U. S. S. ALBANY LCG-not Ml 'ffl
To The Men Of ALBANY:
This book represents a pictorial history of some dramatic moments in our lives that will be long-
remembered. It is of special interest because each one of you has contributed to its publication by virtue of
a photo or by sharing in the experiences portrayed in the pages that follow. It will always be a good
reminder of interesting events that unfolded aboard the ship at sea, our interactions with other ships -
both foreign and American - and the pleasant memories of visits to distant lands. Discussions will persist
over the years on which country or port of the six visited was the most attractive.
This moment in time, September-December 1975, has been marked by some unusually noteworthy
events in the history of our navy and ALBANY. First, we were an important participant in the celebration of
our navy's 200th birthday. Typical of many American navy ships over the past two centuries, ALBANY was
deployed in the service of her country - this time in support of American and NATO objectives. Second,
our operations extended above the Artic Circle where crew members were duly initiated into the "Order
Of The Blue Noses." Finally, ALBANY was honored by the privilege of serving as a fleet commander's
flagship in an operation consisting of about sixty ships, aircraft and submarines from several nations.
So that you are not misled into thinking that this was a luxury cruise by the photos on the pages that
follow, I think it important to remind you as to the purposes of this voyage. It is a fact that an undertaking of
this sort has required many hours of arduous work for all hands under very challenging conditions. Such
tasks are exemplified by cold, windy nights for lookouts on deck, high temperatures in engineering spaces,
and port and starboard watches for many men. The basic objective for this deployment has been to enhance
the readiness of the Atlantic Fleet in terms of a series of training exercises designed to test the proficiency
of our men as well as the capabilities of our ships. The fact that the principal focus of operations has been
with NATO units abroad underscores the importance of testing our military muscle in collaboration with
allies.
' So it is that this cruise book represents a milestone in our personal history when we have shared a mo-
ment in the life of USS ALBANY. She has steamed approximately 16,500 miles between September 26th and
December 10th. Her ports of call were Oslo, Hamburg, Rotterdam, Brest, Portsmouth, and Rosyth-Edin-
burgh. Her excellent capabilities have been fully tested by her sailors and marines. The performance of
her crew in all phases has been excellent and highly deserving of the traditional accolade reserved for ex-

cellence - well done.
Four ships of the U. S. Navy have carried
the name of ALBANY, in honor of the capital
city of the State of New York.
The first ALBANY, a 22-gun sloop-of-war,
was built in the New York Navy Yard and com-
missioned in November of 1846. Within a year of
her commissioning, ALBANY saw service in the
Mexican War, taking part in operations against
Vera Cruz, Tuxpan,,and Tobasco. Following the
war, she was assigned various duties with the
1West Indies Fleet.
ALBANY'S career was destined to end

Effective 1 November 1958, ALBANY'S hull
classification and number were changed to ICG-
101, and exactly four years later, she emerged
from the yards as the world's most powerful
warship. On her maiden voyage off the Virginia
Capes, on 30 january 1963, ALBANY fired two
TALOS and a TARTAR, marking the first time
three missiles had been launched from a
warship simultaneously. This displayed, convin-
cingly, the immense capabilities of a modern
man-of-war.
As such, the ALBANY made her presence
felt, having extensive deployments in the Garib-
bean, the Atlantic, and the Mediterranean. Dur-
ing several of these cruises, she operated with
the naval forces of other nations, notably those
of Great Britain, Norway, Denmark, France,
Netherlands, Federal Republic of Germany,
Belgium, Greece, Italy, and Turkey. In these
liaisons, ALBANY'S keynote of high efficiency
made her well known to the navies ofthe world.

The West Germans were as excited to see us as
we were to visit their country and meet them. Wave
upon wave of enthusiastic guests flooded ALBANY,
where our "language barrier" dissolved, our guests
thoroughly enjoyed themselves, and where the
message of good will and peace was conveyed
between two powerful countries. For ALBANY
sailors, liberty meant walking to St. Pauli and enjoy-
ing the many sights along the famous Reeperbahn,
eating Bratwurst and sauerkraut, drinking German
beer, and taking advantage of the wide range of
shopping possibilities whether in a small shop or a
modern department store. After three days of absor-
bing the German culture, we were once again on the
ITIOYC.

Netherlands land of dikes windmills canals
and wooden shoes Bus tours were available to the
Heineken brewery and a cheese factory as well as
to Volendam a small sea coast town where we
observed the Dutch people in their traditional black
heavy woolen clothing and wooden shoes We will
remember Rotterdam as a mixture of modern shop
rustic row houses lining narrow streets and the
lacework of canals throughout the city bustling with
canal boat and barge traffic Although it was too late
in the season for tulips there were plenty of wind
mills to see bordering wide canals as we toured the
country side Wooden shoes and Dutch beer mugs
were only a few of the souvenirs brought back from
this memorable country All too soon though we
were on our way through the English Channel
toward France

Brest, a quiet town provided us with a brief
respite from the busy European cities we had just
left. Its location on the picturesque Brittany
coastline with its peaceful, protected harbor was a
relief for weary sailors. Brest's remaining for-
tifications, combined with the huge concrete sub-
marine pens within walking distance of ALBANY'S
berth, served to remind us of Brest's historical
significance. Our days were spent enjoying the fine
French food and drink, peaceful walks through the
town, and tours of the rugged coastline and rolling
country-side. We were sorry to leave such a relaxing
town for our next destination. 1

Although we were all pleased with our recently
acquired "Blue Nose" certification, we were most
happy to conclude our exhaustive NATO exercises
by making a port-call to Edinburgh. From our
anchorage in the Firth of Forth, we had a four-mile
liberty boat ride to Granton Landing, during which
we occasionally experienced cold winds and salt
spray. Sightseeing in Edinburgh made even this trip
worthwhile: the famous Edinburgh Castle - im-
pregnable in its day, as our tour guide explained -
gave us a spectacular view of the city, the Scottish
brogue added charm and fascination to the most
casual conversationg and shopping for multi-colored
plaid woolen fabric, a kilt, bagpipes, or a
tamoshanter was indeed a unique experience. Soon,
however, we were saying, "Good-bye," to Europe
and, "I-Iere we come, America!"

Because of ALBANY'S powerful weapons capability, her presence acts as a deterrent to aggression by
any potential enemy. Within the Weapons Department is a group of highly skilled men trained to service,
operate, and provide security for ALBANY'S sophisticated weapons systems.
F-1 Division maintains and operates the guidance systems for the long range Talos antiaircraft missile,
while Third and Fifth Divisions handle the missiles fore and aft, respectively. F-2 Division is responsible
for the shorter range Tartar antiaircraft missile system. F-4 Division mans the Weapons Direction Equip-
ment which through complex radar systems is capable of detecting and tracking enemy aircraft at great dis-
tances.
In addition to her antiaircraft power, ALBANY is capable of seeking out and destroying the enemy
below by the use of ASROC and torpedoes, systems which come under the expertise of Sixth Division.
Fourth Division's "Old Faithful" are the 5" 38 gun mounts, which provide a backup to the missile
systems. The very fact that these guns survive in this era of electronic weaponry is enough to convince one
of their capabilities.
As part of the Weapons Department, the Marine Detachment, Seventh Division, provides internal
security for ALBANY'S weapons systems and mans one of the 5" gun mounts. In addition "MARDET"
provides the "spit and polish" for frequent honors and ceremonies so common aboard a Flag Ship and gives
us the traditional military presence when required.

SUPPLY OFFICER
Whether providing a replacement for a damaged piece of gear, or providing for a routine haircut, the
Supply department is responsible not only for the logistical support, but also for the personal needs of the
members of the small city contained within ALBANY.
u S-1 Division is our logistical and supply nerve center, where coordinated effort and planning pays off to
bring us just about anything needed, ranging from pencils to major equipment. S1 also manages an on-
board stock of over 60,000 repair parts and consumables to support the ship's operations, whether in port or
on the high seas.
S-2 Division is tasked with the nearly twenty-four hour a day job of feeding a crew of 900 men as many
as four meals per day, 365 days a year. The hard work and dedication of the cooks, bakers, other mess
specialists, and messcooks, was particularly noticable with their preparation of an outstanding Thanksgiv-
LUS Day dinner that will be long remembered for its quality and the enjoyable atmosphere in which it was
erve .
For the numerous personal services provided to ALBANY's crew from the retail stores to the laundry
and dry cleaning plants to the "gedunk',, we have the hard working members of S-3 Division to thank.
. Whether underway, at home, or in a foreign port, our paydays come iight on schedule. Our disbursing
office makes up S-4 Division, which also provides any financial assistance which may be needed.
Food Service in the Wardroom and for the Captain, as well as a multitude of other officer service
fGSponsibilities are expertly accomplished by members of S-5 Division. These men provided excellent
meals and fine atmosphere for wardroom members and their guests during port calls and treated all of-
ficers to an outstanding Thanksgiving Day meal.
