SENIGR CLASS I-HSTQRY THE INDIAN TRAIL BECAN IN 1948-this was the first year that our tribe was large enough to consider. Because of the changeover to the twelve grade system, it was first thought that there would be no graduating class in 1951, but because of transferees, athletes who stayed in 'school for another year of partici- pation in sports, and various other reasons, the 1951 graduating class evolved. ONLY TEN MEMBERS of the present senior class were freshmen in Albany lligh School in 1948. Besides the ten of us there were thirty-two others who have since graduated or dropped out of school. The boys elected Billy Smith president, and the girls were led by Eloise Fletcher. That year marked the first stage of our trail. THE YEAR 1949 found the class enlarged by eight transferees. Thus the number of students in A. fl. S. who were to graduate in '51 was increased to eighteen. Bobby Manshcld and Lynn Lilliston, both '50 graduates, were elected to the presidency. IN OUR JUNIOR YEAR we '5lers began to add up. With transferees and holdovers the class increased to thirty-one. Our capable class presidents were Wayne Hayes and Wayne Posey. One of the highlights of the year was the junior-Senior Picnic at Radium, followed by the tea dance at the Legion Clubhouse. MANY EVENTS HIGHLICIITED our senior year. The much dreaded belt line was abolished as the form of initiation and "slavery" was instituted in its place. The activity of the student council reached a new peak at Albany High School this year. 1951 marked the first year that all athletic competition was in the Class AA field fthe highest classification in the statel. WITH THE END of the Hrst semester time began to fly. Before anyone realized it, it was time for the graduation parties, which everyone enjoyed. The only bad thing was that time passed too quickly. THE END OF OUR TRAIL was reached on May 2.8 when a small, eager senior class reached a major goal in the big trail of Life-we graduated! --Mes?-M CLASS PROPI-IECY Place: Albany, Georgia. Occasion: Reunion of the 1951 graduating class of A. H. S. Time: 1961. Place: Myron Haneock's famous Swankmore Hotel which was so lavishly designed by Thomas E. Stonecypher, the renowned architectg and constructed by the brilliant contractor, Turner Wells. Mr. Hancock had generously donated the use of his spacious dining hall, elegantly decorated by Ann Coleman and Colleen Smith of the "Smith and Coleman" interior decorating firm. After checking in with the desk clerk, Marion Shirley, we met Tommy and Gracie Coleman, who invited us on a tour of the town. We consented and WCl1t out the front door which was located on Broad Street. We decided to walk as we had just told the bell-boy, who was recognized later as Andy Usry, an old high school acquaintance, to put our cars back of the hotel in the garageg we started east on this street. While walking down Broad Street, we saw the streamlined figure of Emalene Camp slipping out of Marjorie Bennet's Beauty Salon where she had just been glamorized Calthough she was already quite prettyl We bought ai paper from one of john Cart-y's lleraltl carriers. llurriedly leafing through it, we noticed with great interest the picture of Metropolitan Opera star, Laura Rietz, 89 who was retuming to Albany for a home -town concert 'the Municipal Auditorium, which, by the way, had been moved from its old place on Pine to a new place on the other side of town and was now located near an exclusive department store, owned and managed by Mr. R. L. Der- van. Another item of interest was the article about three all-star football players, George Beggs, Pete Cox, and Price Lee Westbrook, currently playing in the Rose Bowl. Still on the sports page we saw that Frank Mock and john Oliver were having a match race at Gene Cutt's Speedway. Wayne Hayes was working as the mechanic on both cars. 'Deciding that a cup of coffee might revive us, we went into Keel's Drug Store where we saw Ed Keel filling prescriptions and trying to catch up on his customers in the new soda fountain addition. john Reid was there jerking sodas and was as friendly as ever. At the table next to us we saw Professor and Mrs. Putman. We happened to glance at the clock and saw that we were al- ready late for the reunion, so we drank our coffee in haste and proceeded to pay the check, but were stopped by Oliver Waddell, now a promising young lawyer, who insisted on the honor. We then hurried to the hotel where everyone was waiting. As we entered the dining hall, we heard the strains of Willard Prince's orchestra that was touring the South this season and had consented to provide music for the occasion. When we talked with Willard, we were not too surprised to hear that Miss Sarah Seagle had just left his band for Vaughn Monroe's and that he hoped to replace her with Ray johnson, a popular vocalist of the day. We inquired about Kenwood Malone, of whom we had heard so much, and were told that he had retired from his singing career and had decided to continue with his "Backsaving Wall Cleaning" business of his high school days. The waitress, Wynelle Champion, spied us at the band stand and hurried over to show us to our table which was right in the center of everything and very nicely placed, being surrounded by all of our old fellow classmates. w On our left was a table of four handsome gentlemen, seemingly still unmarried, who were recognized as jim Macbeth, Robert Hollowell, Morgan Rogers and Bill Collins. On our right were the Bob I-larvey's still as happy as ever. Seated directly in front of us were Billy Hubbard and Margaret Vick Cnow married, though not to each otherD, talking over old memories. While we were still gazing at all of the beaming faces, we saw a goodlooking young man, who might have been a movie star from his appearance, table hopping, resembling an old school chum we had known as Bennett Tyler. He was not, however, table hopping at the moment as he was mopping up a glass of water he had knocked over on Io Anne Giles' evening dress as he passed by. jo Anne was now the manager of the famous Kansas City girls' basketball team. We happened to look at the door and saw a few late comers laughing in their usual way trying to sneak in unnoticed. Mrs. Janice Moree and husband, Wayne Posey and fiance, Frances Surface and husband, and Mrs. Mae Heidt among the group, also june Strickland chose this time to make her entrance, late as usual. Our attention was then called to the other side of the hall where a group of men's voices CPaul Copeland's, Frank Crocker's, and David Kennedy's, to be cxactD were singing loudly some of our old school songs and just making noise in general. Lavon Pritchard, the Master of Ceremonies, went over to quiet them for a few minutes while Emogene McLemore gave a speech welcoming everyone and inviting us to have a good time. This speech was interrupted never to be finished when Miss Ann Cobb tripped and fell, hurting her ankle as she tried to slip back to her table after she had been chatting with some friends at another table. This situation was remedied with call, "Is there a doctor in the house?" It was answered by Dr. Pat Burke, M.D., who could not leave old Phoebe Putney. Since it was quite late and time for everyone to leave until the ncxt reunion, joel Mikell, :mc of Albany's promising young businessmen, led the group in the "Alma Mater." With many a fond farewell, we all thought of wending our weary ways home still tingling happily with ex- citcment and longing for our high school days now more than ever. So ends the tale of a most happy evening, perhaps never to be repeated again. As thc alumni parted, tears could be seen in many an eye while one echo, a beautiful sound to all of our ears, was hcard over and over again, "HERE'S TO YOU DEAR OLD A. H. S...." 90 LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT We, the Senior Class of 1951, being of sound mind and body, do hereby make the following be uests: q George Beggs leaves his wonderful personality and friendly ways to "Bull" Whittle.
