History of the Clloiss of 936
UR FOUR LONG years of hardships, jovs and sorrows are about over. The class
'36 will soon be a thing of the past. we will soon pass through the doors of Albia
High, some of us never to return again.
As wc now leak baclc on our four years of fruitful toil, many emotions assail us. We
will lay away our books to take up the wheel of life with a feeling of regret, 11015 that
we have failed, not that we fear the life ahead of us, but because we feel that our days of
achievement in Albia High School are over. We are reluctant to go because we know
that Albia High needs us to carry her through her battles.
As we loolc baclc on our many achievements, it is with just pride that we note how our
influence was felt by all. The prowess of our athletes has 'often brought victory to the
Red and Blue in all branches of athletics, and the loss of the graduates will be a heavy
blow to Albia High. Our achievements in dramatics and music were outstanding. Many
seniors had their place in the band which was the best Albia High has ever lcnown. Some
of our class members were also talented with vocal ability and contributed a very important
part to all musical entertainments.
And then we have never lost thought of the one great thing for which we are all hereg
we have applied ourselves diligently to our books and have, after a fashion, wrestled from
them a great deal of knowledge and wisdom as our list of names on the Honor Roll has
testified.
The many organizations gof which the seniors were a part were more successful this
year than any other Albia High has ever witnessed. Some of our prominent class mem-
bers were noted for their ability as leaders.
There have been many magnificent, banquets given in the gmynasium of Albia High
in the past years, but the one given by the class of '36 has far surpassed the rest in
splendor and beauty.
We feel that our presence, felt since the fall of '32, will be missed. Wfe feel that it
will be hard to 511 the empty places that we leave, but we have hopes that in the dark, dim
future, there may be another class that will, to some extent, fill them. As for the class of
'36, we loolc forward to the future with glowing ambitions, for we lcnow that the future
holds greater opportunity whereby we may distinguish ourselves.
Our high school days are nearly o'er,
The class of '36 will he here no more,
But the achievements of this great band
Will as an example, always stand.

Junior Class
E ENTERED A. H. S. in the glorious year of 1933 as freshmen, and only freshmen,
but even then we were noted for our high scholastic and athletic honors attained
under our president, Steve Miletich.
As so homores, we or anized with Bill Fl nn as resident and were led throu h a

year that will long be remembered for our achievements in music, athletics, dramatics, and
scholarship.
Another year older and with Bob Samuel as our Junior president. We played major
parts in attaining some of the highest honors in music, scholarship, and athletics that have
ever been bestowed on dear old A. l-I. S.
We produced a great success in our play "The Nut Farm," and as the year's end
grew near, the seniors were our guests in the "grand finale" of the season, the "Junior-
Senior Banouetf'
And so we re are to enter into another romisin ear, with ho es that the future
P P g Y P
will be as successful as the past.

Sophomore Class
S t'FRIGl-ITENED Freshmen" we entered Albia High School in the year of '34 to
become members. As usual we were the victims of many pranlcs and much criticism,
but in spite of this, we loyally stood by our school in athletics, music, dcclam, and scholastic
1
nonors.
Now as the sophomore class of '35 and '36 we have become prominent members. This
year one of the girls of our class, Eunice Dellfloss, won second place as a Valentine queen.
We have three boys who received letters in football this year, they are, Maurice Olson,
Homer Wilsoii, and Fred Christensen. Homer Wilson was on the second all-conference
team. Also three boys played basketball, lwut none received a letter for that sport. Three
other students, Jacob Cozad, Dolores Bettis, and Grace Feehan did well in declam, and we
are very proud of them. Many other members took part in music and the various organiza-
tions of the school.
There are about one hundred and thirty in our class. We had a grand time at our
party that took place in April. Now that we have a good start we expect to do more for
our school in the following two years.

BAND
URING THE YEARS 1935 and 1936, the A. H. S. hand has progressed rapidly.
Under the splendid guidance of .cur leader, Dale Carifn, these two years have been
the most outstanding we have ever known. One full period a day is given to the band in
order that it may continue to improve as the years go bv.
During the past year the band played at all our home games, and several times they
performed on other fields.
This years, also, they entered the sub-district contest at Grinnell and won first place.
Evelyn Bernstein played a baritone solo and she, too, won hrs: place. The marching band
rated superior at Centerville in the district state contest and thus won the right to represent
Albia at Iowa City. These honors pr-ave, not only to us, but to everyone, that the efforts the
band put forth, and are continuing to put forth, are very worthwhile.
The band has cooperated in every way and has given many splendid entertainmentsg
therefore weare proud of every member and also the leader, Mr. Caris.
Giifrllss' Gllee Clliuih
'HE VOCAL GROUPS have played quite an important role in the school life this
year. For instance, at Christmas time a very appropriate Cantata was presented which
all who attended enjoyed immensely.
Under the directorship of Miss Miller, the glee clubs were represented at the district
contest in Grinnell, by various vocal solos of masculine and feminine members.
At different times, the club had control of Chapels, in which they sang and entertained
the audience.
The glee club worked hard to present the Spring Festival, which was a gala event
to all who tool: part, as well as to those who attended.
Witli Ruth Watt as president and Helen Elswiclc as secretary-treasurer, the members
had some very enjoyable parties and entertainments.

about once a month. At the meetings they have an important citizen of the town speak to
them on different subjects which are interesting and worthwhile
The Hi-Y has its own basketball team, and often plays other teams in the school.
They hold several social functions during the year, and all the boys belonging attend

HE GIRLS' ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION is organizd for the purpose of creating
interest among the girls for sports. Basketball, lcittenball, volley ball. declc tennis,
ariel dart and other sports have been popular among the girls during the past year. Tourna-
ments are played at the end of the season in all these games and the girls competing receive
points and are thus eligible for a G. A. A. letter.
During the past year the G. A. A. has given two splendid entertainments. The iii-st
presented in the gym as a chapel, and the second as an exhibition at night. The girls
taking part gave different types of dances, others excellent tumbling acts, and still others
played exhibition games.
The G. A. A. also sponsors what are known as play nights. Every girl belonging to
the organization is invited to the gym for a lunch and to play any game that she chooses.
These nights have proved very successful during the past year.
The money that the G. A. A. earns is spent for new equipment, so that there will be
a variety of games for the girls. During the past year we have added Slll.1iTlC board, ariel
dart, and dcclc tennis to our list of games.

Girl. Reserve
'HE GIRL RESERVE is a very important organization in Albia High School. Dur-
ing the past year it has done much in the way of promoting social companionship
among the girls.
During the Christmas season they sponsored the annual kid party. Each girl hrought
a small child and a gift. The evening was spent in entertaining children, who enjoyed them-
selves immensely. These parties have always proven successful. At Christmas, also, the
organization presented a beautiful chapel.
Inter in the season, in co-operation with the G. A. A. the Colonial Ball was held in
the gym. The girls dressed in colonial garments, danced the minuet and all who attended had
an enjoyable evening.
In April, the Mother-Daughter banquet was held. This is an annual event. Speeches
are given, a program is presented, and the mothers are entertained with a perfect evening.
Last summer the G. R. sent Pauline Freed, accompanied by Miss Reddish, to the
national G. R. conference held at Powers Lake, Xvisconsin. They received new ideas for the
organization which were used and proved highly successful.

I-'IE FRENCH CLUB this year has been very interesting. As usual, at the begin-
ning of the year, initiation took place, and the French I students were seen with their
faces painted and wearing French berets and smocks. During the year many French songs
are learned and then sung at the meetings.
In the spring, a gala event took place when the Club held their party. It was all done
in French style and everyone felt French. It was a great success.
Some students correspond with French students and find this very interesting.
In late April the two French classes exhibited some line French specimens. Some had
note hooks containing interesting scenes in France, others, important Cathedrals or other
buildings carved out of soap.
The French Club is very popular and we know it will continue to he so.

HE STUDENTS interested in normal work belong to this club. The regular meet-
ings are once a month, where a program is presented, and the important business
discussed.
In the fall the seniors initiate the juniors into the club, the latter being forced to wear
funny hats and aprons in school, for a whole day. This day, however, is always greatly
enjoyed.
The organization in the past year held several social functions, a Christmas party was
held at Miss Dewey,s home, and later a picnic at the city park:
A2 Thanksgiving time the Club presented a chapel, and those who teok part were very
success u .

Echoes of the Red and Blue
URING THE PAST year our newspaper page was as popular as ever. The goings
on of the week would came out every Nlonday evening and everyone would grab the
paper to see if he or she had been mentioned.
The two famous columns, "The Echo" and "Wliy? O, Wl1y?', by "Spyguy" caused a
great deal of talk around school, and news that wasn't supposed to get out, everyone
knew. However it was all in fun, and it was fun.
The staff had its usual party and everyone had a good time.

Iuniiorfgeniior Banquet 9
On May 2 the knights and ladies arrayed in their finery assembled to attend the Junior-
Senior "Tournament"
The gym was beautifully decorated, thanks to the fruitful labours of the hard-working
Juniors and their faithful sponsors, and the theme was the mediaeval age.
The clever program carried gout the theme with King Arthur, toastmaster-Aldo Della
Vedova, Queen of Beauty-Helen Carruthers, Chivalry-Mr. D. O. Smith, Lancers-Dancers,
Joust and Tournament-Elizabeth Hassman, Knight-Mac Schleier, Heralds-Girls' Trio.
The toast program was followed by an evening of dancing, and we are confident that
the banquet was one -of the nicest events in our four years of high school life.

IKE THE BAND, the orchestra is becoming better every clay.
Several times during the last few months, they have proved to us what splendid
work they are doing. First, they presented a concert in the new gym, which was highly prais-
ed hy all who heard it. They also entertained at our school plays, and were recommended
highly.
New instruments are being purchased for artists who wish to show their talents. In the
last year a hell lyre, a xylophone and a kettle drum have heen added. Grace Miller has
very successfully mastered the bell lyre, which is a very important addition, both to the band,
and tl1e orchestra.
Vife hope that the achievements of the orchestra, in the future, will he as successful as
they have been in the past.
Boys' Gllee Cluh
Nliss Margaret lVliller has worked faithfully this year and has turned out a very promis-
ing group of vocalists.
In Marcli Vern Rowles entered the sub-district contest at Grinnell and was rated excel-
lent. Other splendid voices are those of Dave Myers, Stuart Stroham, and Wayne Thompf
son, all of whom sang solos in the Christmas Cantata presented in the gym.
To reward them for their good work Miss Miller gave them a party. They brought
guests, and everyone had a good time. We hope that the boys will continue this growing
interest in vocal work, and so build up Hner and better glee clubs.

l.lRING ITS NINE YEARS of existence, the commercial club has become increas-
ingly valuable in this department.
The cluh is composed of two separate divisions. The O. A. T. fOrder of Artistic
Typistsl and the O. G. A. fOrder of Gregg artists.j
The O. A. T. takes care of all typing awards, including Competent Typists Certificates
for speed and accuracy, and Junior and Senior O. A. T. awards, all issued from the New
York office.
Included in the O. G. A. division are the shorthand specimens, which each student pens
to send into the New York olhce for a membership certihcate. Of course, each student hopes
for a gold pin. These specimens are also entered in a national contest.
We get a good deal of enjoyment from our competition in these organizations, as well
as worthwhile help in our school work.

U4 FTER A SUCCESSFUL 1934 season in which the Demons captured the Southeii
Iowa Conference Championship title, a determined bunch of boys reported for prac-
tice, September 3, 1935, under a new coach, John Sexton, who replaced Wfilliam Parisho as
head coach at Albia High. '
VVith only two weeks of practice before the first game the boys worked hard to get in
shape for their first encounter with the Ottumwa Bulldogs, Having lost a number of regulars
by graduation in the spring of '34 Sexton had to find new men to fill the shoes of Lee, Della
Vedova, Gantz, Morrow, and others. But luclc was with the coach and he quickly found
out char Murphy, Saunders, Palmer, Palmer, Olson, and others were capable of the posi-
tions left open.
Friday night, September 13, a fast, snappy, determined eleven of Red and Blues came
out under the lights of the Albia gridiron to oppose their old foes-Ottumwa. Outweighted
by several pounds, the Demons leolced comparatively small beside the white giants from O.
H. S. The Demons fought hard and made tremendous drives tzward the Ottumwan's goal
only to fumble or be stopped when a touchdown seemed certain. The game ended 12-O, but
showed that with practice che Demons would be a hard team to conquer.
49
After suffering defeat from the Ottumwa Bulldogs the Demons met the Melcher eleven
on the Albia gridiron, September 27. An entirely different class of boys were playing their
first real game for the citizens of Albia, for after two weeks of strenuous practice, the boys
were willing to tackle anything. The first quarter was well fought by both teams but fum-
bling and right defensive playing held both teams scoreless. But early in the second quarter
the Demons made a powerful drive to the Melclier goal line. Campbell broke through right
tackle for forty-seven yards and from the six yard line Frye crashed through center for the
first marlcer. The Demons came back strong in the third quarter, and threatened the visitors
goal more than once. Then Ed Murphy, the fightin' Irish, intercepted a Melclier pass and
ran 40 yards for Albia's second touchdown. Melcher also scored in the third and again
threatened in the fourth only to be stopped by the gun.
October 4, the Demons played their first conference game at Osceola and behind the
playing of Frye, Campbell, Murphy, and Hollingsworth, the Demons marched to an easy
victory. The Demons staged a drive in the first quarter which netted their hrst touchdown
and they scored two more markers before the game ended.
On October ll, the Demons met the Fairfield eleven who, under the leadership of Cap-
tain Kelleher defeated the Demons 20 to 0. The fighting spirit which had progressed so
rapidly the past few weeks had suddenly come to an abrupt end. Fumbling and tough breaks
in favor of the Fairfield eleven enabled the visitors to score three markers before the last
quarter was finished.
Although the Demons were defeated, the boys fought madly the last half and threatened
the visitors several times, but a fumble or no gains stopped the boys when a touchdown
seemed certain.
Friday, October 18, the Demons defeated Knoxville, 12 to 6, at the latter's stadium.
VU ith a tremendous first quarter spurt the Demons scored after Frye had carried the pigslcin
to the Knoxville 13 yard line, and from there, Campbell plunged over right guard for the
first touchdown.
The boys from Albia again scored in the third quarter after Campbell returned a punt
forty-five yards to Knoxville Z5 yard line, and from there he again broke through right
guard for a touchdown. The Knoxville eleven netted their only touchdown late in the last
quarter. Fumbling probably cost the Demons two more markers.
October 18th, they journeyed to Centerville to play their oldest rivals the Centerville
Reds. '
The first half was a hard fought battle between both teams, but in the last two minutes
of the second quarter a blocked Demon lcick was recovered by Centerville on the Albin six
yard line, but again the Demons held and punted to their own 35 yard line, where Center-
ville began a last minute drive to the Albia's two yard line, from that point Wliisler crashed
throughfor the Reds, first touchdown. Both teams came back strong in the second half,
but a quick kick, a pass, and a beautiful demonstration of open field running by Wfhisler
gave Centerville another touchdown. In the fourth quarter the Demons came out fighting
and made a sixty-five yard drive for a touchdown.
Wednesday afternoon, October 20, the Demons swamped Bloomfield 39 to 0. Camp-
bell brolce loose in the first quarter for a 55 yard run which gave Albia her first touchdown.
Campbell again raced 50 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter. Frye, Palmer, Hogg,
also scored for the Demons.
The Demons played the last game of their 1935 season against Chariton, and many of
the boys were playing their last game for Albia High School. The game was a hard fought
battle from start to Hnish with both teams playing a tight defensive game while the offense
was only gigantic at times. The Demons threatened the Chariton goal more than once but
were held by a stone wall of fighting C. I-I. S. boys.
Chariton finally broke loose in the third quarter and scored on a beautifully executed
triclc play around right end. . They' also converted the extra point and gave them a 7 to 0
lead which they maintained the rest of the game.

'HE 1936 ALBIA high school basketball team wfnning Z0 games and losing four during
the season just closed, compiled the finest record ever made by a local high school
cage five, the best previous mark being 17 victories and 5 defeats for the 1932 team. V
The present team won the Southern Iowa Conference title with only one defeat in eight
games and reached the district tournament hnal, setting an Albin record of advancement in
the state elimination series.
Witli a team composed of three lettermen and a promising group of sophomores and
juniors with which to form the nucleus of his 1935-36 basketball squad, Coach Sexton opened
the season with one of the strongest teams which the Southern Iowa Conference had to offer.
There were only two seniors on the varsity squad but they will be important losses next sea-
son. Capt. Russell Love and Tommy Collins, forwards, were the tcarn's highest scorers and
Sexton will be hard pressed to find a pair to replace them. Mileticli, Saunders, Flynn, Wfood-
ard, and Felton were soon found to be seasoned warriors at the game, and their passing and
breaking attack combined with their deadly accuracy of hitting the hoop were qualities feared
by all of their foes.
Love finished as leading scorer of the season, with 196 points in 24 games, an average
of more than eight points per game. Capt. Love was also chosen as one of the most outstand-
ing forwards in Southern Iowa and was given a place on the Southern Iowa All Star 'Cage
Team. Collins and Nliletich also received honorable mention. His expert instruction coupled
with the "do or dien spirit that pervaded from Coach on down to the last sub are the principal
factors in their remarkable success.

I N THE EARLY part of September 1935 the S. I. C. Committee announced that there
would be held at Centerville, Iowa, a tennis tournamentg those participating would be
Albia, Centerville, Chariton, Bloomfield.
Russell Love and Harry Bragg were the Albia High School representatives.
In the iirst single match Love defeated the Bloomfield representative 6-0, 6-0, and
showed the spectators how tennis was really played. In fact his opponent hardly got a smell
of the ball. In the second single match Bragg defeated Ellis of Centerville 6-1, 6-1. The next
match Love defeated Clouse of Centerville 6-4, 6-3, and again displayed his skill by turning
aside Ce11tervillc's Number One man. The next match Bragg drew a bye and Love played
Bennett of Chariton and easly deiicated the ace of the Chariton courts 6-4, 6-4 to be
proclaimed Champion of Number 1 singles. Bragg then played Clark of Chariton and
their match lasted one hour and forty-five minutes. Clark won the hrst set 6-4, Bragg
took the next set which was a deuce set 8-6, and Clark won the last set which was also a
deuce set 7-5. Clark was Number 2 Singles Champion and Bragg was second,
Love and Bragg then defeated Chariton 6-4, 6-3 in the doubles and then defeated Cen-
terville in doubles 6-2, 6-4 to cinch the championship for Albia High School.

Golf
In the Southern Iowa Conference Golf Tournament held in Chariton early in the fall of
1935, the Charition foursome defeated Albia by a small margin to talce lirst honors. Albin
Hnishcd second and Osceola and Centerville finished third and fourth respectively.
The Albia teamvmembers were Bill Flynn, Quentin Fuhs, Micky Olson, and Bob Flynn,
and they were coached by Fred Geneva. Although they lost this match, their sportsmanlike

WISE SAYIN GS
Hereys to women: Noted for untold ages.
The old fashioned woman who darned

socks her darned husband. A
There isn't much to be seen in a little
town but what you hear makes up for it.
High heels, according to Christopher
Morley, were invented by a woman who had
been kissed on the forehead.
It need not be assumed that the young
bride worships her husband because she
places burnt offerings before him three times
a day.
One way to keep your friends is not to'
give them away.
Members of the younger generation are
alike in many disrespects.
I decided that no vice is so bad as advice.
Steve: Is there any soup on the bill of
fare?
Waiter: There was, sir, but I wiped it
off.
I don't suppose you don't know of nobody
who dank want to hire nobody to do noth-
ing, don't you?
Yes, I don't. '
Gordon was playing bandit, and for
some time had been staggering around as if
badly wounded.
Neighbor: Hey! Gordon, it's about time
to die-why don't you fall down?
Gordon: I can't. I'm not allowed to. If
I had on my old pants, I'd 'a been dead
long ago.
