They lost to three class 'B'’ teams and two class 'AM teams. All the class B teams that defeated the Cubs were rated among the top fifteen teams in South Dakota. The Cubs, who were rated most of the season, were rated as high as fourteenth at one time. The season began with seven straight victories for the Cubs. Hurley stopped the string of wins and handed Alcester their first defeat. The Cubs went on to beat old rivals like Canton Academy, Lennox, Hawarden, Elk Point, Beresford, and Centerville. In the annual Yankton Benefit games on January 27, 1960, Menno won over the Alcester Cubs. Menno was the second class “B” team to whip the Cubs. In another benefit game a week later the Cubs won over highly regarded Irene in a real thriller. The score ended up 70-68 after a double overtime. Irene went on to take fourth place in the State Tournament. In the late stages of the season Alcester lost to Parker, which was another tough team. The Cubs avenged an earlier defeat by beating Hurley in an overtime game by a score of 72-68. Lennox, who went on to win the Championship, defeated Alcester in the first game of the District Tournament.
