7 e 195t Hexicut Published by THE CLASS OF 1951 CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL ALEXANDRIA, MINNESOTA I I I I I I We, the Senior Class of 1951, dedicate this “Alex- ian” to the memory of our former classmate, Raymond Wollin, who was killed in an accident in 1946. We remember Raymond as a person who was very active in school and church work. He was a first-class boy scout and participated in intramural basketball, Junior High football and school patrol. We truly feel that Raymond was a great asset to our school. 0?a%eova%ct The 1951 Alexian relates the story of that part of our life spent in Central High School, Alexandria, Minnesota. Through the years this annual will preserve the memories of experiences had and acquaintances made. It will also be a re- minder of the accomplishments of graduating seniors. In future years these everyday events will be forgotten, but as we turn through the pages of this yearbook, they will all be brought to memory again. A team rated as an underdog before the season, the Cardinals caught a spark of spirit in battling unbeaten Fergus halls, nearly to a standstill in the opening tussle. After winning three of the following five games, Alexandria came up with its best game of the season, surprising heavily fa- vored and unbeaten Park Rapids, 25-12. The Cardinals hit the low point of the season the following week when they dropped Frink, Soderholm, Selling, Kendall, Torrey, Gilbertson, Rooney, Hanson. ACROSS: Burros, Assistant Coach Smilanich, Captain Krohnfeldt, Coach Connor, Lundstrom. a 6-0 contest to the underdog, Melrose. Then came the thrilling climax to the season against Morris. Two unofficial all-conference teams were picked. Jerry Krohnfeldt, quarterback and captain, and Dennis Gilbertson, halfback, were placed on both teams. Bob Kendall, end, and Don Ruhl, guard, were also picked on one team. Alex fans should be well pleased with the capable work of coaches, Tom Connor and Steve Smilanich, in the rebuilding of the Alexandria football team. 47 CAPTAIN JERRY KROHNFELDT HOLGER HANSON THOMAS SOLBERG BURDELL KIETZMANN HARRY BEDMAN A k 1 v r 4 1 v GEORGE TORREY ROBERT ALLGUIRE DEAN BIRCHER DENNIS GILBERTSON • „ f Squad FRONT ROW, left to right: D. Senca% .ettenmea CAPTAIN BUD HANSON ‘Seu et all One week after the football season was completed, nearly eighty boys turned out for basketball. Although most of the 1949-50 team had graduated, the year began with a lot of po- tential talent. After dropping the first game to Minneapolis Southwest, Alexandria pro- ceeded to win the next four games in a row before losing to a tough Wahpeton five. Throughout the season, the Cardinals won fourteen games while losing six. The fourteen wins included victories over all the powers of District 22 except the strong Mel- rose quintet. Melrose defeated Alexandria twice during the regular season, once by the score of 39-38. As tournament time rolls around, Melrose and Alexandria are favorites to battle it out for the district championship. With only three seniors on this year’s squad, the outlook for next year’s team is very bright. The Cardinal “B’s” proved they will furnish much to the future Alexandria team by winning ten games while losing six. The “B” team, with freshmen playing the greater portion of the time, made an excellent show- ing against teams their own size and age. Furnishing the much lacking height on the “A” team, will be the rangy sophomores of the “B’s.” 51 Cheerleaders for the 1950—SI season are, LEFT TO RIGHT: Coleen Morical, Irma Smith, Lorraine Schoenick, Ronald Hanson, Helen Kngland, and Karen Michaelson. Besides leading yells at every game, along with the “B” squad, they took charge of all pep meetings and kept school spirit at an all time high. ?(t HZmcviaC 'Sa et alC After a one year lapse, intramural basket- ball made a very successful comeback in Alexandria. Ten teams were formed with membership being limited to boys from the freshman to the senior classes who ate their lunches at the schoolhouse. About seventy boys participated in the sport — one of the largest turnouts in any sport. At the end of the regular schedule, a tournament, similar to the district basketball tournament, was held to determine the intra- mural champions. Attendance, which was very low at the beginning, rose steadily throughout the sea- son, until fifty or more students witnessed each contest. 7lICLC Due to an extremely late start to track drills, necessitated by the adverse weather conditions, the Alexandria track scpiad took fart in only two meets. Despite the serious ack of preparedness, Alexandria managed to place in five events at the District 22 meet. Danny Grandpre placed second in the 220- yard dash and third in the 100-yard dash. Kenny Proffitt was second in the 440-yard run and Bob Kendall gained fourth place in the pole vaulting event. The half-mile relay team, consisting of Danny Grandpre, Mickey Herzog, Bob Allguire, and Don Clarey, placed third in that event. As a team Alexandria was sixth in the district with Melrose gaining the championship. Danny Grandpre and Kenny Proffitt en- tered Region Six competition but neither placed. Letter winners of last year’s track team were Danny Grandpre, Kenny Proffitt, Mickey Herzog, Bob Kendall, Don Clarey, and Bob Allguire. With better weather permitting more practice, this year’s squad can look for a more successful season. 54 S sue6-ciCl Because of a late spring, the Alexandria baseball team completed its season after only six games. The final contest was a defeat by the Melrose Dutchmen in the Dis- trict 22 semifinals by the score of 3-0. Starting the season in grand fashion, the highly rated Cardinals whipped Melrose twice in succession and went on to beat Long Prairie before being defeated. The same Melrose team handed Alex its final defeat of Scores Melrose Melrose Long Prairie Melrose Swan ville Melrose the season in the Lake Region Conference playoffs. In the first round of the district playoff, Alex downed Swanville 5-3. The Melrose team «evened the season’s series by shutting out the Cardinals in the second round 3-0. Due to the fine showing of the Junior Legion Team, the outlook for this season is again bright. Alex Opp. 12 4 2 1 3 1 1 3 5 3 0 3 The 1950 golf schedule was short-lived due to the elimination of the Alexandria team in the district trials at Glenwood. The rough and hilly terrain of the Glenwood course proved extremely hazardous to all but the Glenwood crew, as they walked off with first place honors. Alexandria finished in second place, followed by Sauk Centre and Long Prairie respectively. Eddie Tanquist, Roger Anderson, Tommy Sol berg, Burdell Kietzmann, and James Fitz- gerald comprised the Alexandria team. With three returning lettermen, there is a favorable outlook for the 1951 contest. 55 RETURNING LETTER MEN - Left to right: Rurdell Kietzmann, Tommy Solberg, Jimmy Fitzgerald.
