MATH AND . . . An Albany grad returns! The newest Math and Science teacher is Mr. Bruce Downing, a real local boy! He was born in Berkeley, attended Marin School for a couple of months, and graduated from Albany High School. He then went on to get a degree in Math and Science from UC Berkeley. One anecdote that he remembers from his days as a student here is the time that he and the other young men were threatened with suspension for having long hair, that is, hoir below the ears! The great joy of his life is his family, his wife, his daughter, and his twins Cone boy, one girlj. He admits that they are a handful, but clearly loves them very much. Albany High continues to have the excellent reputation it had when he graduated, he says, but he prefers being on the staff to being enrolled here! He feels that there is an ex- cellence on the teaching staff that was, and still is, evident. His words of wisdom to all students? Don't grow up too fast, and be sure to enjoy youthl ww Elizabeth Klein Loring Barker Math Math Last year Mr. Hoyle and his wife got on a plone, and moved to Lerwick, the Shetland Islands C200 miles Northeast of Scotlandj in a teaching exchange program. He taught math to seventh and eighth graders, and lived in Mr. William Haig's house. Mr. Haig was an exchange teacher here last year. Mr. Hoyle says he enjoyed the change very much, and found great differences bet- ween the students there, and those here. Everyone in the Islands is very self-dicipllned, very reserved, and extremely shy, much more so than people here. He was able to get through the shyness to the kids he taught however, and he liked the fact that they were self-diciplined enough to do their homework, or whatever he asked them to do. This made the whole school system run more smoothly,. Hoyle feels that experience builds education, and that this exchange was good for a change, although he and his wife are very glad to be home.
