THE HISTORY OF THE CLASS T959
What can set a class one partacular class far far below the rest an the estamataon
of both faculty and alumna? What can so debauch and dassapate a certaan class as
to make at known as the Scourge of the Academy? For an answer let us turn back
the clock to September T946 the year ofthe anceptaon of the class of 59
As we vaew the charter members of the class we notace exceptaonally sad looks
on the faces of Deacon Kemp and Rex VanLoan Thas as because Mass Abbott
has recently taken away sandbox pravaleges for smokang an the cloak room They
are made to sat behand the paano untal the end of the half term an eval omen We clo
see one smalang face an the crowd that of Drew Sangster He as standang on has
andex fanger an the corner head down has face red from the exertaon tryang to
achaeve Mr Coltons Narvana He wall succeed an years to come These are the
auspacaous begannangs but we must go further to get the complete pacture
The year as T947 Two more have been thrown to the laons As we sat ln the
anataal meetang of the class one fagure as outstandang lt as fat and at as runnang after
the other boys It as Ball Haase The boys have been callang ham Sponge The other
face we can pack out as famalaar as that of Martan Faneman noted party glver It as
rumored that Nlartan has recently been to Syracuse and back an one naght an h s
express wagon
As the clock contanues an ats never endang cycle the class begans to take shape
By June of T948 Rachard OHara has embarked upon a vast sea of probataon h
wall learn to lake at Donald Noord has become quate profacaent an the faeld of pen
manshap and has demonstrated has great skall to everyones satasfactaon by defacang
the varaous blackboards and pranted notaces around school In the faeld of laterature
Dave Wanger has been workang sedulously on has latest and greatest achaevement
whach unfortunately wall not be completed untal has senaor year It as called the
Cue Erac Moore as lust recoverang from a bad experaence Some upperschoolers
threw ham anto the pool an a closed cardboard box from whach he maraculously
escaped and proceeded to break several world records an tryang to get out of the
pool The upperschool boys were xpelled
Are there more to loan the ranks? Let us see T949 as a barren year for the
Academy treasury Only one new face Bob Karkwood loans the fold Bob brangs wath
ham an ample supply of chalk erasers and used books all of whach he throws wath
deadly aam
At the turn of the decade the class has achaeved the fourth grade Gne of the
promanent members as Man Mountaan Frank who at as rumored goes out on
madnaght sortaes and kalls stray cats by hurlang paanos at them Another of the cats
as Jock Harcourt who spends a great deal of tame posang for pactures for the socaety
page and cleanang the beer cans and hot dog rolls out of has suburban pool
Ned Eckert as also a bag addataon to the class He as the farst an Academy hastory ever
to have receaved a senaor lacense an the thard grade John Evans has been practacang
all year wratang class hasto aes an preparataon for has senaor year Unfortunately John
wall be patrollang lattle known sectaons of Albany at the tame that at as wratten and

will mnss out on all the fun The last personage of any note IS Ed Schrauth Even
IH the fourth grade Ed IS known as the toughest defenseman IH the Twoy
Weague
From thus lust anyone can see why the class of 59 IS such a totally Ill class but
there are some more contrlbutors who must not be left out
The year IS l95l Butch Heller new to The Academy football system had had a
heartbreaking fall season He does not know that Ernne IS savlng hum for hrs one bug
break the Hrgh School game' Jeff Emptage alras Dave Baby Cortez has
recently had his hands Insured for fifty thousand dollars He also recently won the
Headmasters Prlze for Muslc for has performance of Clalre de Lune an 2X4 tlme
As the wheels of tlme slowly turn the inmates become the senuors of the lower
school Mother Sndman the pride of local 995319 of the Teamsters Union and the
Towse who has been reluctantly sold to the Academy by Rangers coach Phil
Watson Red wasnt such a bad guy Bob
Thus belng a study from the sclentlflc polnt of view the casual reader may be
come somewhat bored with the names and events recorded here but I assure
hum that they are necessary to appreciate fully the great achievement of this class
First parade flrst guldon IOIDT play They are all extremely thrlllnng The flrst
form IS peopled mannly wlth those who wall become stellar figures nn later school
lnfe Duck Wallace IS told that he must remove has fur coat If he wnshes to be ad
matted to the pool He cannot as he has grown It himself and thus he suffers
greatly In the summer Sandy Ross IS the first on has block to put a full race cam
on has express wagon
Carl Ernst makes the rounds every day saymg thanks to the teachers I wonder
what has valedlctory wlll be Bug Bull Mnnor as anxiously awaltmg has semor year

CUE
The tradltlonal slogan of the best CUE ever proved to be
quite true this year, as the CUE rolled off the presses One of
the :nnovatlons which made rt so was the addvtlon of a color
fold out page
The yearbook was edlted by Dave Wanger Assnstnng hum
were Sports Editor, Steve Gunther, Feature Edntor, Martln
Selxgman, and Literary Edltor, Andy Fisher
Busnness matters were supervlsed by Martin Flneman, with
Treasurer Alan Sums handling the flnances The unnumerable
sollcltors were under the direction of Subscription Manager
Mules Heller The photography displayed on these pages as
largely the work of John Sharlet, Photography Editor
The task of compiling the year's events into one concise
volume as a burdensome one, however, the CUE as proof of
the success of Its contributors and edators

For the second year In a row the Academy tennls team has
completed an undefeated season This comes from concentrated
practice and a love for tennis whnch seems to be lnherent In
Academy players
This year Coach Knowles s men won twelve matches mostly
against new competutnon They won the Capntal Dlstrlct League
Champlonshlps and took BCHS and Llnton In non league
matches The team won every meet 70 except at Shenen
dehowa when we won 61 The first five men always won
and the bottom half of the team began to play In the doubles
To hughllght the year we swept through the league tourna
ment at the end of the season Captain elect Bull Barnet and
Captain Ezra Mager won frrst and second In the singles and

VALEDICTORY
We have heard the cliches-about beginnings, about responsibility, about the future.
Gratitude, however, has no cliches, it is never trite, it cannot be expressed too often.
For what, then, are we-the class of 1959-grateful?
We are grateful for this institution. The Albany Academy embodies an ideal-founded in
tradition-of adequate preparation in learning and in self-discipline. We realize that this
ideal is not always carried into action, but it remains the one great principle upon which
the Albany Academy is based.
We are grateful for our teachers. On many a day we have spent most of our waking
hours with you, and so you could not help but have influenced our thinking. Our gratitude
to you is strongest at this moment, for we are nostalgic about our former relationship to
you. Never again shall we be your charges, no longer shall we sit in your classrooms listen-
ing. These experiences are past, but the memory will remain.
We are grateful for our friends, whoever you may be. You, like our teachers, are an
unmeasured- factor in our lives, we shall never know in full your effect on us.
We are grateful for our families. You sometimes think that we never know nor care
what gratitude is. But each of us knows what sacrifice his own family has made for
him. We minimize these sacrifices, this is a fault of youth, it is a sad fault, but it is a
fault that age will mend.
Now all of you-families, friends, and teachers-have gathered to honor the class of
1959, for this too we are grateful. But Commencement is not only a time to honor the
graduating class, it is also a time to honor all who have contributed to our graduation-a
graduation that has been the work of many hands and hearts. To them-to you-we the
Class of 1959 say simply and humbly: Thank You.
