I. ff! ,. .. .. ,. Y it-'W.'F7Sf? ' a ,XR . , , -, K 5 . hwQ O,..,lL-fx, y LL gg ,Q xx COMMANDING offauisezif-2 fltflifi U. S. S. ALBANY LCG-not Ml 'ffl To The Men Of ALBANY: This book represents a pictorial history of some dramatic moments in our lives that will be long- remembered. It is of special interest because each one of you has contributed to its publication by virtue of a photo or by sharing in the experiences portrayed in the pages that follow. It will always be a good reminder of interesting events that unfolded aboard the ship at sea, our interactions with other ships - both foreign and American - and the pleasant memories of visits to distant lands. Discussions will persist over the years on which country or port of the six visited was the most attractive. This moment in time, September-December 1975, has been marked by some unusually noteworthy events in the history of our navy and ALBANY. First, we were an important participant in the celebration of our navy's 200th birthday. Typical of many American navy ships over the past two centuries, ALBANY was deployed in the service of her country - this time in support of American and NATO objectives. Second, our operations extended above the Artic Circle where crew members were duly initiated into the Order Of The Blue Noses. Finally, ALBANY was honored by the privilege of serving as a fleet commander's flagship in an operation consisting of about sixty ships, aircraft and submarines from several nations. So that you are not misled into thinking that this was a luxury cruise by the photos on the pages that follow, I think it important to remind you as to the purposes of this voyage. It is a fact that an undertaking of this sort has required many hours of arduous work for all hands under very challenging conditions. Such tasks are exemplified by cold, windy nights for lookouts on deck, high temperatures in engineering spaces, and port and starboard watches for many men. The basic objective for this deployment has been to enhance the readiness of the Atlantic Fleet in terms of a series of training exercises designed to test the proficiency of our men as well as the capabilities of our ships. The fact that the principal focus of operations has been with NATO units abroad underscores the importance of testing our military muscle in collaboration with allies. ' So it is that this cruise book represents a milestone in our personal history when we have shared a mo- ment in the life of USS ALBANY. She has steamed approximately 16,500 miles between September 26th and December 10th. Her ports of call were Oslo, Hamburg, Rotterdam, Brest, Portsmouth, and Rosyth-Edin- burgh. Her excellent capabilities have been fully tested by her sailors and marines. The performance of her crew in all phases has been excellent and highly deserving of the traditional accolade reserved for ex- QZLMMAQW R. D. Heenan Captain, United States Navy cellence - well done.
