BAND After a hnef summer vacation band practice resumed on August 25 to start a new year M' Flemlng back for his thlrd year dnrected the band of nearly 40 members The Swxng Baud was enlarged this year to accomodate the oncomrng musxcnans The goup performed at several basketball games and P T A meetings Dlfferent small groups also entertained at various meetxngp The mass band made appearances at Stlmt Nnght and one of the P T A meetings The hugh light of the 1951 52 school year for the band members was the Eastern Iowa Band Festxval held ln Cedar Rapxds ln May Forty fxve musxclans and seven twnrlers accompaxned their representatlve for the Eastern Iowa Band Queen Dons .lean Halstead That evenmg the band and twlrlers partnclpated ln the band revue at Hawkeye Downs Small musical groups organxzed thls year were as follows BRASS QUARTET Dons .lean Halstead Edward Gosnell Gary SAXOPHONE TRIO Shuley Johnson Clair Balderston Janet Halstead Carol Tntle Bugg BRASS QUINTET .luanxta Newnnn Mary Elllson Carol Trltle CLARINET QUARTET Norman Wassmer Yvonne Chrlstensen Cary Halstead Edward Cosnell Ray Batchelder Bully Hatch TRUMPET TRIO .luannta Newman Edward Gosnell Dons Halstead TWIBLEBS The two classes of baton twxrlers have tackled and accomplished a number of new twlrls dunng band concerts and school practlces All twnrlers have enjoyed maklng appearances at hall games band concerts and the band festxval We are looking forward wxth antlcxpatxon to future programs Next year we should llke very much to try our hands at acrobatlc twxrllng and other novelty twnrls Each feels there IB yet much to he accomplished from this fascinating art. TIIIIEE DAYS 014 GRACE The jumor class play this year followed the Brooke famlly to the Ozark Mountains where Uncle Osgood Brooke took his sister-ln law Annabel Brooke and his two nieces Connie and Babs Brooke to escape the ardent attentxons of the gxrls sweethearts Steve lxelso and Dewey lamb As a diversion for the girls lncle Osgood lnvlted Bull Thorwald an egotlstlcal young xthlete for a vlslt only to learn that he was also host to Steve and Dewey It seemed only natural nh at Lonme and Babs fell for the Mighty Muscular Blll who offered qulte a contrast to fhubby Dewey and lazy Steve T complxcate matters the gu'ls athletic cousm Grace Darling arrived to spend three days Now xt so happened that Blll was loolong for an athletic sweetheart and heretofore Grace had been nothmg more than a pal to most boys Here was her chance to make a hut mth someone of her own abxlltles but Connie and Babs seelng this also qulckly convinced Grace and changed her into a clnngmg vxne baby talkmg Darllng The transformation proved to be ln the gurls favor xn that Bull loathed Grace and turned hrs complete attentlons to Conme and Babs who suffered agonxes ln order to keep up wxth He 'Vlan Bull But Steve and Dewey fell head over heels for Grace this presented another problem for the gu'ls At this time a home town friend of Grace s Spud Bowser put ln hls appearance Spud happened to be a champlon athlete also and with much coaxlrg Steve Dewey and Grace Induced hlm to dress as a girl athlete and deflate B111 s ego B111 fell for Bedella Bowser as dld Lncle Osgood and Newt llawson a local hull bully The nosey brother Chuck Brooke .lack Slmmons an athlete blackmaxler Ma Hawson a gun totlng hull bully woman and l nz llawson the Brooke s hull billy mald all provided excitement a plenty As expected everythlng ended happlly with Steve and Connle Dewey and Babs Lncle Osgood and Annabel Newt and Lxz and Spud and Grace all coolng at one another It see med that the audlence as well as the cast enjoyed the episodes ln the Ozarks C AST Connie Brooke . . . . . elder sister Newt llawson. . . . . handy man . . .
