With the singers arrayed in their usual wine-colored cassocks and white surplices and stationed before the large church window, the annual Christmas cantata, The Shepherds' Christmas, by Morton G. Luvass, was presented in the high school auditorium, December eighteenth and nineteenth. The theme was carried out beautifully with several solos sung, and the numbers of the A Capella Choir added to it in their organ-like qualities. The stage, with its many-lighted trees, glittering red cellophane balls, the clever tableaus, lent to the general atmosphere. When the last notes of the mighty Hallelujah Chorus sounded, the audience left with regret but carried with them the true spirit of Christmas. Under the excellent guidance of Miss Virginia McManus, this year's Cantata proved to be one of the finest Christmas presentations in the history of the school. .-16.. -Clubs and Awards- The OpereH'a . . . Under the direction of Miss Virginia McManus, the high school music department presented on March twentieth and twenty-first in the high school auditorium Joan of the Nancy Lee, a comic operetta by Louis Woodson Curtis. Taking the leads were Doris White as Lady Joan Leyton, and Bill Morrow as Cap'n Dick, ,loan's old sweetheart and the captain of the pirate ship on which Joan and her bridesmaids were taken pris- oners. Marguerite Boyle very convincingly played the part of the highly excitable Dona. Bill Bloody, played by Bill Shaw, was the pirate out to get control of the ship, but was finally won over by the Mistress Rhoda Greensarl, played by Dorothy Tireman. Stut- tering Steve, played by Howard Shockey, got many laughs in his pursuit of Henrietta, played by Jane Johnston. Dorinda and Florinda, played by Betty Gassaway and Virginia Lackey, were the twins whom Barnaby Hyde, played by Marvin Romme, and Jerry Leyton, played by Bill Martin, were always getting mixed up. The chorus of pirates and bridesmaids made a colorful background and provided an excellent musical score. 177- -Clubs and Awards- Tlne Junior Play , C E Rice! Wrecks! Troubles! Parents! All went to make UFootloose, the play presented by the junior class December fifth and sixth in the auditorium, a racy well-timed comedy, to put it in the words of the able director, Miss Ann Komadina. The Early children, Hope fcnloria Lee Kingsburyl, Dick Uerry Friedmanl, Bob fstanton Reynoldsl, and Mary fMarjorie Harrell- Helen Gaylordl, sent their parents, convincingly portrayed by Bill Rippel and Mary Elizabeth Potter, on a vacation to prove that the young people could take care of themselves without the help of their parents. Finally, however, the problems were solved with the help of I-lope's former sweetheart, Sanford Welles CBill Johnsonjg Hope and Sanford were reconciled, but everyone admitted that affairs ran smoother when Mother and Dad took charge. .-78- -Clubs and Awards- p mu Alice Schulman, Pat Lenihan, Catharine Bail, Miss Komaclina. Second row: Doim H mans, Dorothy Tireman, Maxine Bullock, Lola Lee Lucas. Third row Darrell Bunchficld, Gene Harms, Melvin Morris, Bill Shaw, John Baislcy. Senior Play . . . Tiger House, a popular mystery comedy-drama by Robert St. Clair, was presented by the Senior Class on May 8 and 9. It was a play of thrills, chills, romance, laughter, and above all-suspense. Erma Lowrie, a young shop girl, played by Maxine Bullock, in- herited an estate from her eccentric aunt, and according to the terms of the will, had to occupy the house for one year. Erma's cousins Arthur fDarrell Burchfieldj and Oswald fjohn Baisleyl, her living aunt, Sophia fDorothy Tiremanl, and Peggy Van Ess fAlice Schulmannj were all house guests when things began to happen. Screams in the night clutching tiger claw w ' d l' h d , - s, elr lg ts, an strange disappearings of some of the characters added to the atmosphere of mystery. Others in the cast who contributed to the success of the play were M .... ac, the boatman-but a detective in disguise fGene Harmsl, Thompson, the lion-keeper fBill Shawl, Mrs. Murdock, the house- keeper CKatherine Bail and Dorothy Tiremanl, and the mystery- woman fl..ola Lee Lucasl. -79- -Clubs and Awards- l The Stage Crew . Three cheers for a swell group of boys: this year's stage crew, Bill Woods, Clarence Burke, Robert Harrell, and Bob Brady. They were responsible for pulling curtains, arranging and setting up the scenery and the props, and adjusting the lights and sound effects. ln short they were the boys behind, and responsible for, the scenes. They were on the job not only for the junior and senior plays, the ernbliesg but also they gave their time when the high school stage was used by any outside organizations. ' f ll ho ave their time and operetta, cantata, and ass So give a hand for these energetic e ows w g effort: and whose handiwork we see, but who are never seen them selves by the audience who mthey strive to please. -30- -Publications La Reata Staff .
