It didn't take long for us country and city "cousins" to get together to hold our place in high school. We elected the following class officers: Robert Miser, president, Ted Shisler, vice- president, Phyllis McCoy, secretary, and Bonnie Renkenberger, treasurer. Mrs. Weimer and Mr. Brill were our class sponsors. We had two class parties that year, one in the school cafeteria and the other was a barn party at the home of Beverly Boggs. When we started our sophomore year, we had an enrollment of 52. We were then among those who tread on the green freshmen. We elected the following class xfficers: Ted Shisler, president, Robert Miser, vice-president, Jean Gappinger, secretary, and Phyllis McCoy, treasurer. Mrs. Church and Mr. Brill were our class sponsors. This was the year to order our class sweaters, and, after much discussion, we decided on maroon sweaters with gray letters. We were now juniors and belonged to the upper classmen. We lost some of our students and now had an enrollment of 41. Our class officers for the year were jean Gappinger, presidentg Duane Guthrie, vice-president, and Phyllis McCoy, secre- tary-treasurer. Mrs. Austill and Mr. Little were our class sponsors. This was the year we ordered our class rings. We had concessions at the ball games and at the county tournament. We gave a class play, "Finders Creepers," on April 17 and 18 with Mrs. Austill as director. At last we were seniors. In October we gave our class play, "Let Me Out of Here," under the direction of Mrs. Austill. We put out the school paper, THE GRAPEVINE, and this annual. We made trips to see our county government in action at the county court house, the state government at Indianapolis, and the national government at Washington, D. C. Our class officers for the year were Charles Stanley, president, Ted Shisler, vice-president, and Kay Staton, secretary-treasurer. Mr. Parker was our class sponsor. We had an enrollment of 38, and, of the original 55, 57 will be graduated. BARBARA YOUNIS Vocational Girls' Chorus: 4. l'0l9A,eCg Let's take a look into our crystal ball to see what is coming for us seniors in the future. The first person we see is Lois Alwine busily engaged selling a beautiful dress from her own dress shop to - of all people - Mamie Eisenhower. Oh see! There's that lovely blonde, Beverly Boggs, who doesn't appear a bit older, although she has worked hard as manager of her ranch in Texas - a ranch of oil wells. Who is that dignified head nurse of the Albion Memorial Hospital? Why, it's Linda Buckles! Yes, that tall, handsome entertainer who is entertaining the patients in the Albion Hospital is Russell Coe, the national idol of bobbie soxers. What is that thing flying through the air? Oh, that's Norman Conrad in a flying saucer which he has designed, patented, and manufactured on a large scale. Are those two Abbott and Costello? Of course not! They are Larry Cory and George Frymier who are the nation's most popular comedians. Betty Crothers is the head of the "Florida Traveling Agency." Planned vacations for nurses, at special prices. Elizabeth Elser is with the nurses' division of the Air Force, now stationed in Hawaii. Mrs. Harry Bogner, the former Norma Gage, is chief cook and bottle washer for her husband and -four kids, near Kendallville. Mrs. Ken Smolek, theformer Jean Gappinger, entertained her stand-in, Esther Williams, at her home in Beverly Hills recently. Prominent in the entertainment world is Louetta Gorsuch McC1anahan, the famous trombone player in the Band of America. Dale, her husband, is putting his engineer training into practice in housekeeping and baby sitting. Mr. Duane Guthrie, president of the Third National Bank of Albion, is doing very well - a new car every week. Ed Halferty is sailing the high seas. "A girl in every port" is his motto, Shirley Hickman is the sole owner and manager of the new nursery at the Albion- Jefferson School. She has about 300 enrolled. 15 Q-a.a.q.a.a.a-ct-a-an-a.cz-a-a.fy.a.cg-m-em-a-tx-Q-a-fm-a-1-fr-cr-ci-1-fr-1-a-a-cz-cr-c-4-a-4-a-cm-cl-11-ct-ct-cm-a-1-fs-a41-c-4-tt-tr-a-G-fx-fr-an-1-ft-4-fr-4-'x-fx-4-1-a-fm-ca-ex-az Q iv 5 2 3 2 Q A Q A Q A Q dz Q A Q A 3 A 'GM-G UDV A A E Don Horsewood, famous heavy-weight boxing champion, is appearing on TV 2 Q stations all over the nation as he tries for his 324th consecutive knock-out. After this, the "Trembling Trojans" settled down to a well-earned 10-game winning streak. The winning streak included the Noble County Tournament crown for the second consecutive time. The tournament games were as follows: Albion-Wolflake, Albion- Cromwell, Albion-Avilla. After the County tourney, the Trojans continued winning, but the winning was brought to an abrupt halt by the neighboring Whitley County champs, South Whitley. Although we were beaten in the first game of the Sectional Tourney by a team we had already defeated, Shipshewanna, still, we consider this a good season for we turned in one of the best seasonal records that A. H. S. has ever seen. We finished our basketball season March 17, 1953, with an annual athletic ban- quet, given by the mothers of the athletes. Mr. Millner, coach of the Elkhart High School basketball team, gave an interesting after dinner speech. After this came the awarding of the letters, sweaters. and individual awards to those who had earned them. TEAM STATISTICS 1952-'53 Q x 38 Continued Seasos Wolflake . The first year is a more or less exploratory course to discover special abilities, talents, and interests. During that time they study several different divisions of Art Education: Com- mercial Art, which includes poster lettering and motto layoutsg Crafts and Designs, which include oil and water painting. A number of our students have been able to show quite a degree of talent in some of the fields of advanced art and painting, which has been carried over into their actual art participation after they leave school. School environment, together with home and community atmosphere, should be of such a kind that every student should be challenged into thinking of and engaging in constructive acts and experiences, be they ever so small. No young person is neutral in a school situation. He is either contributing to his own, and thereby the school's over-all success, or he is detracting from both. There seems to be no possibility of separating the two. Whether the student completes an assignment, borrows a book, returns a book, bids "good-morning" to a teacher, offers to do a school errand, picks up waste paper from the floor, refrains from saying unkind things, compliments a teacher for con- sideration, says "please," "thank you," or "good luck," he is contributing something to his own and the school's success. To the extent that teachers and students are actively, thoughtfully, and continually alert to the opportunities to serve each other, to that extent does the good school be- come a common product of allg and there is no time for anything to detract because all are too busy finding opportunities to serve others. The more conscious one is in trying to find opportunity to make others happy and pleased, the more the person himself is getting from the situation. "Service above self" is not only a Rotary slogang it is a pattern for life that will attain a peace of mind which is, after all, one of the greatest goods one can hope to experience.
