% I N) i the 1950 aLexian Published by The Class of 1950 Central High School Alexandria, Minnesota DEDICATION The class of 1950 respectfully dedicates its Alexian to Mr. Gordon Melby, who has diligently served Alexandria High School for 26 years, spending much extra time and energy in preparing the most effective class methods, that he might give his students the best training possible. - 4 - ALEXIAN STAFF Editor—Marlene Hustad Assistant Editor—Dan Grandpre Business Manager—Roger Anderson Advertising—Margaret Flaig Circulation—Audrey Stenson Sports Editor—Neil Ostlund Senior Editor—Cordelia Kuhn Music Editor—Audrey Johnson Dramatics—Marlene Peterson Classes—June Soberg Departments—Pat Barthelemy Captions—Helen Forsgren Features—Yvonne Sonnen Photography—Bob Knarreborg Lay Out—Barbara Pauly FOREWORD The 1950 Alexian” is the story of the 1949-1950 school year at Central High School, Alexandria, Minnesota. In the pages that follow, there are recorded in words and pictures the organizations and events which go to make up the high school we all wish to remember. It is the purpose of this book to serve as a storehouse of memories against the time when the things we now take for grant- ed from day to day will escape us. - 5 - TABLE OF CONTENTS Administration ---------- 7 Seniors - -- -- -- -- -- 13 Underclassmen - -- -- -- -- - 31 Athletics ----------- 41 Music - -- -- -- -- -- Dramatics - -- -- -- -- - 63 Activities - -- -- -- -- - 67 Scraps of Snaps - -- -- -- -- 81 . 6 - - L uoiavaisiimuQv Mr. Hafdal Although Mr. Arthur Hafdal has served as superintendent for only one year, his competent, business-like manner has won much respect for him and achieved high respect for the school. Mr. Clifford Rykken, whose efficient lead- ership has been such an inspiration, has served the school for the past twenty-two years as teacher and administrator. Mr. George Anderson, junior high princi- pal, organized the junior high student council and has acted as adviser to that organization for the past year. - 8 - Upper left, left to right: G. Melby, K. Torgerson, H. Munson. Lower left, left to right: J. Hokanson, V. Halvorson, J. Anglin. Upper right, left to right: M. Libera, E. Pirkl. Lower right, left to right: C. Morrison, D. Foss, V Combs, T. Ording. Everything from the simple structure of the amoeba to the complicated structure of the atom is explained by the capable science, biolo- gy, physics, and chemistry teachers. The x's and y's and the why's and wherefore's are all answered by the math instructors. They also try to teach their pupils the difference be- tween a quadrilateral and a triangle. Could you be happy taking dictation and typing all day? If you cannot do it happily, the com- mercial department will help you do it accu- rately, at least. When a student graduates, he has a knowledge of Queen Elizabeth, Lincoln, Lewis, Waterloo, Valley Forge, and many other persons, places, and problems. He acquires this immense store of knowledge from the history and social de- partments. - 9 i Upper left, left to right: I. Continenza, A. Hapke, V. DiNino, O. Hanson, Seated: L. Berge. Lower left, left to right: A. Clauson, M. Skalbeck, E. Nelson, D. Quammen, D. Schwanke. MUSIC The instructors and directors in our music de- partment spend many hours teaching their pupils to Say It With Music. ENGLISH One of the most practical courses in our cur- riculum is English, and a very capable staff turns out a set of English sharks each year. Upper right, left to right: S. Floyd, A. Unseth. Lower right, left to right: T. Connor, S. Smilanich, M. Ludwig, N. Johnson, M. Dixon. HOME ECONOMICS The home economics department teaches, Ev- ery girl must keep her husband and children fed and clothed. In between classes, the teachers must also plan the hot lunch menus. PHYSICAL EDUCATION The health and physical fitness of the students are the main concern of the physical education and the school health departments. - 10 - Upper left: left to right: C. Amundson, D. Olson, R. Hanson. Lower left, left to right: M. Barry, A. Wold. SHOP The handling of tools, mechanical drawing, and wood-working are taught by the industrial arts teachers. LIBRARY Miss Margaret Barry and Miss Laurane Wold advise the Library Board, order books and mag- azines, and help students find the material they need. This year they also have an extra task because of the Teen-Age Book Club. Upper right: V. Maack. Lower right, seated: B. Sonstegard, A. Paciotti, D. Benson. Standing: C. Hemming, R. Ahlfors, A. Mr. Vernon Maack supervises those who work part-time under this program. AGRICULTURE Because the importance of agriculture is increasing, the staff of the agriculture depart- ment is also increasing. Besides the classes dur- ing the day, these teachers also have night classes for local farmers. COOKS — Upper Left: Mrs. Jerome, Mrs. Timm, Mrs. Neller. CUSTODIANS — Upper Right: H. Mullen, C. Kuhn SENIOR CLASS The class of 1950 chose as their officers, Bud Anderson, president; Cordelia Kuhn, vice presi- dent; and Margaret Flaig, secretary-treasurer. Mr. Ted Ording capably advised the class in its various projects. Baby Sitter, a three-act comedy, was the play presented in their junior year. Miss Catherine Woodington was the director. A fitting climax for a busy year was sponsoring of the Junior-Senior Prom. It was held at the Country Club, with the music of Vern -Wellington. The senior class play was One Foot in Heaven. Mrs. Dorothy Schwanke was the director. When they were measured for caps and gowns, they first realized that they would miss school. Spring brought the exchange of pictures and calling cards. The year was brought to an end with Honor Day, Baccalaureate, the Senior Banquet, and finally Commencement. - 14 - AFFELDT. WANDA ALCOTT, DONALD F. F. A. 3. 4 ALDOUS. George Torrey was chosen president; Jerry Krohnfeldt, vice president; and Florence Iverson, secretary-treasurer. Because of a clever theme, Cardinals on Top, and much hard work, the juniors won first place with their float in the annual homecoming parade. Among their achievements were the Sadie Hawkins Dance and the class play, Mother Was a Freshman. The project that required the most work and gave the most satisfaction was the junior- senior prom. It was held on May 5, and Jimmy Thomas' orchestra provided the music. - 32 - Left to right, Row 1: D. Dierkhising, L. Behrens, J. Clark, D. Angen, N. Brueske, A. Botzet, A. Bolstad, J. Brouns. D. They were: Deanna Thompson, president; Carol Flaig, vice president; and Janice Reynolds, secretary-treasurer. (Do you suppose this is some indica- tion of the newly-gained acceptance of women in politics?) The sophomores can be proud of the Christmas Dance which they sponsored. Blue and silver decorations were used to carry out the theme of Stardust. Robert Kendall and Dwayne Soderholm were elected representatives to the newly organized Youth Council. - 35 - t Left to right, Row 1: C. Bartholomew, B. BJorklund, A. Baker, J. Brede, M. Anderson, S. FOOTBALL Alexandria's 1949-1950 edition of football teams came up with the best record acquired by a gridiron representative of this school in many years. The students of the school and the people of this town have craved a successful season for a long time, and the team finally satisfied their craving. Led by Captain Harold Johnson and All-Conference John Gustafson, the team piled up five wins against two losses while scoring I 10 points to the opponents' 76. This year's squad was the first in a long time to: win more games than they lost, earn a first division berth in the Central Ten standings, beat Glenwood, and lick Bcmidji. That is quite a record for a team that started the season with but six lettermen. It shows the value of a little spirit, determina- tion, and some good sound coaching. While handing out bouquets to the varsity, let's pass a few flowers to the B team and to the undefeated junior high squad. The personnel of these two will bolster our teams for the years to come and will assure more successful season. The reputation returned to Alex football by this team speaks for itself. - 42 - Left to right, Line: H. Hanson, E. Tessmer, H. Johnson, E. Tanquist, D. Grandpre, N. Ostlund, P. Platto. Backfield: J. They ended the season with twenty-four wins against nine losses, two of these losses com- ing in the state tournament held in Williams Arena. Some of the better teams Alex played this year were: Melrose and Sauk Centre, both of whom were defeated three times by the Cardinals, and Long Prairie, who was defeated by Alex in the dis- trict finals. We won one and lost one against Fergus Falls and Brainerd, defeating Brainerd where it really counted—in the regional tournament. Wadena defeated Alex twice and Minneapolis Central defeated them in the third game of the season. Bemidji defeated the Cardinals twice, one of these defeats coming in the consolation championship at the state tournament. -45- REGIONAL This year's team just about fulfilled the fondest dreams of any optomistic sports fan by winning the district and regional and entering the state tournament. This year’s team is the first Alex team to go to the state tournament since 1943. The Cardinals had one of the toughest district and regional tournaments that Alex has ever faced. In the first game of the district, Alex defeated Melrose for the third time this season. In the second game Alexandria defeated Sauk Centre for the third time this year. In the championship game, Alexandria came from behind to defeat Long Prairie for the title. The regional tournament was held in the North Dakota State College Field House in Fargo, North Dakota. In the first game Alex defeated a highly favored Brainerd quintet, 40-35, while Whea- ton was trouncing a favored Fergus Falls team. Alex then went on to beat Wheaton by 10 points for the regional championship. At the state tournament the Cardinals ran into a little first round tough luck by drawing this year's state champs, Duluth Central. In the consolation play, Alex defeated Mankato 41-38 and were defeated by Bemidji, 31-39. The climax came when Alexandria's star forward, Dennis Bergner, was named to the All-State team. Domek THE B TEAM The B team this year was the tallest in history, averaging close to six feet. For this reason, if they improve as expected, Alexandria fans can look forward to some good basketball in a couple of years. They had a fairly successful season, winning twelve games and losing only six. This year's B team was made up of eight freshmen and five sophomores. Five of these boys also dressed for the A games and played a little in these games. Together with the returning lettermen from this year's A squad, these boys should make up a pretty fair basketball team and be a strong contender for the District and Region crowns in 1950-51. TRACK Alexandria had a very successful track team in 1949. Under the coaching of Steve Smilanich they made a good showing at all of the track meets. Alexandria scored 32 points at the St. John’s Invitational track meet for third place. Brouns and Callaghan made firsts in the mile run and the discus, respectively. They took third at the conference meet with 36% points. Brouns won the mile again and Gilmore made a first in the 220 yard dash. Alexandria won the district meet with 49 points as Hill took first in the high hurdles, Gilbertson tied for first in the high jump, and the relay team also took first place. In the regional, Alexandria scored 16 points for third place. The relay team placed first in this meet, too. B. Callaghan, L. Gilmore, A. Borchert, P. Sanvik. and D. Engstrom entered the state meet, but none of them placed. The lettermen of the 1949 squad were P. Sanvik, L. Gilmore. A. Borchert, W. Anderson, D. Engstrom, C. Hibbard, A. Brouns, J. Hill. K. Proffitt, D. Gilbertson, B. Kendall, B. Callaghan and W. Whittaker. Most of the lettermen graduated, leaving a small number which returned to support the 1950 squad. Smith CHEERLEADERS We should have fifteen cheers for the cheerleaders because they really have done a grand job of leading the student body this year. Our A squad consisted of June Soberg, Cordelia Kuhn, Irma Smith, Marlene Johnson and Earl Bartholomew. Besides leading the yells at every game, they took charge of all pep meetings. They introduced the song, Men of Might, which was later heard at all the games. The B squad should also be given credit for their good job. Those on the B squad were Karen Michaelson, Delores Englund, Colleen Morical, Lorraine Schoeneck and Ronnie Hanson. They too, wore red and white uniforms. They will be excellent for next year's A squad. B CHEERLEADERS C. Morical, H. Englund, R. Hanson K. Michaelson, L. Schoeneck Will he make it? Careful! - 53 - Your skin is showing. Hey, Legs! CHOIR On the first day of school, over one-hundred singers eager to blend their voices crowded into the choir room. Then Miss Lukris Berge, the choir director, selected the eighty-five voices she needed. The choir presented their first choral arrangements for a radio program shortly before Christ- mas. One of the many songs the choir sang was Russian Picnic, the top hit among the choir members. The A Capella choir and the junior choir presented a Christmas concert on December 18. The girls' octette, triple trio, boys' quartette, and the Madrigal group took part in either the Christmas concert or the Christmas program presented for the Euterpean Club. On April 22, the choir made a journey to Glenwood for the annual Music Festival. The choir sang O Sing for the festival. The sympathizers and the boys' ensemble added spice to Hilarities with their novel songs. When the seniors ended their high school career, the choir ended its eventful year by singing for the Baccalaureate and Commencement services. -58- Left to right. Row 1: B. Vacek, R. Chan, M. During the fall we worked very hard to present a half-hour radio program. On December 15, the choir gave its annual Christmas concert. A shepherd scene was part of our concert. Our soloists were Mary Lou Danielson, Patty Barthelemy, and Roger Aga. The choir sang the Cherubim Song at the spring festival at Glenwood. - 59 - DOUBLE-REED SECTION AND FLUTES R. Peterson, S. ALEXI AN Almost immediately after the 1950 Alexian staff was organized, work on the yearbook began. Although it was hard to get down to concentrated work at first, the staff at last began to have something to build on. Bob Knarreborg started taking the scheduled pictures. The advertising solicitors commenced with raising finances while the circulation staff accepted subscriptions. Then the dif- ferent departments wrote their articles and the feature editors advertised for snaps. After the work was once begun, the staff progressed more rapidly. Meetings were held Thursday nights, and at these much of the actual work was done. Cartoons were drawn by Joan Hockett, and Karen Elness drew the division pages. - 68 - Row 1: J. Johnson, M. ALEX HIGH TIMES The Alex High Times staff has been kept very busy this year improving the school newspaper and in striv- ing to put it out at regular intervals. Miss Virginia Combs served very efficiently as advisor to the staff and also as its instructor in journalism, although no regular class time was provided for the teaching of this subject. The High Times started the school year by holding an election which determined the new assistant editors, who next year will take over the positions vacated by senior editors. This year's chief editors are: Patricia Martin, editor-in-chief: Marlene Hustad. front page editor: Cordelia Kuhn, feature editor; Roger Anderson, sports editor; Margaret Flaig, exchange editor; Jean Johnson, chief ad solicitor; and June Soberg, business manager. Also of immeasurable value to the staff was Bob Knarreborg, photographer. In the fall nine of the staff members attended a state-wide press conference held at the University of Min- nesota. They heard speakers, many of whom are prominent leaders in journalism, and thus they gained a better idea of just how a good school paper should be run. However, the highlight of the year took place in November when three of the staff members, with Miss Combs, traveled to Chicago where they attended a National Press Convention, and met with hundreds of other members of the National Scholastic Press Association. Suggestions were contributed by papers from all over the country, in discussions and lectures, led by famous newspaper men and women. Here, too, original and better ideas were gained for the advancement and improvement of our paper, and the students returned home eager to put their newly acquired information to use. It was a great moment for the Alex High Times when it was granted the Quill and Scroll Charter. The Quill and Scroll is an international honorary society for high school journalists, and one of the foremost requirements for eligibility is publishing a school paper that fulfills the high standards of the society's executive council. It was the first time since 1933 that a charter had been granted to the Alex High Times staff, and so it is little wonder that the staff felt so honored. Cooperation is one of the utmost essentials in the publishing of any newspaper, and without the help of each and every staff member, as well as the printers, the High Times could not have carried on as well as it did. Many tedious hours were spent writing, copy-reading, proof-reading, headlining, working with dummy copy, and finally publication; and although much is yet to be learned, the staff feels that they have accomplished a great deal this year towards future betterment of the Alex High Times. - 70 - Left to right, Row 1: D. STUDENT COUNCIL The student council is a student government organization composed of home room representatives and the vice presidents of each class. Meetings were held every Tuesday and school problems were discussed. It also checked health and dental cards, took charge of charity drives, spent three meet- ings studying parliamentary procedure, and sponsored all homecoming festivities and the Hilarities. This year's Hilarities was directed by Helen Forsgren, with Roger Anderson and Dale Palmer as co-assistants. The student council president is elected by popular vote of the senior high students. This year's officers are: president, Dan Grandpre; yice president, John Gustafson; and secretary-treasurer, Phillip Dripps. Mr. Clifford Rykken is the faculty adviser. Alexandria's council was represented at two important meetings during the past year. Dan Grandpre, accompanied by Mr. Arthur Hafdal, attended the National Convention of Student Councils at Cincinnati, Ohio. This past fall Mr. Rykken, Mr. Hafdal, Cordelia Kuhn, Barbara Neby, Arne Peterson, and Dan Grandpre attended a meeting of the Central Minnesota Association of Student Councils that was held at Willmar. - 72 - Left to right, Row 1: E. FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA The Alexandria Chapter of Future Farmers of America has increased its enrollment from 33 Greenhands in 1946 to 33 Greenhands, 30 Chapter Farmers and two State Farmers in 1950. The total net worth of all the students enrolled in agriculture at the end of last year was $17,- 893.32, making the average member's net worth $365.15. This is the result of an inter-curricular activity which definitely shows a dollar and cents value besides a value from the educational stand- point. The officers of this chapter for this year of 1950 are: Charles Carlson, president; Bill Hintzen, vice president; Emroy Johnson, secretary; Max Beilke, reporter; Mickey Herzog, treasurer; Theodore Myren, sentinel. Various members have made several trips of great importance and educational value during the year. Among these were the trips to the National Convention at Kansas City, Missouri, and the livestock marketing school at South St. Paul. - 74 - Left to right, Row 1: P. Dripps, D. Unumb, R. Johnson, D.
