Opening the symposium, which was funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, were addresses by Arnold W. Ravin (above), professor of biology at University of Chicago, and F. Clarke Fraser, one of North America’s most distinguished geneticists. Other addresses were de¬ livered by Paul Ramsey, theologian of Christian ethics and social theory, and Margery Shaw, president-elect of the Genetics Society of America and expert on legal issues in medicine. Four panels discussed the scientific controversies, the social, economic and cultural implications of genetic control, the ethical dimensions of the new genetics, and legal aspects of the field. Participants were Fraser, Ravin, Ramsey, Thomas Worthy, research associate in human gene¬ tics and development at Columbia University; Howard Brody, depart¬ ment of human development at Michigan State; Harold M. Schmeck, Science correspondent for the New York Times; Roy D. Schmickel, professor of pediatrics and human genetics at the University of Michi¬ gan; H. Lynn Jondahl, state representative from the 59th District; Rob¬ ert M. Veatch, senior associate for medical ethics at the Institute of So¬ ciety, Ethics, and the Life Science; John M. Brundage, Calhoun Coun¬ ty juvenile court judge; Barbara J. Culliton, assistant news editor of Science magazine; Phillip R. Reilly, research fellow in law, science and medicine at Yale University; and John N. Vournakis, assistant profes¬ sor of biology at Syracuse University. A special committee, chaired by Russell Aiuto, associate professor of biology, spent more than a year planning the symposium. Douglas Fraser spoke at Albion in February, several months prior to his election as president of the United Auto Workers. His appearance was sponsored by Omicron Delta Epsilon, the economics honorary. Throughout the academic year, the visual arts department sponsorec exhibitions of various art media. Margaret Mead, psychologist, teacher, lecturer and writer spoke on the topic “Science and Cultural Values” before an audience of about 1200 in Goodrich Chapel. Mead touched upon subjects ranging from the atom bomb to the need for developing new energy sources. Calling for a unified earth, she concluded her lecture saying we must revise our image of the brother¬ hood of man. Vincent Bugliosi, prosecuting attorney in the Tate-Bianca murder trial and author of Helter Skelter, spoke on the unique aspects of the Manson slayings. He explained the history of the case and the strange nature of the Manson “family.” Howard Wolpe (left) and Congressman Garry Brown debated on campus in the midst of their November campaigning. 117 tkf ttLMon College ?uai«ls Thi DtPABT«iNT of Mofie Frbsbkt! Though never overshadowing the team ef¬ fort, individual honors showed the greatness of the 1976 squad. Defensive tackle Steve Spencer was named a Division III All-Ameri¬ can. Up and down throughout the year, team play became evident as two relay teams, 400 freestyle and 400 medley, became consistant winners. Individuals who highlighted the season included Trace Kline in short distance freestyle events, diver Mark Mainwaring, cap¬ tain Pete Anderson, and senior Paul Jocks. The women’s team fared better, finish¬ ing with a 3-3 record in the MIAA. Paced by senior Jan Slavens in the but¬ terfly and junior Merri Williams in the backstroke, the squad finished the year strong with a 93-25 trouncing of Alma. Basketball The Britons, led by senior forward Paul Cryderman, finished second in the M1AA behind a hot Calvin team with a 8-4 league record and a 16-7 record overall. With Cryderman, sophomore John Nibert, and junior Mike Williams all averaging 12.4 points per game along with Milton Barnes’ average of 13.9, the squad showed balance and coordinated team effort. The high point of the season came when Albion matched Calvin point for point through regulation time and two exciting overtimes before taking the lead for good, finishing with a 94- 90 victory. Later in the season Cal¬ vin revenged the loss with a seven point victory clinching their league championship. With only one starter graduating, the outlook for the Britons in 1977-78 is promising. Later the institution was established in Albion on land donated by Jesse Crowell, a leading Albion pioneer and benefactor. In 1841 the cornerstone was laid for the first building, and in 1843, the institution opened as the Wesleyan Seminary. In 1861 the power to con fer degrees was obtained and the school named Albion College. Support from the Methodist Church, a large endowment, and private sources have contributed to its growth as a strong liberal arts college.
