ALBANY's first task in the Sixth Fleet during this cruise actually began before ALBANY entered Gibraltar as five officers reported to the staff of CTF 65 commanded by Rear Admiral William R. Guest. CTF 65 was at Palomares, Spain engaged in recovery operations where a land search failed to locate any trace of a nuclear bomb missing in the mid-air collision of a U. S.
