TO THE CLASS OF 1959: It is again my honor to be invited to submit this annual letter to SKULL. 4 Four years ago, upon matriculation, you ap- peared to be a rather heterogeneous aggregation of college students representing many colleges and states. Now, as you prepare to separate from your medical school with the highly coveted degree of Doctor of Medicine, the Class of 759 has acquired many characteristics of homogeneity and togetherness which will bind you in the life- long spirit of friendship regardless of your event- ual geographic distribution. As medical students at Albany Medical College, you have strengthened and expanded the scientific foundation developed during your previous years of formalized education through additional knowledge of the basic medical sciences. You have demonstrated the ability and the habit of applying basic principles in the diagnosis and management of the challenging problems en- countered in health and disease. Through per- sonal experience, you have acquired the practice t 2 'us of sound reasoning and critical judgment. It has X, ' .V E 4 j . t been your opportunity to gain a full understand- . -' g., ing of professional ethics. It is to be hoped that r t - ...mf each of you has grasped the importance of pre- -- serving a mind. ppen to judicial acceptance of . new knowledge as well as to dismissal of out- dated information. In addition to the develop- ment of professional competence, you have seen the importance of exercising the compassion, tolerance and missionary zeal necessary to demonstrate a true reverence for life. The changing world geography and social order as well as an aging population continually lead to the creation of new fields which demand medical graduates capable of adapting to meet the changing times. From your knowledge of the impact of one personality upon another, you are cognizant of the need to design the clinical structure of your medical career to include further study not only of the physics and chemistry of tissues but also of the emotional and social reactions of men during sickness and health. Your broad program here at the Albany Medical College has emphasized not only the understanding of human disease but also of the human beings who suffer its afiiictions. It must be that you take leave of your school with pride and the comforting feeling that it has enabled you to prepare yourselves to be able to modify the remaining medical superstructure, known as your medical career, by furnishing you with education of sound basic design and tools for wide application. It will also be most satisfying as you compare the experience you have had at Albany Medical College with that of graduates of other institu- tions whom you will meet at various times and places. lt is evident from what has been said that you have just completed the initial phase of your medical education. You alone, with the exception of certain specialty board requirements, will determine the extent and character of its continued development. The habit of enforced self-education and participation in postgraduate educational programs is the only insurance available against pathetic degradation into an outdated, uninformed practitioner. On behalf of the entire faculty, I take this occasion to commend the Class of '59 for its performance to date. We wish you the ultimate in happiness and success in the future and will be continually interested in your accomplishments. We sincerely hope that your periodic return visits to the Medical College will be frequent and pleasant ones. Most sincerely. Harold C. The class of 1959 has the distinction of being one of the groups that Dr. Frank Maxon has taught. It is not our aim in this Dedication to reiterate the many achieve- ments and honors of this line teacher and shrewd clinician. Our class, instead, wishes that this Dedication convey to Dr. Maxon our deep appreciation for his interest in us as students and our thanks for his untiring teaching efforts. It is difficult to communicate the aura a man of medicine has about him. A combi- nation of humor, an eye toward the unexpected, a boundless store of knowledge, and a sympathetic understanding of the studentis gropings toward knowledge, make Dr. Maxon the stimulating figure a medical student requires. Without his spark many subtleties.of physical diagnosis might not have been appreciated. From him we learned to be ever suspicious of the faint ripple of the skin, the unfamiliar breath sound, the pulse that does not bound true. His willingness and desire to give of himself and his time have left their mark on both heart and mind of our class. We could never forget his thoughtful pause as he waited for the student to digest the previous pearl, the corners of his mouth drawn back in a smile, his chin thrust forward. It is the thoughts that each member of this class has, and the appreciation that each of us feels, that in the last analysis serve as the reason for this dedication. To you, Dr. Frank Maxon, we offer these poor words as a symbol of our everlasting regard for your efforts and success. DR. FRANK C. MAXON, JR ' 6 ,ki 'Z 5' A my .1L,sfF,f ' . The class of 1959 began their physical therapy curriculum at Russell Sage College in September, 1955. Preparatory courses were taken at "Sage,' before the fourth .year of professional studies, started this past September at Albany Medical College DIYISIOU of Physical Therapy. Courses in the senior year included physiology, clinical medicine, neuro-anatomy, pathology, physics, tests and measurements and therapeutic exercise. Gross anatomy was taken here as '4Sage" Juniors. Practical application of the tech- niques and treatment procedures learned in massage, hydrotherapy, electrotherapy, goniometry, muscle testing and postural evaluation was possible by working wltlr each other and treating patients under supervision. A four week period of pre-cl1n1Cal observations at the various area hospitals was part of the first semester. i Practical experience as physical therapists is gained during clinical affiliations for an additional twenty week period. Each student goes to five different afiiliatlng h0S- pitals or rehabilitation centers, spending approximately four weeks at each 3.iTll1atl0n- Affiliations are selected from an approved list, including those in the area: Albany Hospital, C. P. Center, St. Peter's, V. A. and '4Sunny Viewv: and others: N. Y. State Rehabilitation Center, West Haverstrawg Institute for Physical Medicine and Rehabill- tation, N. Y. U.-Bellevue Medical Center, Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation, N. .I -3 Hartford Rehabilitation Center, Conn., Strong Memoral Hospital, Rochester, Burke Foundation, White Plains, and N. Y. State Public Health. . In September, after clinical affiliations, the class receives their Bachelor of SCICUCG degree from Russell Sage College and their Certificate in Physical Therapy fr0IT1 Albany Medical College Division of Physical Therapy. After graduation, each member of the class assumes full status as an active member of the American Physical Therapy Association, ready to accept professional responibility in her chosen field. l 3 3 1 K v i DEDICATION ,1:"", f-M, if ,f Mrs. Anne Rose As our student days at A. We could not forget your bright sense of humor or your ready smile. Thank you for your eeaseless understanding and just for being what you are. Of all the memories we take with us from A. M. Then sat for a moment And bowed her head Over the little white desk- "I wonderi' said she to herself, "after All, Am I really doing my 'best?', Perhaps I could have begun the day With. a brighter Cheerier smile And Answered the bells With 'LRight Away" Instead of '4After Awhilef' V And I might have listened with sweeter grace To the story of SiX's Woes, She may be suffering more, perhaps More than Anyone knows. , And I might have refrained from the halfway frown '4You Could have done better today But oh! The Omnipotent One Seeing Your faults, does not forget The beautiful things you have done." HHe knows little nurse that you love your work, In this house of pain and sorrow. So gladly forgives the lack of today, For you will do better tomorrow? The nurse looked up with a grateful smile, "Tomorrow Iill make it right," Then Added a note in the order book, "Be good to them tonight." "ii """Lk' ' JEAN O'CONNELL "Jean,' "Not in the rewards, but in the strength to strive, the blessing lies.'7 LETTER T0 THE CLASS or 1959 Mrs. Verna Rolf Director of Health Services Dear Graduates of 1959, Each of you has so much behind you during these last few years-tears, laughter, apprehension, criticism, and most of all-many, many days filled to overflowing with busy duties on your flo0I'S and many cram packed hours with last minute preparation for papers and examinations. i No longer will you be told when to come in, when to sign in and out-when to be quiet. You are now professional young women chosen above all others. You must give of yourselves because that 15 what nursing means. It is not for the selfish person. You belong to an outstanding profession honored and revered by all. 'Who else sees life in all its stark reality-from the miracle moment of birth to the sad but beautiful peacefulness of death? You've been discouraged many times and certainly will be again but a little magic formula, Called the Golden Rule does wonders. Apply it when you feel like losing your temper in front a doctor Wl'10 seems unreasonable, when a patientis demand seems out of proportion to his illness, when the task assigned you seems impossible to accomplish. By remembering this-you will find that life seems to treat you a little more kindly-what you do for others comes back to you a thousand fold. There is just one other word that I hope and pray none of you ever forget and that is the word Hcompassionf' ltls meaning should remain with us for no other word can describe nursing so C0mPletely' To be compassionate doesfnot mean that you are sentimental or weak, but rather that you are strong- Compassion means you understand and accept yourself and others . . . that you judge not too harshly. Compassion, above all, means never forgetting the little kindnesses, both in word and deed. You Wlll find you like yourself a little better too. Never forget, you are caring for human beings who have heartS and souls, as Well as sick bodies. The key to the future is in your hands-use it wisely. It has been my privilege and honor to know each of you. God bless you. JOYCE COLVIN 'gJ0y" O R CLASS HISTORY Pack the car and all hop in, We're off to nursing school. Dad knew the way to take us that day That September 4-th, crisp and cool. Cars loaded with toys and pictures of boys Found their way to the residence door. We unloaded right there, then headed for the stair And climbed to the top fifth floor. It's off to Freshman Camp, they said, Take plenty of blankets, itis cold! It was cold, all right, that whole weekend through, Though we warmed right up to our faculty, and Rosalie, We met them all in corridor and hall, When we came back to settle down with books. And the wide-eyed Freshmen, with beanies askew Could be found in all corners and nooks. The subjects, we found, soon got us down, How would we ever pull through? Anatomy, physiology, chemistry, p. a., And nursing arts, just to mention a few. After studying hard, we reached our first goal For tomorrow our capping takes place. lt's a night to cheer, ,and drink our root beer! Bring on another case! Let's "bunny hop" down thru the hall, someone said. We did, and later wondered, who's fault? A step on the stair, we scattered everywhere, Kay, may I introduce Miss Ault! Proudly we wore our caps the next night And our Moms and Dads smiled with joy. It's more strawberry punch and brownies from lunch, Then homeward bound on vacation, oh, boy! We came back to pass meds and make more beds, Our studies seemed harder than before The time just iiew, for we were then working, too, And we were knocking on our junior year door. It,s across the street to Bolton Hall, The juniors came by the scores, Looking forward to nights, evenings and Hashlights, And work on the specialty fioors. Psychiatry, the o. r., and obstetrical floor Onward we did plod, The nights on 6th floor, a child behind each door- Did you feel a bit closer to God? A new September brought our senior pin And a vacation for all on Hun. Will studies never end and graduate work begin? No, for now Senior duties have begun. At times it seems, we lose sight of our dreams And our spirits are lower than low, But they mount high again, and with new heart we b When we realize-just a few months to go!! The money's rolling in-thirty dollars a month! And how shall we spend all those "greens"?! The diamonds galore on the gals on each fioor, Indicate oodles of weddings, it seems. Graduation plans are in the making- White Dinner-Rose Planting-Senior Ball, Graduate uniform. white, pin gleaming and bright. Eagerly we look forward to them all. With eyes to the future and heads held high, We look forward to what will be. But our three years here, through sorrow and cheer, Will be cherished in each memory. too. egin, 6 ELEANORP "Light is t heart? S ,, 3165!-7-rgv1ij' ,l,, .zu ,YM ,,-lx, ,..-ft, , . Then, after internship, will come the exciting but exacting task of building a profitable practice. A good bank during this period of career building is a good friend. Mechanics and Farmers offers the medical student and young doctor every helpful banking service. A checking account is of great assistance in keeping the budget balanced. Personal loans can tide you over lean internship periods, finance your car at our low 34.95 rate or help you get started in private practice. Come in to either of our two conveniently located offices, at 63 State Street or 1084 Madison Avenue, and talk to an officer about opening an account. And in the Editor's Letter, the Editor tradi- tionally surveys the preceding four years .and makes sage comments thereupon, expresses hopes for the future, thanks his teachers, his yearbook staff, any sundry personnel which come to mind, his parents, his guardian angel, his fairy Godmother, his classmates and friends. But mere words cannot express the improbability of the past four years, the organized disorder which is a medical school. Thus was conceived this year- book, whose purpose it is to remind those who are leaving of those remarkable times, and to remind those who remain of our segment of the passing scene. The making of a yearbook is often a thankless, arduous task and Indecision and ffor want of a better wordl discooperation are traditionally the order of the day. But never has an editor been blessed with a more remarkable staff. Without benefit of a single staff meeting, this marvelous crew smoothly created this album, which is our thanks to those who at best tried to make us students of the art of medicine. Your editor is grateful to Mr. Maury Green and Miss Evelyn Meliti for extraordinary services rendered and particularly to Managing Editor, Howard Dworkin, and the entire editorial board, without whom this book would yet be a pretty thought.
