If this is accom- plished in a manner which provides memories which will linger and be recalled to the readeris mind on each occasion he turns its pages in Search of a glimpse of the past, the book will serve its purpose well. Throughout the years CUE staffs have endeavored to work with this goal in mind. Life at the Academy, with its "glorious tradi- tionsf' has remained quite staticg as a result the format of the CUE has been more or less static, also. However, each class and in fact each individual has singular feelings about each event he participates ing these feelings vary and with them, the CUE. This year we have attempted to attract particular attention to the individual. We have done this because we feel that the cardinal factors which have made the Albany Academy a respected institution are two groups of men. The first group of men consists of those who have studied here and have subsequently gone forth as Alumni to take his position as a good if not prominent citizen. The other consists of those men who have given of their lives to instruct us, not only in the academic subjects but also in the way of clean living and fair play. VVe sincerely hope that you find in the CUE precisely what your singular wishes may be each time you desire to look back on your days as an "Academy boyf, S. A. S. DEDICATIO "Country" Morris A TRIBUTE XVords are a hollow means of expressing our regard for and our regret at the retirement of "Coat-h." Yet we who have known and loved him over the years feel constrained to express even though inadequately, our appreciation for his services and sorrow on his departure. The qualities that make for greatness in a man are difficult to measure. Some attain it by pre-eminence in industry, science, literature, art, or government. Some few by the greatness of their humility, love of their fellow man and devotion to a cause. Such a man is XVilliam G. Morris. An outstanding athlete, many worthy accolades bestowed upon him, he has heard the plaudits of great crowds, and yet always has he remained modest and unassuming. Countless opportunities were presented to him to do what some would call "advance" in his chosen profes- sion, by coaching college teams. However, he preferred to stay where duty and loyalty called him and where he had found his particular niche in life-with the boys at The Albany Academy. An outstanding coach of football, basketball, and baseball, whose knowledge of each of these games was infinite, as was his ability to teach them: a student meticulous in his attention to every detail of the coaching profession, a leader of men and of boys who could inspire them to great heights in victory, and comfort them in their losses, above all, a man whose first thought xvls not of xxrnnrnff but ot p1lXlllT tn ffrmt cord 1ncc xx 1th tht d uds sportsm mslup T1 ost ol us xxho h1xc h 1d thc opportunrtx to pl IX undcr hun rrc proud ot th rt prrvrlt gc 1nd Lnoxx that xxc 1rc the bcttu for t iet drd he not 1lone xx rn the respect of 111 of us, but of 111 xxho elme rn cont1ct xx rth lnm, ertlrer on the f1thlet1c Held 1n the eorrrdors of the school or rn lns home, not only of other stuclcnts but 11so of p1rcnts 1lumn1 fi1C1lCIAQ trustccs and not IH the lc 1st co lC1lC9 and players of opposrnq tc uns xx ho rccosgnrzcd hrs honcsty 1nd furness It IS trrte but true to SIN thrt no man cm take hrs place But at the s1me trme the sprrrt of farr pl IX 1nd cons1der1t1on for others, thc spurt xxhrch rn rdc hrs tc uns fight xvlth 111 thcn lrc nts for thc school rts pl 1x crs lox ed, the sprrrt th It lxctps thc Ac rdc mx 1 clt rr scntrncl st11l hrqh ocr thc Hudson rs thc sprrrt of YV1111am C Morrrs, und xx 111 lrxe on forever The Albany Academy oxx es much to lnm Its debt IS ours IS xvell Lone xx 111 tlns school muntarn 11S proud lnstorx because men such rs he are xxrllrnff to dcc1rc1tc then lrxcs to rt Among rts gre It long xxrll tht mcmorx ol Xl 1l111m C Morrrs bc trcasurcd xxrth honor, loxt, rncl 1l1cct1orr To xou Countrx, 1 tr uc fllblld, 1 xxondcr ful person 1 thorough gentleman Hall and farewell, but not Goodbye. jacob H. College flCS11IT1C1'l CColgate, Cornell, Army, and XYilliamsl accounted for four of the Academy's five defeats with the fifth coming at the hands of Peekskill Military Academy. The Cadets defeated B.C.H.S., R.P.I., Frosh, N.Y.M.A., and Troy High. Overall the record was disappointing to the many people who expected much of the 1958 squad, but it produced many extremely fine individual performances. Bill Dearstyne was undefeated in the 100 yd. hackstroke. His out- standing time of l:00.0 for this event set a new national record. Boh Kirkwood, ill during the latter part of the schedule, broke the school mark in the 100 yd. hutterfly. He will replace this year's captain, Bill Aussiker in 1959. Pieter Vanderzee and Eric Nloore, swimming thc 100 yd. hreaststroke and the 200 yd. freestyle, re- spectively, set new school marks in their events, and along with Kirkwood and Dearstyne were chosen as All-Americans. The grapplers, who were captained hy Boh Fraser, lost twice to Mt. Pleasant and once to N.Y.Xl.A. and Saratoga. Coach Olcott did a fine job of tutoring his experienced squad which performed well on occasion but lacked depth. Seniors Doug North, Bob Fraser. and jerry Spector will be sadly missed next yearg they formed the nucleus of this seasonis team. This year was a hot and cold campaign for the matmen. Nott Terrace and Darrow battled the Cadets to tie matchesg both were potential victories for the Red and Black. Gloversville, B.C.H,S., Schoharie, and Nott Terrace 12nd meetj were easy wins for the Academy whose only really superior opponent was N.Y.M.A. Dave Drumm, a first year man, did a fine joh for the team as did Chilly Foresman and Sandy Ross. Foresman, next yearis captain, will have a rough job emulating this season's won and loss slate. Academy wrestling teams have been constantly improving over the past few years under Coach Olcott, who devotes a great deal of his time to the sport. Nl. l'lllt'lll.lIl. -X. Varsity Hockey A team which this year appeared to be on Captain Cunther and Coach Townsend the comeback trail after a few very poor seasons was the hockey squad. Coach Charles Town- W send had not only a talented bunch of hustlers on his sextet, hut a hunch of scrappers and fighters. The skaters, captained this year by Steve Cunther twho incidentally was high scorer and undoubtedly the most outstanding playerl, posted a 3-4 record. XVinning its first two contests 3-0 and 3-2 over Lenox and Darrow respectively, the sextet was stopped 6-1 by LaSalle in its third game. Although the Cadets started their campaign well, a lack of ice and lapses of one or two weeks between practices foiled their hopes for a better than .500 season. Ed Schrauth and Robert Towse were outstanding in their defen- sive playing and stick handlingg both helped the squad immeasurahly in its closing game victory over C.C.ll.S. The team compiled a commendable 10-2 record which included seven victories and one defeat Within the league. Outscoring their opponents 103 to 49 for the season, it would appear that the Cadet "nine" had little trouble. They defeated Columbia, Milne, Shenendehowa, Ceach twicel and Albany High, Darrow, Van Rensselaer, and St. joseplfs leach oncel. Losses came at the hands of Albany High and Van Rensselaer. Academy's most outstanding offensive barrage was against Columbia when the Cadets triumphed 36 to 6 on 14 hits, 5 errors, 24 walks, 6 hit batsmen and 13 stolen bases. Carl Ernst and Jack Nowell shot some fine golf on occasion as they led the linksmen to double victories over Albany High and Philip Schuyler. However the team suffered twin setbacks at the hands of Vincen- tian, C.B.A., and Bethlehem Central. N.Y.NI.A. also managed to hang an early season defeat on the Bed and Black in a match that was played in a driving rain. Captain Bill Dorr and newcomers Dave Titus, Steve Safranko and Barry Fischer were other members of the squad, although a non- playing member was the great personality of the course, Coach Barrows. Mr. Barrows usually managed to go the first nine but found, with the other coaches, that an easy chair was often better than the back nine. Next years team will be captained by Carl Ernst who played number one man this season. Ernst shot in the seventies several times only to find himself beaten on occasion. The future looks bright for Academy's linksmen especially if they are able to reverse the two 9-6 decisions with Vincentian. The diplomas which we now hold in our hands attest to the trust that an educational system on trial has placed in us. As Man has progressed from the dawn of the Industrial Revolution to the Mechanical Age and now to the very brink of the Atomic Era, education, the basis of Man,s vast Knowledge and the foundation of his culture, has grown in importance until today the success or failure of a nation's educational system can well determine its fate. Since our years here at the Academy have thus been placed among the most important of our lives, let us take stock of ourselves at this moment of departure to see just what our education has done for us. How are we prepared for todayis complicated life? Our years at the Academy have been years of growth-physical, intellectual, and moral-and as we advance on to institutions of yet higher learning, this growth shall continue. Up to that 4, 1 'teachqrsg after we gt5duateQrom college, 1. ' w I5 if I Valedlctor - 51-.'ff "fa 1 l A iw' il!!! shall be. left to o t own resour 'es. Todays America-today's wc ld-is forward constantly and at a ral d pace world of tomorrow in which we shall take places as adult citizens will advance even more rapidly. To cope with the ever-expanding scope of human society, to play an integral and useful part in that society, we shall find it more and more necessary to continue our growth far beyond what we can learn from others. VVe can learn from the experiments, successes, and failures of the past, but for the unprecedented situations of the future we can rely only upon our own sound judgement. Here at the Academy our adolescence has been molded by our instructors into the sturdy foundation of our adult lives. Our preparation has been sound, for we have been taught to act like men by our teachers and we have been taught to act like men by our associations with them, both in the class room and in other phases of school activity. If we continue to build the structure of our lives according to the founda- tion that they have given us, their trust shall not be betrayed and we shall be worthy of the eff- I ef 1' ' 4 if it will have been carefully planned, and guided by our parents and school we now leave.
