In over ten years the Cardmals w hlpped them The game, played at Aledo wlth the score ending 20 to 0 ID our favor g lve the Alexls fans the sweetest v1c'tory In years We ran our vlctory strlng lnto flve games by defeating Burlmgton, but then dls ister struck The Cardlnals suffered a heart breaklng defeat from Abmgdon here ln Alexls before 1 100 screaming fans After leadlng the Commandoes 14 to 7 for three quarters we saw our le rd narrowed to one polnt wlth two l'l'llIlLltSS left ln the game and then snatched aw ay from us lll the last seconds when Abingdon completed 1 fourth down pass for a touchdown thereby wmnnng the game 20 to 14 Our team was so crushed that 1t dld not recover by the next week and we lost to Rosevnlle 20 to 7 but the followmg week we managed to tle the sharp ROVA club 20 to 20 In the last lgame of the season we battled Knoxvllle to a tle ln flrst half but 'lfter losung several players through mjurles we were overcome by the powerful Blue Bullets Thus we ended the season wxth a record of 5 wlns, 3 losses md 1 tle There were no great stars on our te lm whlch was a well balanced umt, but we dxd have such standouts ws Duck Lafferty at end George NlcConnell at guard, along wlth Jlm O11n, Don Gordon, lvan Rly and Dave Powell ln the backfleld Jlm Ol n, George NlcConnell and IJ ck Laiferty were chosen on the Lnttle Sw All Star lst team, whlle Don Gordon md Dave Powell recenved honorable mentxon Soon xfter the football season the Lxttle Six Cross Country meet was held here m Alexns and our star mllex, Dave Powell led our team to victory This mcxdent ally, was the last of the l lttle SIX Cross Country meets The Cardlnal hardwood te lm had nts best season m ye urs, wlnnmg 4 and los m,g 12 Although we had off nlghts we strll won more than our share of games The hlghest score was against Bnggsvllle whcm we defeated 82 to 60 but the greatest victory of all was over Abmgdon After losmg our flrst encounter with them, .ve Journeyed to Abmgdon md handed our former coach s team a 63 to 51 setback The hlghest scorer ol the season was Dxck Laflertv wlth 487 pomts followed by Dxck Staggs wlth 275 whllfe Iv an Ray played magmflcent defense and .lxm Olm and Dave Powell nlso turned lll credztable performances llthough track season ns just stlrtlng as the annual goes to prxnt ,we are look mg forward to cl fme year The returning l-ettermen are Dave Powell, Ivan Ray .hm Olm llon Gordon Duck Lalferty Jolm Axcell John Mcllonnell, George Mc Connell Stan Tyrrell md Dave Walght Words cannot tell how grateful we are to our able co lches, Wayne Sturm and Burt Clark, for their wonderful assrstance ln bunldlng our teams Thelr knowledge of sports md the tactlcs involved w lS one of the blg reasons w hy Alexls had suc cessful team thxs year 65.. js I P- ll .-...ii - V Y.
