HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF I937
HV CLASS of 37 m the school year 34 35 was no
Q exceptlon to the general rule that Sophomores just
l aren t kung puns ln Albuquerque Hrgh School Af
ter the ballots were counted the class had as leaders
ID the hazardous flrst year lmmy Barley as presrdent Patsy
Bxlyue as vlce president and Lucllle Mudgett as secretary Of
1ll the promlse evldent rn the class m varlous flelds that on
the athletlc fleld was most noticeable Harlan Nlorrls
'xnd lmmy Pappan dldnt beat any Senlors out of basketball
letters but they served notrce that they were gomg to town m
he next few years Marlon Plomteaux and lmmy who made
track letters were the only members of the Class of 37 to make
varsl y letters as Sophs
During the unnor year the class came into its own with
FYIRCIS Barton as president lVlorr1s Drefendorf asslsted as
vlce presldent whxle Lucllle agam became secretary The
umor play Seventeen was a real hut and several unlors
had parts nn the operetta Four unlors were lettermen on the
haphazard football team of l935 and the great success of the
basketball and track teams depended a great deal on the Class
of 37 athletes fhe efforts of the umor ofhcers were realized
when the umor Senror Prom was grven lncrdentally Marllyn
llntchens a umor was chosen ueen of the Prom
As the leadms., class ln Albuquerque Hugh School when
enrollment figures reached unprecedented herghts the Class of
37 showed that 1t really meant to lead Frank ourdan was
elected presldent vuth fugene Rader as vnce president and
Mary l lelen Crahl as secretary The Class of l937 might well
be termed as the class which left one year too soon because
next year the new burldxngs wlll flrst see service but this didn t
hrnder its taking an active part rn school lrfe rn l93 and l937
Seventeen out of the twenty two football lettermen were Sen
nors whlle there were eleven Semors among the fifteen basket
ball lettermen Harlan lVlorr1s lmmy Pappan and Charley
Ortlz brought real glory to the school by makmg the All State
basketball team It can easrly be seen that athletes of the Class
f 37 were mstrumental nn wmmng the state champronshlps m
football and basketball Athletes get most of the glory but It
should not be overlooked that fourteen Semors earned Gold
A s and that all the editors of the school publrcatlons were
nn the Class of 37 as well as leaders ln other fields

three outstanding productions of the year, the

: ,ffl
' F cover a great deal of talent yearly and do much
ij e .,- 'ii '3 toward giving experience to would-be actors and
singers. Miss Shepard produces the plays. The fact that she
has a reputation for good work was realized when many out-
siders were seen in the audiences of both the junior and senior
plays and that each drew large crowds for two showings
Miss lVlclVlanus develops the song birds of the school The
operetta was a tribute to her ability to direct and her chor
uses this year had several outside engagements including one
at the Kimo theatre
We cannot mention school productions without thinking
of the beautiful and adequate stage settings 'lhey are built
and handled entirely by the student stage crew the forgotten
men seen only if you vo backstage ames Rightley Bobby
Dunsworth Watson Snyder and Fred Simmons handled the
difficult job this year with ohn Beck Frank Crubbs and
ack Hardin acting as apprentices Their many hours of la
bor are often unappreciated but a great deal of self satis
faction must certainly be theirs

l IS the belxef of many people that New
Nlexlco IS nothing more than a land of
barren plalns and dry mesas We are
proud of thls typlcally Southwestern
scenery and justly but when variety I9 deslred there
are lofty mountalns down whose thlckly forested
slopes rush sparkling streams and ln whxch all sorts
of game abound plentlfully One need not travel
far from Albuquerque to reallze thls for less than
ten mules to the east are the Sandra mountams
whlch are ID the summer a haven of rest for people
seekmg rellef from summer heat and ln the wlnter
the scene of Wlnter sports Clouderoft Ruidoso and
the emez country are a few of the other places which
defy anyone to say New Mexico lb a desert

rmcmim Ml: THE many awards for mer1t ln Albuquerque
Hlgh School perhaps the hlghest two are the
glbold A grven elther for outstandmg scholas
tlc work or for scholastlc work coupled wlth
extra aCt1VltlCS and the block A glven for partlclpa
tlon IH the major sports and for outstandmg work 1n
gym classes BCS1dCS these awards there are letters and
certxficates glven for outstandlng work ln other Helds
For falthful work ln the band or orchestra letters are
glven Good servlce on a publlcatlon staff merlts a let
ter Then there are the0 A T andO G A certlflcates
and pms for outstandlng work ln the commerclal de
partment Awards of Vanous sorts are gxven for very
good work ln the varlous courses such as SCICDCC math
ematxcs and the languages
Some people try as they may do not seem to be
able to w1n an award It should be remembered though
that all rewards for efforts are not tanglble The ab
stract are often more valuable than the concrete For
thls reason those people who do not qulte reach thelr
goal but who have perslstently tr1ed should not be dls
couraged They are certalnly better off than those who
have not trled or who have qult They w1ll ultlmately
reach a goal and when they do they w1ll have a great
deal of satlsfactlon and wlll be ready to try for hlgher
standards Thls IS why coaches and teachers always tell
students to keep on trymg and that lt IS never too late
to start

DEBATE CI UB
OMPOSED of eight members the Debate Club rep
resents the three classes in the Albuquerque High
W School Enterlm., into active debate procedure
after the November election the members of the
club held a heated discussion on the proposition Resolved
that the Republican party as such should be abolished by law
The pronounced interest of the student body in the matters of
peace organization and the government armament policy led
the Debate Club to frame a debate on the question Resolved.
that the government of the United States should lend armed
assistance to the Loyalist Government of Spain. The purpose
was really to show hovx much more sensible a non-intervention
policy would be. The outcome of the debate was planned be-
forehand. For the first time in debate history twelve' responsi-
ble judges were chosen from the student body. As a tina
question for debate was chosen the proposal--Resolved: that
Congress should adopt the Rooseveltian policy regarding the
Supreme Court. Mr. Simpson was sponsor and did much to-
ward making debating an activity in our school again.

COACHES
BIRCH-:Dil PON our coaches we find difhculty in heaping enough
praise for a Job well clone They have developed
the athletes and sportsmen that are necessary for
successful teams Coach Wilson the head coach
has been guiding Bulldogs for fourteen years All of his teams
increase his fame by their sportsmanship and never say die
spirit that is learned by example His Bulldog athletes have
made names wherever they go To Coach Renfro Pop
falls the job of helping Wilson without the press publicity
Pop trams the undergraduates and helps with the varsity
Wilson says of Renfro that he couldn t possibly do without him
Truly Pop is a very useful man Coach Barreras a student
wanted to be helpful and soon found himself training the foot
ball line and learning the Wilson system. Emmanuel Barreras
is a firm believer in calisthenics and to him may be credited
the poise and grace of the Bulldog line-ask the linemen of the
opposing teams. Congratulations to these three men for the
building of characters and gentlemen that has been brought
about by competition and careful guidance.
