Their monthly meetings were led by Presi- dent Tim Winquist and their advisor, Mr. Quick. Other officers for the 1973-74 year were: vice-president - Bryan Eden, secretary-Steve Farley, and treasurer-Paul Saugstad. Again this year the FFA sold citrus fruit to people in the com- munity. The highlight of the year was the Father-son Banquet. Members also took part in various judging contests. Something new that was put into action this year was a paper drive. Once a month the FFA with the help of the FHAwent around the city of Alcester and picked up old newspapers that the people of the community donated. This was a project that was not only fun to do but also helped the community. Another project of the FFA was landscaping around the new school building. This year Tim Winquist received the State Farmer degree which is the highest degree awarded in South Dakota to an FFA member. Gary Kots received a $100 check for winning the Funks 304 Challenge. FFA award winners: 1st Row- Dave Warner, Duane Ryken, Dave Hammitt, Lynn Hagen, Vaughn Johnson, John Duncan, and Gene Johnson. 2nd Row- Chuck Vreugdenhil, Brent Ericson, Bryan Eden, Steve Farley, Tim Winquist, and Jeff Wilson. 27

FHA Adopts Grandmothers Members of the Future Homemakers of America led by their eight officers and chapter advisor Mrs. Erickson worked together to aid the community, promote home economics, and to have fun. Each FHA member adopted a grandmother. The girls helped their adopted grandmothers individually throughout the years by helping her, running errands, or by just visiting with her. FHA ers also cooperated with the FFA in a paper drive. The girls raised money for their organization by selling concessions at football games. A white elephant silent auction was held to make money for the scholarship fund. Special highlights during the year were Daddy-date Night, Mother- daughter Banquet, and the FHA-FFA roller skating party. Dakota Tells the News Each month news of Alcester High School activities was published in the school paper, the DAKOTA. A student staff consisting of editors, art editors, feature editors, sports editors, typists, and a production manager worked hard to get the publication out on time. The DAKOTA included coverage of special events and meetings, sports stories, editorials, interviews, and a little humor. Randy Medema, editor, assisted by Becky Cooper and Mr. Melvin Ptak, advisor, had the task of getting the paper out at the end of each month. Each month reporters checked the beat sheet” to see what stories they had to write. Once these stories were turned in typists typed the rough drafts so that the editors could plan out the pages. These pages had to be typed on stencils. From here art editors took care of headlines and drew in original sketches. Feature editors were responsible for feature pages which included such articles as senior interviews, coming events, and the school grapevine. Sports editors took care of Cub's corner and some sports stories. A production editor had the final job of running off all the pages. Dakota Staff: Seated-Debbie Moller, Susan Pearson, Gloria Espeland, and Vicky Thormodsgaad. First Row-Mr. Ptak, Lisa Sogn, Becky Cooper, Rhonda Richter, Carolyn Johnson, Darla Anderson, and Rhonda Kleinhans. Second Row-Jim Huenik, Kent Hongslo, Brad Kruse, Randy Medema, and Marlys Holtkamp. 28
