Bound between these covers are recorded in words and pictures the organizations and events which go to make up the high school we all wish to remember. In the pages that follow, are glimpses of class room activities, athletics, mu- sic, parties, and everyday school life. The game wasn't as lop-sided as the score indicates. Alexandria outrushed Benson in yardage by gaining 280 yards to Benson's 242. The main factor in the loss was costly fumbles and a poor pass defense. Roger Anderson led the Alexandria forward wall, turning in some excellent running. CARDS WIN 1st R. R. CONFERENCE VICTORY Showing a big imporvement over the first game, Alexandria defeated the Moorhead Spuds 6-0, for the first victory of the season on the new gridiron at the Alexandria ball park. A fumble on the Spuds 12 yd. line set up the game winning touchdown early in the 2nd quarter. Bob Nicolaus later scored from the 1 yd line to give Alexandria the only score of the ball game. Despite the wet field, R. Anderson, T. Annis, and B. Nicolaus turned in some excellent running as Polesak, connected on some good passing. WELLMAR TRIPS CARDS 12-6 A heavy Wilmar football tean capitalizing on several breaks, one of which produced a touchdown on a fluke pass completion, defeated the somewhat smaller Cards from Alexandria. Alexandria lead early in the 1st quarter when Warren Wollin intercepted a?pass and ran 88 yds to paydirt, Willman, however, came right back to score on a series of plays to tie the score 6-6. FOOTBALL HIGHLIGHTS In the last play of the 1st half, a Willmar pass was deflected by an Alexandria defenseman into the air and picked up by a vVillmanBack who scooted across the goal line to give Wilmar a 12-6 lead. Despite several breaks in the 2nd half, Alexandria couldn't get the all important yardage to score Pole- sak again led a good night in connecting on 5 ol 9 passes. CARDS SINK WADENA 14-6 Quarterback Fred Polesak's excellent passing led Ale- xandria to it's second victory of the season. Alexan- dria went ahead 7-0 early in the 2nd quarter as Cap- tain A. Anderson recovered a fumble on the Wadena 14 yd. line and Fred Polesak carried it over from the 1 yd. line. B. Nicolaus scored the p.a.t. on a pitch- out. Early in the 2nd half, Alexandria scored from a 12 yd. pass combination from Polesak to Kjos for a touchdown, and a pass to Lommen gave the Cards a commanding 14-0 lead. Wadena came back to score, but the Cards held them in check the rest of the game. Annis led the Alexandria forward wall turning in sev- eral long gains. CARDS TROUNCH COWBOYS 27-6 Alexandria scored once in each quarter as they lived up to their homecoming slogan to Wreck Breck . The victory gave the Cards their 3rd win of the sea- son and their 2nd win in conference play. Nicolaus scored in the first quarter and Anms converted to give the Cards a 7-0 lead. Breckenridge came back, how- ever, and scored just at the end of the half to cut the margin 13-6. The Cards came back in the 3rd quar- ter as Nicolaus scored to give Alexandria a 20-6 commanding lead Charley McDonald intercepted a pass in the last quarter to insure a Cardinal victory. Roger Anderson, Annis, Nicolaus and Charles Mc- Donald turned in several fine runs. CARDS TROUNCE GLENWOOD 27-7 The Cards played one of their best games of the year in defeating the Glenwood Lakers 27-7. In the open- ing quarter, Nicholaus scored on a 14 yd. run to give the Cards a 13-0 lead at the half. Glenwood came back to score in the third quarter to cut the margin to 13-7. In the final quarter, Roger Anderson scored on a 3-yd. plunge. Roger Anderson again scored the last touchdown of the game and Adrian Anderson kicked the extra point as the Cards went on to win their fourth game of the year, 27-0 FERGUS RALLY DEFEATS CARDS The Fergus Falls Otters came back from a 14-7 first half deficit to defeat the Alexandria Cardinals 34-14. The Otters ranked 7th in the state, won the confer- ence championship, and their 19th game in a row. More than 3,000 fans watched as the Otters recovered an Alexandria fumble on their own 3 yd. line and came back to score to give them a 7-0 lead. Alex- andria took the ball on the Otter 30 and Polesak scored on a 2 yd. plunge. Captain Anderson kicked the extra point. Late in the second period, Annis in- tercepted a pass and ran 44 yds for a touchdown. A- gain A. Anderson kicked the P.A.T. to give Alexan- dria a 14-7 lead at half time. Fergus was to much for the Cards, in the 2nd half, as their speedy backs made consistent gains to put a damper on Alexan- dria's hopes for a conference championship DETROIT LAKES TRIPS CARDS 12-6 In the season finale, Alexandria beat Detroit Lakes 12-6 to give them a 3-way tie for 2nd place in the conference. The Lakers scored first to take the lead, and a few minutes later Alexandria scored after a 60- yard run by R. Anderson to set up a touchdown on a pass from Polesak to Backhaus to tie the score 6-6 at half-time. The Lakers came back to score in the 3rd quarter and were never in real trouble after that. Thus Alexandria ended their season winning 4 and losing 4 At the annual football banquet, at the end of the sea- son, Doug Backhaus, Wendell Kjos, and Jack Iverson were elected tri captains for the coming season Cap- tain Adriar Anderson placed on the R.R. Conference All-star team, and received honorable mention on the Minneapolis Sunday Tribune All-State Team. A-TEAM BASKETBALL STANDING: B. Grove, D. Yohnke, J. Brenden, J. Dahlager, D. Reynolds, A. We all took an active part and elected Miss Carolyn Christiansen as our homecoming attendant. In November under the direction of Mr. Halvorson we presented our first class play, HCharley's Aunt . It was a tremendous success. Our major accomplishment this past year was planning and sponsoring the Junior-Senior Prom. Many long hours were spent in decorating, and the results were certainly worth the time. It doesn't seem possible, but we will soon be Seniors and in our last year of high school. We are looking forward to our last year with all its fun, but the wonderful memories of our Junior year will never be forgotten. FIRST ROW, Left to right: K. Berglin, S. Barten, L. Bruxvoort, S. SENIORS Graduation has come at last, and we will never again roam the halls as a student of Alex High and leave our homework for a never tomorrow. We Seniors have many recollections that linger with us and always will remain with us. Looking back we see ourselves as freshmen. We were really proud because we were now leaders in the Junior High and then to have our own paper, the Variety. Each one of us can remember when we sat in the auditorium and tried to yell S-O-P-H-O-M-O-R-E-S! This was the year that we enjoyed dances and parties among these were the Christmas Dance and the Sadie Hawkins Dance. Then in our Junior year we became more active in sports and dramatics. We were very proud of our class-play Ladies of the Jury.” on which we worked very hard. We all remember the Junior-Senior Prom with April in Paris'1 as our theme. We started our Senior year with our class pictures taken in August. We received our class rings with much en- thusiasm and then began work on this Alexian. Our Homecoming was a real success with Queen Agnes Johnson reigning over the festivities. Under the capable leadership of Mr. Ording. our class advisor, we were kept busy. The Christmas concert and class play were a success. Before we knew it we were exchanging pictures and the spring ac- tivities were on the way. This time we were guests of the juniors at the prom. The Senior Skip Day and the Senior Banquet were among the highlights in our Senior year. Then came Honor Day, Baccalaureate, and Graduation to end our school days at A.H.S. 66 AALBERG, DICK ANDERSON, ADRIAN ANDERSON, DAVID ANDERSON, PATRICIA ANDERSON, RICHARD ANDERSON, VERDE ANNIS, THOMAS BACHMAN, GENE BACKLIN, RUTH ANN BAKKE, RODNEY BARROS, THOMAS RARSNESS, WANDA 67 BERGNER, PALMER BETTERMAN, WILLIAM BETTS, GARY BEULKE.
