1956 THRONATEESKA Albany High School Albany, GeorgiaWe, the THRONATEESKA Staff of '56, present to you, the students, the record of a year's work and play. The purpose of our annual is to give our student body a reminder of a part of the best years of our lives — high school. We hope that in the years to come when you look back through your annual, many fond memories will return. We leave behind us the joyous years which we have spent at our Alma Mater in this, the 1956 THRONATEESKA.The United States and Georgia flags are proudly raised.Someone is always late.CLASSE:BEGINTHROUGH THE DAY Even with the blaring of the trumpets . . . Some Others learn the rudiments of geometry.WITH INTERESTING ANI ■ English in its most complicated form Visual Education—a favorite form of learningEXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES Cheerleaders practice diligently Coaches confer on season’s prospectsend a busy day Twirlers try for perfection. Overtime on the practice field Rehearsals never end.ALWAYS A NEED FOR COUNSELING . . AND SOMETIMES FOR DISCIPLINE!When we needed someone to inspire us to study so that we might prove ourselves worthy of being students, you led us to study the Latin language because you were interested in our cultural development. W'hen we wanted to boast of our excellent chapel programs, we always pointed to yours which were presented so well. When we needed an encouraging word, you were ready to listen patiently and to advise carefully. Yes, when we thought of one who loved our school with a love that has never been equalled, we looked to you and your many years of untiring, faithful service which you have so unselfishly given to our school. When we looked for kindness, sincerity, understanding, sympathy for others, and a deep Christian love for one’s fellow man, we looked to you, our very dear friend and teacher for you exemplify each of them in an abundance which we have not found surpassed. After considering and recognizing the ideal woman’s traits, qualities, and characteristics which are so vividly seen in your life, we, the 1956 THRONATEESKA staff, with deep devotion, sincere gratitude, and loving friendship dedicate to you, Mrs. Bessie Turner Dobbins, our yearbook, the 1956 THRONATEESKA.DOUGHERTY COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION First row, left to right: H. The Tribe copped :beir first three games from Grady, Columbus, and R. E. Lee before they fell to the Grangers. Things looked dim when they followed this loss by one to Valdosta, and then, after topping Baker, they were defeated by underdog Jordan. But the Redmen showed what kind of a team they really were by climbing out of the ditch and rolling over their last three foes. As expected, they trampled Commercial, but they startled the experts when they felled first place Lanier with a 13-7 blow. The Indians then made it a third place finish when they nipped Moultrie, 12-7. Coach Chappell Collin’s Squaws staggered through a rough 1955-1956 season. The team was hampered by the lack of strong reserves, but the girls fought hard in every contest. Carolyn Tolbert dominated the scoring throughout the season. In one game she netted 30 points, and in another she racked up 26 of her team’s 29 markers. As the season progressed, Glenda Eubanks began to shine and teamed with Tolbert to form a fine one-two punch. Margaret Barbre’s experience at guard was a valuable asset, as was Barbara Ann Davis’ speed at the same position. Ada Lou Perry, another guard, was a sparkplug on defense. Joan Land’s height and Faye Perry’s steadiness sparked the team at forward. Lottie Land, Yvonne Hatcher, Shirley Austin, Patsy Smith, Martha Cheney, Kathleen Howard, Shirley Carter, Jo Ann Howell, and Jean Twilley rounded out the rest of the squad. The Squaws lost four straight games until they finally vanquished Edison in an upset, 46-40. Patsy Smith Faye Swain Carolyn Tolbert Jean T-willey Betty WillisRoger Aycock Robert Denson H. C. The Tribe was picked to fight it out with Lanier, Columbus, Thomaston, and Moultrie. The five returning lettermen were Captain Jimmy Wester (6’ 1”), John Huie (6’ 2”), Frank Orgel (6’ l' J, Robert Denson (6’ 1”), and H. C. Douthit (6’ 1”). All five were seniors; and Wester, Huie, and Douthit had previously lettered two years, so the squad was blessed with experience. Moving in from out of state were Roger Aycock and Tommy Herndon. The 1954-1955 “B” team sent Jimmy McDonald, Milledge White, Durward Pennington, Dan McIntyre, and Jamil Saba to the crew. After dropping their first Region 1-AA tilt, the Tribesmen were victorious in their next four games before falling to Thomaston. They then dropped three straight, including two overtime contests, before they trounced the Moultrie Packers for the second time. After thumping Roosevelt to make a clean sweep of the Atlanta schools, the Redmen faced four games with 1-AA foes. Mrs. Lipsey, known to her millions of fans as MARTY MACBETH, is now starring in the current Broadway hit, “Ten Year Scratch,” directed and produced by Mr. LIPSEY. This play, written by the famous playwright, AL LOVELESS, recently won the Pulitzer prize. Seen next is movie queen DOROTHY WARD, escorted by Fab Punter, who is leaving early to attend the world premier of her new movie, “Leave Me or Me Leave.” The crowd looks with admiration at the next celebrity; immediately they recognize him as the great tap dancer. FRANK ORGEL. Talking with him is SYLVIA LEWIS, who is now teaching bop at Ty-Ty Tech. BILL GARRISON, famed bandleader of the Baronettes, an all-girl band, and BRYAN GLASS, now a member of the Marine Band, join them. Others among the musically inclined are concert pianist, PONNY MANUEL; CHARLES GREENWAY and JOAN LAND, a recording team; and GLORIA MARTIN whose record, “Teaching Your Parakeet to Talk,” has just sold its millionth copy. Busy gathering juicy bits of gossip for Modern Scream, a movie magazine, is BEVERLY DURDEN. She is now interviewing JANETH FARRIS, who was recently named “Covergirl of the Month.” KAY REYNOLDS, now owner of the Lick-Proof Lipstick Corporation and ETHEL BROACH, queen of the Old Silver Tobacco Corporation, are discussing their enterprizes. Hair stylists, JEAN GOOLSBY and ELAINE GOODIN, have also been detained by Miss Durden. Among the homemakers here today are JACKIE BROWN, JO ANN ROYAL, HAZEL BLOUNT, JANE BAILEY, MARTHA McCOOK and LYN-ETTE LAYSON. They are discussing their children with teachers, SHARON GRIMES and BEVERLY HALL, who are now teaching nursery school at Jill and Jack Kindergarten, and BARBARA FORD, MARIE FOWLER, BARBARA HARROD, and MARY SIZEMORE, who are employed by the Home Econdmics Department at A.H.S. Already seated are some outstanding personalities from the class of ’56. EDWARD LAW, an outstanding lecturer, is now doing a series of lectures on “The Common Use of the Brain in Everyday Life.” Noted in the medical field is OTTIS GILES, a brain specialist. Equally outstanding is-JOEL LAND, a theologian. Standing in line at the concession stand is RITCHY M. MARBURY, III, with his lovely wife and his three, sons, Ritchey IV, V, and VI. Directly behind him are FRANCES SHADBURN, who has gained fame in the literary field with her detective stories, and RICHARD BREWER, now referred to as the Sir Walter Scott of Modern Times. Also connected with the literary field is JEAN MATHIS, current editor of Agricultural Bulletin No. 25 ANN RUFFIN, a professional beachcomber, is relating some of her exciting adventures to JANE GREEN, a famous fortune-teller, and LLOYD GOLDSTEIN, a big game hunter, also has some tales to tell. DIANNA LANG, who raises Siamese cats, is listening eagerly. WILLIAM ASHBERRY, current King of the Wild Frontier and JOYCE HANCOCK, Program Chairman of D.A.C. (Daughters of American Convicts) are sitting with MARCIA STEPHENS, a famous psychiatrist. MARILYN BRUNSON makes a grand entrance with her husband, a millionaire from Cuba. DALE BRASWELL, who puts raisins in raisin bran, is listening to LYNWOOD ALLIGOOD, who drives a street cleaner, DONALD SOUTHWELL, currently driving a sight-seeing bus in Seesburg, and DONALD SHIRLEY, a San Francisco trolley operator. CECIL SMITH and LARRY BRYAN, zoo keepers, are conversing with MARY SPIVEY, a snake charmer, and ALLEN SNIDER, who narrates “Travel Talks” in the movies. We see HERMAN ROBERTS, a tobacco auctioneer, and MARTHA LE SUEUR, who writes unabridged dictionaries, arguing over the uses of proper diction. We notice that four of our most noted alumni are absent. The names of PAT ADAMS, CAROLINE ROBISON, BILL SHACKELFORD, and HILTON SEGLER, are appearing id the leading newspapers because they have just left on a rocketship to the moon. PAT, a noted Latin teacher, plans to take a survey on “How Many Moon-Men Speak Latin?” BILL, a noted scientist, has invented ,the rocket ship and is going along for the ride while HILTON SEGLER is pilot, and CAROLINE ROBINSON is the beautiful stewardess. Over to the side can be seen our leading business executives discussing business. JIMMY BELL is owner of Old-Way Cleaners and gets most of his business from PEGGY HATCHER and SYBIL RIFKIN, buyers from Tracy’s, a famous department store in New York. DORTHY RAGAN, a noted chiropractor and FRANK SADLER, who won all honors in the sports events at the Olympics, are discussing FRANK’S latest discovery “Sun-baby’s Sun Tan Lotion.” ROSS MALONE, president of Malone Muffler Company, is running from one group to another while J. W. SMITH, president of General Motors, PENNY McDANIEL, lady barbershop operator, and WINSTON ALVERSON, president of Georgia Pea Pickers’ Association, cattle king CHARLES FUSSELL, and BUBBA PHILLIPS, owner of Silver Glow Dairy, are discussing their similar occupations. PHIL FAGAN and TOMMY FOGLE are standing near one of the popcorn machines operated by RAINES WAKEFORD. DAN BROOKS is managing the other. They are still feuding, as usual, and are competing for the popcorn concession business tonight. Raines’ motto is “I’m never too pooped to pop.” PHIL and TOMMY, reporters for the Times, are interviewing RENE BARNETT, U. S. Ambassador to France, and Georgia’s two great senators, BYRON HAIRE and ESTOL BEL-FLOWER. DONALD BELT, photographer for the same noted newspaper, is taking pictures of SHIRLEY ROYALS, who is the World’s Champion Baton Twirler. Albany’s mayor, SUHAYL RA-FEEDIE, and CARL HANCOCK, mayor of Leesburg, join the group. GENE McCALL, a bookie who really gets around, is talking about the races to a group which includes RALPH GAY, a lighthouse keeper, JOHN STONECYPHER, principal of Broad Street School, and DONALD HART, who drives a semi-truck. MARTHA HACKNEY, famous woman lawyer, enters with her husband, a celebrated Spanish matador, and quickly runs to speak to her old friend PATTI GREEN, who now writes jokes for the FRANK THURMOND Comedy Hour. Incidentally, FRANK is talking to the coach right now, and with him is ROY LIPSEY, who pads cells for the Milledgeville Asylum. Standing near this group is another one which includes DWIGHT SLOCUMB, editor of the Saturday Review, and WARREN SHIVER, professor of English at Harvard. About twenty others are listening to their brilliant conversation. Among these fascinated listeners is JAN CROCK, a stenographer from a New York business firm. Coming through the gate next, we see a group of busy, efficient secretaries who have taken time off from their typewriters and shorthand books to come tonight. They are DORIS STATON, MARGARET BARBRE.' NELL BEARRY, and CARO-LYN FLOYD; CAROLYN is now secretary to the ROBERT FOWLER Insurance Company. Seated in Section “C” we see a group of alumni discussing the changing of the tide in the Dead Sea. They are JIMMY RAMSEY and LOREN SEAGROVES, who are whalers; CURTIS RHODES, frogman in Brazil; LAMAR SOPER, sponge diver, and MAGOLINE LINDSEY, who just broke the world’s record while swimming the English Channel underwater. Coming in now is DAVID ADAMS, who made good use of his artistic talent by forging and counterfeiting. He is now the art editor of the Alcatraz Weekly. Following his closely is JACK HURST, who plays Mack Hammer in the new Edgar Allan Poe mystery series. Close behind BETTY MARINO and LAYNETTE McCORKLE, lifeguards at Cape Cod Bay, we see LONNIE GIBSON, who has just won the Kentucky Derby on his famous horse, Lady of Leisure. RONNIE BOLTON and SAM HAMMOND enter next, both handcuffed, as they are rival prize fighters. LA LA ALLIGOOD, a professional woman wrestler, walks between them. Next we see WILLIAM LEWIS, world renowned waterboy for the Doerun Devils. It is rumored that he has spilled more-water than any waterboy in history. TED MAULDIN and WILLIS BALL enter, still talking about the soap box derbies which they almost won. We now recognize NANCY LEEGER, President of East Albany Motorcycle Club, by her goggles and cap. She is notoriously known as the Terror of Highway 19. CHARLES JACKSON, parliamentarian of the same club, joins this group. WILLIS BOWLES and HENTZ BARINEAU, football coaches at Acree, are seen climbing over the fence at the north end. They forgot their tickets. JAMES MACOLLY comes in next, but not alone. Still the most eligible bachelor in Georgia, he is followed by twenty-seven freshman girls at A.H.S. BENNIE HARRIS comes in slightly dazed, as he has just now finished a non-stop trip around the world in a car. The reunion of the class of ’56 is indeed a glorious occasion. As you can readily see, the members of this class have known happiness and success during the past decade.LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT We, the graduating class of 1956, being of sound mind and body, do hereby establish the following bequests: Ann Rose leaves her frivolous ways to quiet Kay Barrett.
