Because we believe that Albion High's classes, activities, athletics and administration all rate a great big "A", We have chosen this letter as the theme of the 1949 Chevron. 4 DEDICATION Miss Elizabeth Corbett has, indeed, proved to be a friend in need. The corridor to 210 has seen much wear - discipline problems - lovelorn seniors - all kinds of com- mittees troop unendingly to "Miss Anthony" Corbettls always open door. Her ready advice has provided solace and comfort for many an anxious teenager. In appreciation of her helpful friendship and kindness this Chevron is gratefully dedicated to her without her knowledge. 5 CHARLES C. D,AhIICO Principal CARL I. The year got off to a good start - joining band - signing up for Chevron stag - election of class officers, which showed signs of leap year - Secretary-Treasurer, Janet Lauren, Vice-President, Joan Martina, and Judy Clark, President. The freshman party, planned by anxious committees - a contest between the sophomores and ourselves, which by some mistake, we won - the joy of depositing the first ten dollars into our big, but empty strongbox - rushing like mad to meet the deadline for our Red Cross gift boxes - Delores worrying about what to wear to a dance. The class as a whole was sports-minded and full of school spirit - having our own hockey and basketball teams - Mary's running to catch the students' bus before it left - Jeanie looking for Don at the games - cheering and yelling some "personal" remarks for the "ref" - the freshman class boasting of its varsity cheerleader, Dolores Goris and two Junior varsity cheerleaders, Janet Lauren and Joan Martina. Now approaching the end of our first year, we begin to think more of the fun we had and less of the work - we shall profit from our experiences. TOP PHOTO Bottom Raw: A. DiLailovico, L. Sidari, S. Chatfield SENIOR SERVICE SQUAD A madhouse - that's what we all said when we came out of thox mectings in 325 - a wonder we accomplished anything - but we did. Somehow we managed to have a successful food drive around Christmas time for poor families. Remember trying to get the cafeteria decorated in time for Christmas and Valentines Day? How long did the Christmas decorations stay up after Christmas? Oh, well nobody volun- teered to take them down - so they just stayed there. - Let's not forget our success- ful bake sale or should we say cake sale? - By the way, whose cake was last to be sold? - About the biggest thing the S. S. S. attempted this year was to start a traditional St. Patricks Day Dance. Girls, try to get your poster made! - it's two days before the dance. - That Irish pipe we made for the decorations - wonder what the janitors thought about that creation, when they hauled it away to the incinerator. Yes, l think we all agreed - the blarney stone certainly was a better idea after all. What muscle men of the Senior class remember hauling our blarney stone into the school? Cee, there's a lot to think about when you're having a dance - Who will stay after school tonight to crinkle crepe paper? - All in all. the S. S. S. has done more this year than in recent years -- a clothing drive after Easter. - Not all the juniors were well prepared for a big initiation -- It took a strong constitution to survive what we had planned. - We hope to have enough money by the end of the year to leave the school a nice gift. Cood luck - Miss Erwin - Miss MacArthur - seniors of 1950 in carrying on the services to A. H. Conhom THE CHEVRON STAFF Ah yes! - 1949 -- the year of no funds. Editors, Stephanie Dragon and Robert Paganelli - assistant editors, Karen McKenna and Charles Pedler, facing an almost empty treasury as well as the largest staff in several years to help replenish it - attacking the problem with typical A. H. S. get-up-and-gol Few of them will forget the fun of rehearsing for the three one-act plays. Mrs. Cole's delicious refreshments - Terryls hm-m-m - Charles Pedler's portrayal of a gossipy young housewife con- fiding his secrets to the equally gossipy Terry Cole - Phil Enzie's tugging and pulling at "unmentionables" - David Sturges' preoccupation with "prune whip" - all in 'Alf Men Played Cards As Women Dol' - beautiful German spies - English atmosphere - atomic research providing the background for the talents of Sara Cole, Joyce DeZetter, Stephanie Dragon, Joyce Herman, Carolyn McFarland, and Betty Rowe, who performed "Easy Exit" - and last but not least "ln the Mist" - an old hag played by Karen McKenna, a villain, Robert Paganelli, the villain's sister, Eliza- beth Spalla and a dazed young man played by Bill Sadlowski. Also under'Terry's direction, weekly Friday movies were held - thrilling boxing and wrestling matches arranged by Dayton Bills - the gym echoing with the excited squeals of the feminine element - the sale of auto plates, lipsticks and pencils all prominently displaying the Albion colors. Late in October the editors, assistant editors and literary chairman journeyed with Miss Corbett to Syracuse for the annual meeting of the Empire State Scholastic Press Association. Those panel discussions proved most interesting al- though the little details - following the funeral procession - Karen's forgetting her pajamas - Marc's date, and the close harmony on the way home will probably be remembered the longest. - All in all, this year has been a busy one for the Chevron. The theme was decided upon, discussed, discarded, and a new one adopted - Moser's lost a box of pictures and David finished retaking them the day that the originals were found - The auto plates would not fit the new cars and didn't sell - But with the cooperation of the other staff chairmen, joyce DeZetter, typing, David Sturges, photography, Bradley Shelp, advertising, Ruth McMahon, art, Royce Hazel, business manager, and Helen Hudson, circulation manager, the challenge of an empty treasury was met and conquered. 49 CLEE CLUB Accomplishedl - Thatis the one word which will describe our Clee Club. Under the excellent direction of Mrs. Trumble, the group meeting twice a week has added a great many songs to its credit as being well sung. - A day in the life of Clee Club would go something like this - There's the bell, hope we make it - Who's supposed to be in that seat? - Pass the music out - Who needs another copy? - Those of you who have gum, please spit it out - Put away your homework - What's wrong with the sopranos today? - Hand in your music - Don't leave until the music is counted - Those are the familiar sayings heard during our half hour of vocalizing. Even though the last pieces have been practiced, you can still hear those beautiful strains of music coming through the halls. - Before Christmas vacation our student body was pre- sented with the annual Christmas Choir which included many girls and boys in the Clee Club. Numerous songs were enjoyed by all. Among them were - "Harkl The Hosts of Heaven Are Singing" - "Glory to God in the Highest" - "Sanctus" - "Cantique de Noelfi Those having solo parts were: John Ferris who sang "And There Were Shepherdsng - Janice Chesbro with "Away in the Manger", - and Joey Sacco singing "Under the Stars." - Then came the operettal How well we remember trudging off to operetta rehearsal at 12:30 almost every day for two weeks and staying after school to practice. It wasnlt all work - there was fun in those rehearsals, too - Was it really the light that blew during "A British Tar", or was it 'Leonard Marks stepping on a cap? - Who left the water on in the darkroom making it two inches deep on the floor and leaking through to the auditorium? - All those trialsome days! But it was worth it for on Friday night, April 8, 1949, a chorus of 40 members backed up the vocal efforts of the nine lead roles in "H. M. S. Pinaforef' Miss Eleanor Chadwick was the accompanist - Morris Wright and Charles Howard arranged the scenery. Rt. Hon. Sir Joseph Porter, First Lord of the Admiralty, was played by Robert Paganelli, while Charles Pedler sang the part of Capt. Corcoran, skipper of the Pinafore. Jean Jackson was the Captain's daughter, Josephine, and Stephanie Dragon was Sir Joseph's cousin Hebe - Janice Chesbro was Little Buttercup, the bumboat woman. Playing the other lead roles were Thomas Roberts and John Ferris as seamen - Dick Deadeye and Ralph Rackstraw - Phil Enzie as Boatswain Bill Bobstay and Ralph Miller as Becker, the Carpenter's Mate. This year's Operetta was considered the best in many a year. - Clee Club has been a memorable ex- perience during 1948-49. TOP PHOTO ' Bottom Row: D. Goris, H. Campbell, R. Ferris, D. Boyce, R. Albion didnlt do too well - dropping all but one game. The locals defeated Eden Central by a score of 13-12.
