COMMANDING OFFICER u. S. S. ALBANY lCG-10D ALBANY's second cruise, since modernization, to the Mediterranean for service with the SIXTH Fleet is now history. Those of us who were privileged to serve in her look back on it with pride and many, perhaps, will remember it as the highlight of their time in the naval service. They have every right to do so because ALBANY acquitted herself as a first rate ship of the line and turned in a perform- ance expected of a capital ship. From the beginning in early February 1971 at the Atlantic Fleet Weapons Range, she established herself as a most proficient missile ship. l-ler innate ability to assist others will long be remembered in the SIXTH Fleet. Her role as a pro- tector of the Attack Carrier Striking Group with the long range deterrence of the magnificent TALOS missile system is respected by both friend and foe. And last but not least, the image of America that she has proiected is one fraught with hon- gr. Tlhroughout it all she has been true to her motto - ASSIDUITY - attention to etai . It was on 15 June 1971 in Corfu, Greece that this gallant lady celebrated her twenty-fifth birthday. ln honor of her service to our country it is appropriate to ask what she would want said and remembered of her. I know she would approve of the following: She would want all to remember that she was born a fighting ship and will remain that way until she leaves the service. She would want it remembered that during these years of service she has borne her nation's flag in freedom's cause without it having been detiled while entrusted to her care. She would want it remembered that she has given her all and that no one has expected any less. Although she has never fired a shot in anger, she would want it remem- bered that perhaps her presence, with her guns of yesteryear and her missiles of today, has helped preserve the peace in the Mediterranean. And she would want it remembered that she always stands ready to defend the cause of freedom. She enters her second quarter-century of service to her nation knowing that wherever she has gone she has found her way into the hearts of people and holds most dear the salute of the naval service that transcends all others - WELL DONE. Now with the cruise over it was of course inevitable that her magnificent crew would break up and the many fine men go their separate ways. Such is the way of lite in the service. But wherever they have gone they have done so with the admir- ation and respect of the undersigned whose privilege it was to be their Command- ing Officer in the Guided Missile Cruiser ALBANY during her second Mediterra- nean cruise since modernization and the twelfth since her commissioning twenty- five years ago. The Navy is a way of life and it is by no means possible to exercise it now and then. THUCYDIDES
