Class Prophecy Old woman» said John Henry, Put some rose leaves in DAT TIRE, ANO LAY ON SOME MULLEN LEAVES AND SASSAFRAS ROOTS AND THYME AND BASIL. PUT FOURTEEN BLOOMS FROM OE LILAC BUSH, ANO A HANDFUL OF BLACK-EYED SUSIES. DE N STICK YO' H A I 0 IN OAT CHIMNEY JAM ANO TELL ME WHUT YOU KIN SEE IN DAT SOLID RED SMOKE. Roark Bradford. After a good many years of hard work I had become one of the most SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS MEN ON THE WEST COAST. My FRIENDS DECIDED THAT SHOULD TAKE A REST ADD DO A BIT OF TRAVELINC. I AGREED TO DO SO BUT NOT UNTIL AFTER THE ROSE BOWL FOOTBALL GAME OF BECAUSE MY HOME state, Alabama, was again to be the lucky team to play the Stanforo Inoians. Coach Donald Petrey's Crimson Tide had a haro fight in get- ting AN EXTRA POINT TO BEAT COACH M.A R VI N CRAWFORD'S InOIANS. ThE ONLY THING WHICH KEPT PETREY'S SPIRITS UP OURING THE GAME WAS HIS BETTER HALF, THAT CHARMING BLOND FANNIE BELLE CARPENTER. AFTER THIS GAME I LEFT FOR MY TRAVELS, MY FIRST STOP BEING HAVANA CUBA. ONE NIGHT I DROPPED IN AT A SIDEWALK CAFE ANO THE CHARMING DANCER IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FLOOR WAS CUE SMITH, NOW FAMOUS FOR HER RHUMBAS. ABOUT THIS TIME A SOPHISTICATED HOSTESS WALKED BY, WHO WAS THE IVER DICNIFIEO FRANCES Dark. The next day I left for London. The quiet-looking steward who CONDUCTED ME TO MY CABIN WAS RALPH NEIGHBORS. LaTER WHEN I COMPLAINED ABOUT THE FOOD ON THE SHIP, IT WAS CAREFULLY EXPLAINED TO ME THAT ANNIE Lou Moore was one cook and Marie Langley was the other, Marie being so INTERESTED IN THE OISH.-WASHER THAT SHE FORGOT ABOUT THE CAVIAR. UPON arriving in London I went immediately to the Savoy Hotel, and who should GREET ME FROM BEHIND THE DESK AS MANAGER BUT SIDNEY OSBORN, NOW QUITE an Englishman with monocle, spats and an Oxforb accent. A snappy-look- ING BELL-BOY SHOWEtCME TO MY ROOM. On SECOHO GLANCE I SAW IT WAS JOHN Chapman. A very talkative brunette maid came in to change the linens, AND NOTICING SOMETHING FAMILIAR ABOUT HER LARGE DARK EYES I RECOGNIZED Eoith Saxon. I suppose she had plenty of practice tor her eyes since Jerry Grimes workeo in this hotel as chief bottle-washer. While in LondonI took in some of the towns bright spots. In Lawton Rich's elite night—club'Nellie Lou Allen was doing the vocal numbers ano Hilda Jackson was doing the hotcha dancing. I was soon calleo to New York ON BUSINES8. On THE SAME BOAT GOING OVER WITH ME WERE PROFESSOR JAKE McCullough, world-famous authority on Egyptian mummies, and author of the book Why Kinc Tut had House-Maid's Knee. Also on the ship was Europe's fastest talker, Willie Brooks. The Walter Winchell of Paris. In New York I tooka trip out to Coney Island. The first thing I saw ano HEARD WAS a BARKER YELLING, SEE CoNEY ISLAND'S GREATEST SPECTACLE, Leola McCullough the only woman wrestles, traineo by the one and only Ann Hoool I dropped in at a near-by hot-dog stano where I was waiteb on by Bert Bailey. I then decided to go high-brow so I went to 18

Carneo i e Hall where two world-famous artist's were civino a benefit concert. They were Aoa Bert Dean» pianist, and Mary Elizabeth Ford, ACTRESS, WRITER ANO LECTURER. THE NEXT DAY I OECIOEO TO SEE THE FIRST BASEBALL CAME OF THE SEASON. THE STAR OF THIS CANE WAS FLOYD BLANKEN- SHIP WHO WON IT FOR THE NEW YORK YANKEES. I LEARNED THAT THE YANKEES WERE FINANCED BY THE FAMOUS INVENTER, PRICE BaILEY WHOSE HOBBY WAS BASE- BALL. That evening I took in a musical comedy. Amonc the other adorable CHORUS CIRLS WERE MAWRINE SPRACCINS AND VEMA NEIGHBORS. ThE NEXT MORNING WALKING OOWN FIFTH AVENUE I NOTICED THAT THE SMARTEST BEAUTY SALON IN New York was owned by Virginia Dark and Helen Wingaro. Neat to the salon was an artist's stuoio over which hung a sign saying, Katherine Shivers, Commercial Artist. Further business called me to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The lawyer with whom I was to deal was Bennie Jean Dabbs. Her other partners were Venie McClellan ano Eleanor Duke. The company I ASSOCIATED WITH WAS THE WAITES AND WlNGARO BEER COMPANY, OWNED AND OPERATEO BY HARRY WAITES ANO JlM WlNGARD. FROM HERE I WENT TO THE WlNOY City, Chicago and floating around on one of its breezes was Ruby Smith, Sallie Rand's latest rival. On the invitation of a friebo I went out to the University of Chicago where the students had just elected Paul Mitchell as their most absent-minoed professor. Later I went up to Chicago’s largest broadcasting studio where I found that the best raoio announcer was Garrett Thomas with Charles Tapley as souno-effect man. Having a feeling in my heart for home,I turned my steps that way, FEELING THAT MY TRAVELS WERE QUITE SUCCESSFUL SINCE I HAD 8EEN ALL MY OLD CLASS-MATES AND FOUND OUT WHAT THEY WERE DOING. Bob Wilbanks, Class Prophet. i 19
