Hmm!l The Downbeat' Plink-Plank-Plunk! Just checkin'! Girls — this is chemistry! Parlez-vous francais? Can’t they find the answer? Future carpenter? Don’t they look studious? Munch time at Connie’s Place! Oomph! Must have been the ‘Girls’ Day! I use Halo — ! Short snort? No, long blow! Publicity stunt — Ha! Tangled up, Genius? Is this choir?? Stop! Look! Smile! The following were elected to lead this year' Senior class: Co-presi- dents, Dennis Sherman and Conrad Muzik; Secretary-treasurer, Evelyn Sarvie; Vice-president, Charles Neller. Seniors! We can hardly believe that just yesterday, it seems, we were plan- ning the junior high spring party, the winter party, and the carnival under our president, Bill Tobaben. Ah, yes, we also remember the junior high paper, the Variety, and its memories of work. Sophomores, — that was hard to spell then, wasn’t it? Now we needed no special invitation to attend the senior high auditorium periods or the dances. Under our president, Conrad Muzik, we very successfully sponsored our first big dance, the Christmas Dance, with the theme,‘‘Mistletoe Magic”. We also put on the annual Sadie Hawkins Dance. As Juniors we again elected into office Bill Tobaben as our class president. This was the year of our first class play which was ‘‘A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court.” We again put on the Sadie Hawkins Dance. Also, under the excellent guidance of our advisor, Mr. V. Clair Morrison, we sponsored a very successful Junior-Senior Prom and Spring Party with the themes “Twilight Serenade” and the “Maypole”, respectively. The Senior year brought into office co-presidents, Dennis Sherman and Conrad Muzik, which had never happened before in the history of our school. This year started early as our pictures were taken in August. Under the efficient guidance of Mr. Ted Ording, our advisor, we were very busy. Amond our activities were the Alex High Times, the Alexian, Homecoming, and the class play. Christmas came too soon with the band and choir concerts. The exchanging of pictures and calling cards brought us closer to the Prom, the Banquet, Honor Night, and Bac- calaureate. Our final good-bye to Alex High came with Commencement. These wonderful memories of Alex High will long be remembered and renewed with return visits. 14 AFFELDT, ARDYS Ambition: To join the navy and go to Paris. Both of the coaches, Tom Connor and Steve Smilanich, figured that it would be a good year if the team would win more than half of their games. Records show the Cardinals won five, tied one, and dropped two games. Probably the game the team will always remember is the one played on the night of September 25 when the smaller Cardinals downed Willmar 13-12. There were two disappointments, however. The two defeats of the season were to the two highly ranked teams of Detroit Lakes (rated sec- ond in the state) and Melrose (rated sixteenth in the state). Letters were awarded to ends: Harold Hayer, Dell Hogy, Roger Ogren, Jack Seitz, and Dick Seal; tackles: Romaine Thornton, Chuck Neller, and Jack Hammar; guards: Jack Bundy, Tom Osterberg, Gary Stocker, and Roger Granlund; centers: Jim Reese and Jerry Annis; backs: Ray Hill, Bob Flaig, Bill Tobaben, Vern Duenow, Dennis Erickson, Lowell Goodrich, and Carl Schu- macher. At the annual football banquet held after the completion of the season. Bob Flaig and Gary Stocker were named as co-captains for 1954. Jim Reese and Bill Tobaben were given honorable mention for the Minneapolis Sunday Tri- bune all-state team. 71 Charles Neller 72 R. Thorton, Tackle R. Granlund, Guard L. Goodrich, Back D. Another fine won and lost record was chalked up by the Alexandria Cardinals during the past regular basketball season. The Cardinals ended with a 14 6 record and the six teams that beat the Cardinals all played fine ball to do so. Fortunately, three of the defeats were revenged when the Cardinals split with Sauk Centre, Melrose, and Glenwood. The Cardinals mentor, Tom Connor, had a group of six lettermen back from his 1952-53 team in Captain Chuck Neller, Bill Tobaben, Dan Thompson, Vern Duenow, Ray Hill, and Ron Ander- son. The Range trip was one of the big events of the year as the Cardinals upset a good Chisholm team and the next night stopped Coach Connor's home town of Gilbert by seven points. 'Diafoict 7 Mn ccuttettt Brandon, Bertha, and Glenwood all fell victims to the Alexandria Cardinals as they marched to their first District 22 championship since 1950. Brandon fell the first night at Melrose, 73-27, Bertha was downed, 65-43, and the final night Alexandria showed every indication that they de- served the championship when they stopped a good Glenwood team, 54-45. Both Brandon and Bertha made it rough for the Cardinals during the first quarter but then the Cardinal shots started to go in and the reserves had the opportunity to play in both games. Against Glenwood it was five boys all the way. They performed as a team and beat Glen- wood after trailing 9-7 at the end of the first quarter.
