f l. '1 - ,ai .a 1 Traditionally the role of a destroyer escort has been one of convoy screening or task force escort in a primarily hostile subma- rine environment. It wasnit until the esca- lation of the Vietnamese war that the need for a highly versatile weapons system capa- ble of meeting the challenge on all fronts of modern warfare, became readily appar- ent. The cruiser destroyer force of the U. S. Navy proved to be more than worth the challenge, tasked to perform such roles as ASW, carrier escort, Naval Gunfire Sup- port, Search and Rescue Missions to name but a few. But then again, a ship is only as good as its crew, and the Destroyerman of today proved themselves worthy of the American trust.
