This year we welcome
our new superintendent,
I. Iohn Halverson, to Al-
bert Lea.
Though he has only
been with us a short time,
we students and faculty
are well acquainted with
his likeable personality,
his tair consideration for
others, his superior judg-
ment, his genial humor,
and his sincere encour-
agement.
Already the school is
advancing. Superintend-
ent Halverson personally
publicized all the school
performances to the down-
town business men. He
heartily cheered our ath-
letic teams - not from
the bleachers, but right
from the players' bench-
es. Warm applause came
from the students when
Mr. Halverson gave his
approval of moonlight so-
cials.
I. lohn Halverson is well
qualified to be our su-
perintendent. His record
shows that he was super-
intendent at three other
schools previously, they
are at Excelsior, Chaska,
and Ashby. He started his
career at Foley, Minneso-
ta, as an instructor oi
English, mathematics, and
science,
He was educated at St.
Olaf College, Northfield,
Minnesota, where he re-
ceived his B.A. degree.
He later earned his M. A,
degree at the University
of Minnesota where he
has also done further
post-graduate work.

Though the school year may last only nine m th f
on s or the students, Senior High School
Principal Leonard Blomquistfs school tasks are year-round,
The day after school is out Mr, Blomquist must start planning for the September open-
ing. Small duties take up part of his time, such as ordering new supplies His main assi
, gn-
ment during the vacation months however is to make out the sched l f

high school student, taking into consideration the students needs and abilities
A . . , . .
nother great problem for him is writing recommendations and sending credits to our
boys in the armed services At graduation particularly there a
. , . re many students who come
to Principal Blomquist for personal advice, guidance in choosing occupations, and for inf
formation about certain colleges,
Mr Blomguist has encouraged the organization f l
t o new c ubs and activities. For proof,
consider that he has organized orchestras, directed a band, coached football, basketball,
baseball, declamatory and debate teams, directed class plays, sponsored Hi-Y organiza-
tions, and was co-sponsor of the first local Honor Society in Albert Lea.

This year fans cheered to the leadership of Jim Counsell, Annette Christianson and Don Carlson. Jim and
Annette are graduating but Don will be back next year as a sophomore. One of the biggest cheer hits was the
Norwegian yell, "Ve du glide," originated, it is rumored, by none other than Mr. Blomquist.

Al, here are some pictures of girls'
sports during the last year.
This is the first year that a special
section has been devoted to the girls'
sports in the high school. We hope
you like it.
The G.A.A. is the only organization
for the promotion of girls' sports in
the senior high. Under the direction
of Miss Hansen the girls have partiqi-
pated in four major sports during the
year, speedball, basketball, volleyball,
and kittenball.
Individual sports are encouraged
with many taking part in bowling,
skating, hiking, and table tennis.

The operetta, "ln An Old Kentucky Garden" Cabovey given February 11, 1944, is
representative of the many fine musical productions presented in the Albert Lea High
School.
A portrayal of an old aristocratic Southern plantation family, this operetta contains
many of Stephen Collins Foster's finest songs, including "Jeannie with the Light Brown
Hair," "Old Folks at Home," and "Beautiful Dreamer."
Lovely old-fashioned costumes of wide hoop-skirts, fringed shawls, peg-topped trous-
ers, cutaways, high hats and colorful Negro dances provided atmosphere for this roman-
tic story.
L. J. Emmons had charge of the music direction, while Mrs. Eleanor Haaland
coached the dramatic parts. Miss Helene Hanson supervised the dances.
