A quarter of a century ago a great English historian warned us that civilization is a race between education and catastrophe. Today this warning is terribly real. Two world wars, within the span of one lifetime, have brought us to the brink of disaster. These wars have taken a terrific toll in human life and money. Of the nine great nations in the world at the turn of the century, only two remain. Truly, the four horsemen ride high. Statesmen and rulers have tried, without avail, to bring peace on earth. Diplomacy has failed. Treaties and international agreements' are not a guarantee to peace. Great armaments do not prevent war. Economic sanctions are fruitless, Even the church, with its great humanitarian purpose, has not brought peace to the -world. , Why not give education a chance? Wars begin in the minds of men. Before the first rifle shot, before the first public declaration, plans for war are laid in the offices of statesmen. Men must think war before war begins. Why not think peace? In war we emphasize our antagonisms and fight. Why not emphasize our common interests and cooperate? Two factors contributing to world peace are understanding andtolerance. We must understand other people, their ideals, motives and habits of living. We must know how and what other people think and why they act as they do. This should not be too difficult. We can vigorously disagree with the man next door on business ethics, politics and religion and still be good neighbors. Just so, we can live on the planet with other nations, whose government, religion, language and mode of life differ widely from our own. We need not approve, just tolerate. Understanding and tolerance develop through education and experience. They are not inborn qualities. The time to teach these qualities is the public schools. What a challenge to the teacher! What an opportunity to him who wants to make a real contribution to the welfare of mankind! See to it that education has a chance. When the millennium comes may it be said that the American teacher played an important part. T R. H Snyder V .H K 7 X V . V ., I N .I L- X . Those who turned out for practice received their new coach Gene Cooper with high hopes for a successful season. Winding up with four victories, three defeats and one tie with competition that should have rolled over our cardinal and black. Next year the Normal will have back a seasoned eleven with plenty of reserve power to help along towards an undefeated season. However, the loss of Elmer Clute, Glen Engelking, Cecil Winn, Cecil Watson, Ernie Knee, Leo Compton, and Jack McNutt will hurt the Panthers deeply. Clute, Engelking, Winn, Watson and Knee will graduate in the spring and Compton and McNutt have transferred to Boise Junior College. HOME COMING GAME Before a large assembly of old grads and the present student body, Albion defeated a highly regarded Dixie J. C. eleven from St. George, Utah, 41-6 Homecoming Day October 12. For the first time this year the Panthers showed their true form and proceeded to trounce the previously undefeated Flyer squad. In this game it was mostly a two man show with Gene Bledsoe and Glen Engelking doing the honors of rolling up the touchdowns after a fast charging Normal line went time after time to break up the Dixie offense. Cooper in hopes of bringing the score down sent in every player on the Normal squad. A lot of the credit goes to the reserve power because of their never say die playing on the field. ALBION 0-U.I.S.B. 6 This game was a heart breaker for the Normal as they played one of the finest games they had played all year against a team rated three touchdowns better. Two passes spelled defeat for the ever alert Panther line and back field. In this game the Panthers were playing one of their best but just couldn't hit when the time came for a touchdown play. In the last quarter with only two minutes left, Wes Bell returned a kick from his own 41 yard line to the Bengals 4 yard line. In four plays the Panthers ended up on their 115 yard line. A few seconds later they aagin got down to the Bengals 11-yard line but time ran out on them and the Bengals went home with a 6-0 win. Junior Varsity and the Junior Varsity of the Southern Branch. They hammered two decisive wins over the Twin Falls American Legion Mitt slingers. In the Northwest Golden Gloves Tournament, held in Twin Falls in Feb- ruary, Lyle Taylor, our light heavyweight fighter, won the championship. John Wright hammered out decisive wins over all his opponents to win the middleweight crown. These were the only two boxers to represent Albion Normal and they carried our colors proudly. Some of our fighters who were undefeated were Sam Banner, 140 lbs., Stan Miricle, 145 lbs., and Lyle Taylor, 175 lbs. Lyle Taylor, Captain of the Albion boxing team, won the Woodland Memorial trophy for the boxer chosen by the judges of the tournament, as contributing the most to the boxing ability and good sportsmanship of the tourna- ment. He also copped the Intermountain Intercollegiate Middleweight title. Jack Boden, our coach, took the 130 pound class title at the Intermountain Intercollegiate Tournament . It had been discontinued during the war but is now published once every two weeks telling the news of the campus, voicing student opinions, and telling a little of the "going ons" on the Albion campus. Our Blazer Staff is: Wayne Skeems, Donald Edwards ----- Eclfitors Opal Smalley, Vi Hamilton ---- Gevwral Mfmagcrs Ardean Schenk, Sonja Kodish ------ Typists Malcom Allred, Mary Christensen, Beulah Moore, Bryce Farr, Wayne Fagg, Willie Lake, and Ray Stoddard ------- Reporters Harold Soeters ------ - Facts and Figures David Ross - - - Faculty Advisor .gzwlenf Cpounci We have almost completed our first post-War year at Albion. Due to many changes, the increased enrollment of male students, return of veterans, many married students and our new status as a four year school, this has been a year of adjustments. Reports indicate that all schools have faced similar problems. Due to the fine spirit of co-operation shown here at Albion we believe we have overcome all obstacles and that next year will show Albion forging ahead to great heights of achievement. But maybe she should have asked an expert whether that word under the spot in her cook book was a teaspoon or a teacup full ot baking powder. Lucky, wasn't it, that not-so-bright Brenda wasn't on the staff that got out this annual, for a book like this is easier to spoil than a batch of biscuits? ' But your staff didn't pull any Brenda boners. They knew where to dig to get the latest Iow- down on the lads and Iovelies - with pix of who's who and where it happened. And they also knew that the book had to be easy to read and the pictures clear, so you wouldn't have to say, "That's me-the one without the tail." Instead of guessing, they went to those who knew the angles and the answers. They got the best printer, and chose us! to make the engravings. For 40 years we have specialized in school annuals and know lust how to work with editors, artists, photographers, faculty, and the printer to get the best results. We believe you'lI agree that this book's a beauty, and are glad that Brenda was the little girl who wasn't there. Truss News com. Pts. msn .0 .3 'WMTWL' ' xg- XZ ff..
