faculty and to the Student body The student body president presides at the meetings

tons of paper expected to be collected practlcally all of the goal has been reached
There IS no regular t1me for the meetmgs They are called when something comes up
maktng 1t necessary lor a meetlng Banquets and partles have been grven by the Band
Boosters Club for the beneltt of the band members
Other dutles of the club mclude looking after the unlforms making sure they are clean

After a slow start s hool pep was brought to a hgh mark under three exoenenced
senlor yell leader Cec1l lenkms lerry Haas and Betty Bates Later Bob Govro a
sophomore was elected to help carry on ln the future An enttrely new schedule of yells
was worked out and wa of a var1ety that no other school m the valley had shown The
velts were put on a ba rs of gesturmq and clowmsh acts by the yell leaders IH order

The old wild west exploded ln real western fashion on March l0 when the Quill and
Scroll oresented a two act meller drammer entitled GUNS A BLAZIN written and di
rected by Zed Merrill and Ed Tempel The cast included all boys who took the feminine
as well as the masculine roles
The following characters had mayor parts in the show Bill Lance Easy Zarones Ze
Merrill Ed Tempel Dennis Ford Cecil Ienkins Bud Spencer Bill Ewing Al l-laasman ack

lim Iohnston This production proved to be one of the funniest comedies that the high
school has ever produced

March lU marked the day of the birth of a new program devised to provide recrea
week end nights A plan was tried successfully whereby each class sponsored the pro
gram on different nights
All teen agers were welcome and any type of entertainment wa found in the gari
line besides the usual dance line A special program was also worked out each night
as an added attraction
The officers were Cecil lenkins president Dick Held vice p esident Barbara Anderson
secretary and Carley Carpenter treasurer
The Board of Directors acted as representatives of each class They included Sen

March 31 rn the Albany Hrgh School gym was the scene of the Sprrng Prom presented
by the Senlor cla s Thts also was a formal affalr at whrch Al Benmng and hrs band

Everyone was also danctng May 19 at the annual Senror formal prom Thrs 1s the year
ly dance of the school and only the lumors and the Senrors are admltted Last year the
lumor class gave a very pretty dance Wlfh Bob Platner and hrs orchestra from Oregon
State College The Senor class should be congratulated on the money they rarsed IH
order to secure thrs well known popular band
Every Tuesday and Thursday there was a noon dance tn the lower hall for anyone
who wrshed to dance The musrc was furnxshed by the school electrxc phonograph w1th
record sweet and swlng old and new brought by the students
Most of the dances were boys or grrls tag whrch were a lot of fun Srnce there was

ln these war times Albany High School has been more than outstanding in the war
effort.
During the spring term of last year a scrap metal drive was probably the most note-
worthy activity. The seniors collected 154 tons to cap first prize in a hot contestg the rumor:
were secondg the sophomores, third,
Other drives were the silk stocking drive, in which the Latin club brought in lUO0
:silk stockings, and a victory corsage sale to help with proceeds for the carnival The-we
corsaaes were made by the Latin Club Gnd were decorated with war tamps which nrtte

Last fall the l-li Y and l7 went prune picking The l7 won the conte t for pirk
ing nore prgnes than th H1 Y
That the F F A was very active this year was proved by the fact that the club picked
one thousand pounds of filberts pulled thirty five tons of car ots and harvested twenty
five tons of beets The members also won a regional food for vrctory contest
The band and the orchestra conducted a paper drive in which approxtmately fifty ton
waste paper were aathered
Ronald Ellison a rumor industrial art student made a pamphlet rack for the Albany
S O club which was highly appreciated
The student body ha gone out whole heartedly for all of the bond drive The Fourth
War Loan was the most successful with Albany High School going over it quota Al
bany Senior H gh School bought 3525 990 35 Cwhich alone was more than S1500 in eyce
of the entire county quotal
This year the P T A and the school have been grand about giving dances for the
students The students really appreciate thi for they ndust have time for relaxation
and dances are a fine recreation

mond High School and whlle there he became a tlve sport letterman Llntteld College
where he majored 1n physlcal educatlon and became a three year letterman 1n track
claxms h1m as an alumnus Before comtng to Albanv Mr Martm taught for two years
at Condor' and two year at Redmond he also spent three months ln the Merchant Mar1ne
Mr Martin was handtcaped by comtng here after school started but he has done a good

Mr Welbes known to all as Iohnny was born rn Portland He was a four sport letter
man whrle he was at Gresham H1gh School He graduated from Oregon State College
where he took an agncultural course
Mr Welbes taught at Dayton for two yecrs untrl he accepted the posrtton of agrx
Cultural teacher at Albany Hlgh Mr Welbes has been the Smith Hughes lnstructor here
for hve years and lh1S year he was also football coach He was short on rnatertal thls
