The interior of the box looked so spacious that the more Amazonic members of the group-Marty Cook, Bill Collins, Esther Attarian, and Gene Purello-leaped downward and began to roam. Peering through a cloud of sulphur smoke, their burning eyes detected the forms of Paul Cash and Dick Dobris. They are still trying to master chem- istry despite their great disappointment last week upon learning somebody else had already patented their newest formula under the name of "sloe gin fizz". When the smoke had cleared, Marty pointed to a poster hanging on one of the walls. It advertised Jo Ann Jacobson's recently-opened factory whose slogan is "We forge library slips, seventh period slips, and if you wish, save you a booth in John's." They noticed other bulletins heralding the latest news: Betty Merdides, Sondra Daniels, and Phyllis Brickman are top salaried models at the Pulling Agency. Ben can no longer count his money alone. He has hired Tacy Giftos as an assistant. Dan Sekellick is supplying the models, having had so much experience in that field. Pat Rudnick is still sitting at the State Leis- lature, ever hoping that someone will explain to her how inflated currency aids the farmer. "Say, forget those bulletins and listen to this!" called Bill. Behind a velvet curtain, Madame Sybil's Drama School course had begun with the exercise, "Schleifstein-pronounce it!" class a last plea, Danny Krouner rushed to within twelve feet of her, took aim with a marshmallow--and Swish! Without any hesitation, the group called Bob Penney, the nearest D.D.S., to the scene. He arrived, wearing a sign lettered, Painless, Penniless Penney Places Plates Properly, and after removing the marshmallow from Ellen's teeth, returned to his office singing, "That was a mangy job." The group now came upon Al Casarotta and Teddy Chochos who had joined the Navy to see the WAVES. All asked the boys if they had heard about Art McCabe. He is midget wrestling in Chicago. The four adventurers continued until they reached the Metropolitan Opera House. From within came the voice of Sylvia Adams, followed by Cathy Hider and Shirley Kunz rendering "The Last Rose of Summer", or, "Hymn to a Pillow and a Glass of Hot Milk." The explorers turned their attention to a mys- tery play being shown on a nearby TV set. The play, starring Lee Padula with her dangerously sharp violin bow, and Gail Stewart and Ralph Salisbury as collectors of art masterpieces. Esther changed the station. Everyone immedi- ately recognized Marilyn Thunfors now directing her own program, Who Said That and Whose Name Can We Put It Under. Gene turned the set off and the eager chums continued their investigation. Approaching what appeared to be a football huddle, they recognized the voices of Doug Gallagher Know captaining an All-Pro Grid Teamj and Brad Allan Ctrack starl. Since they appear to be preparing for departure, I should like to recom- mend to them certain establishments where they may find other former classmates! Frances Shair and Arlette Torner are furthering their interest in social work by opening, not a half a house, but a Hull House. Debbie Katz, Betty Wilson, and Janet Redwood have opened their own library. The only things taken out are the girls. Sonya Morris may be found teaching a history class. Even a copy of Pravda by Joe Stalin's protege Dick Goedeke was on hand. Marty expressed a mutual thought when she remarked, "I wonder why this bookstand doesn't carry You Can't Buch the Machine by Lee Bee or that other best-seller, Outline on Education by Cor- neilson, Coffee and Leventhalf' "We could drop in on Ursula Seidner, Chief Accountant at the Chase National Bank, or visit Leona Howard, now Secretary of Treasury. Both boys prolonged their debate to greet the members of the group who were bringing several interesting facts to light. Gene Thalheimer is recuperating just now from an unfortunate accident. In the heat of a recent football scrimmage, he mistook the pigskin for his gum and tried to place it behind his ear. Rosemary Generali, Sam Audrain, Marilyn Luther and Rosemary Gallop have finally accom- plished what other faithful customers of John's have been contemplating for years. After opening the yearls schedule with the now- famous Tri-Hi initiation ceremony, the group settled down to some of their more serious aspects. They sent a basket of food at Thanksgiving time to a needy Albany family. They also sent gift boxes to soldiers and civilians in Korea. All was not on the solemn side, however. Along with our usual features, such as the traditional Christmas party, 'lpot luck" supper, and movies, we took ad- vantage of dancing lessons, including, of course. the Charleston. All in all, it was a year marked by a fine blend of charitable and social accomplish- ments. EY ,H-J The '50-'51 season started out with a bang for Star-Hi, our infant organization sponsored by the Y.W'.C.A.! Our sophomores learned the injustice of being underclassmen when that fateful night of October 24 found them submerged in a cloud of flour and walking in a path of spaghetti. But it was all in fun. Cosmetics and clothes are the two important Cls in a teen-age girl's life. So we had first a cosmetic demonstration followed in a few weeks by an enlightening talk by a prominent buyer from VVhitney's. Club members were used to illustrate some of the do's and don't's of good grooming. lf alloted an hour's time, would you be able to find a '48 calendar, an eggshell, or a green feather in downtown Albany? It can be done when you're out on a scavenger hunt. Those who went on Star-Hi's merry search can testify to that. A very important part of Star-Hi's program has been its hard-working basketball team. Having de- feated Albany Home for Children, they hope to score victories over St. Vincent's, Tri-Hi, and others. Our most significant accomplishment to date, however, has been the establishment of our club newspaper, "Star-News." You can find anything from poetry to sports, and of course, as one might expect in a girl's club, a gossip column. All con- tributors are in line for credit, but Marilyn Tator, our fine editor, is due for a lion's share of laurels. i Aside from the fun we had at our me there was also a place for serious thinking, as can be evidenced in our explosive discussions of child and parent psychology, dating, and college vs. com- mercial work. Xlany students had no time in their schedule for lregularl Art classes, but by taking advantage of the Art Club program they were able to fulfill their ambitions to draw and paint all classes of sub- jects. During the wintry months we were given a demonstration of technique in oils by llr. Herbert Steinlce, Director of Art in our schools. Mr. john Gallucci, our advisor. gave a demonstration in watercolors. Some of our outstanding members were Bill Curtis, last year's president and Art Editor of the Yearbook, who plans to go into commercial art: Harry Rich, first prize winner in the Halloween XVindow Painting Contest, who also plans to go into commercial art, and Dan Sekellick who won honorable mention in the same contest and who wants to enter the held of architecture. All the world's a stage. 781 During September. the choir settled down to the process of organizing and drilling on fundamentals. Shortly thereafter, the group performed at a Lion's Club luncheon, made recordings for an Armistice Day program, and presented a program for the Albany Association of Cniversity XVomen. Later on, five members of the choir represented the High School at Columbia High in the annual NYSSKIA Festival. Next came the annual Christmas Fes- tival and an assembly program of Christmas music followed by an inspiring carol sing, rendered by the choir as they walked through the corridors. The new year found us rehearsing for the .-Xnf nual Choir Concert. The program included several noteworthy pieces. Uutstanding among these were the sextette from "Lucia", and two numbers sung by a new musical group known as the Albanettes. VVe then began to look forward with anticipaf tion to the annual Choir Competition in Glens Falls. The olhcers of the band this year were Sam Robinson, President, Ralph Schilling, Vice-Presi- dentg Larry Fay, Treasurer, Phyllis Gifford, Secre- tary, and Sylvia Cohen and Phyllis Gifford, Librarians. Included in our busy schedule of performances were the XVhitney's Parade, the VVashington and St. Patrick's Day parades, and the annual trip to Catskill for the school band competition. lt's a fly, not a note! The most important date in the year, however, was the annual A.H.S. Band Concert. The most popular pieces on the program were Von Suppe's Overture to the 'APoet and the Peasant", "Head- lines", a modern rhapsody by Carelton Colby, and the "Norwegian Rhapsodyn by F. Christiansen. i'Asleep in the Deep", a tuba solo by Joe Hudson, and A'Concertina'l, a clarinet solo by George lllarge, were both immensely enjoyed by the audience. llr. Easy victories over Amsterdam and Nott Terrace in the post-season playoffs for the Class A title at Con- vention Hall in Saratoga enabled us to meet llont Pleasant. with whom we were tied for the lead in Section 2, for a rubber game. Last year's team was the best the High School has had in many a season, for it finished with an undefeated record. But the backbone of that team is gone, as Mickey Strasser, Ralp Salis- bury, and Dave Lee will not be playing this year. However, the future is by no means as black as it may seem, for most of the other schools will find themselves in the same position. This year we have returning Jason Klillman. who was No. l man during his sophomore and junior years, and Sandy Lacks, who rounded out last yearls varsity. llarvin Grode, jerry and Nick Sokaris, together with many promising juniors and sophomores, will add much to the chances for a successful team. crass lznunlr Despite an unimpressive season, the A.H.S. Cross Country team had plenty of spirit, and all the boys were enthusiastic in attending practice dur- ing the short season. They will be gunning for the C.B.A, relays win for the third year in a row, which would retire the trophy per- manently. Some of the top prospects are Bill VVangler, -H05 Co-captain VValt VViehler, 880 record holder, Ariel Goodrich, hurdlerg Butler Corey, ace broad- jumperg Co-captain Dave Brown and Paul Cash, high-jumpers, Stan Cleyenger and Brad Allen, pole vaulters. Clevenger will also be the team's best hurdlerg Art Stillwagon and Fred Holt, milersg and Joe Hudson and Bill Collins, the shot- putters and discus throwers. ln 1950 we defeated Vincentian 79 to 26: C.B.A. 71 to 32: Schuyler 68 to 365 and Albany Academy 56 to -1--1-. 1951 looks just as good, if not better. track l881 The Albany High Bowling Team, coached by Klr. Connie Heim, completed the 1951 season in fine style by defeating Altamont and Nott Terrace High Schools by over ZOO total pins. Besides win- ning various interscholastic matches the A.H.S. keglers also won the New York State Public High School Athletics Association Tournament by over 280 total pins. The individual high-triple honor .vent to Vern Richberg with 586, while Capt. Dan Smyth took third with 554. Lou Lavender placed fifth with 5-ld, and Don Kliller eleventh with 50-l. Smyth also won the individual high single with 223 as A.H.S. took the single team high with 94-3. Letter winners were Don Miller, Lou Laven- der, Leroy Brunk, George Nlorrison, Vern Rich- berg, Harvey Linden, and Dan Smyth. Klr.
